Over Half of Dr. Oz’s Advice Is Unfounded: Study - http://www.msn.com/en-us...
"“One out of three recommendations from The Dr. Oz Show has believable evidence, and about half of the recommendations on The Doctors has believable evidence,” Mike Allan, another Alberta medical professor and co-author of the study, said in a statement. Of the health recommendations that appeared on The Dr. Oz Show, researchers found evidence to support 46 percent, meaning that 46 percent of the time the show gave solid advice. But 15 percent of the time, the advice directly contradicted best available evidence. A whopping 39 percent of the time, the researchers found no evidence to support the advice." - Steve C, Team Marina

Mysterious ice pancakes appear on Scottish river - CNN.com - http://www.cnn.com/2014...
"Ice pancakes. These strange frozen saucers were found during a recent cold snap near the River Dee -- a salmon-filled waterway that passes by the British Queen's summer residence, Balmoral Castle, before heading eastwards to the coastal city of Aberdeen. River Dee Trust biologist Jamie Urquhart made the discovery and took the photos at Lummels Pool, Birse -- several miles downstream of Balmoral. The trust said it was initially unsure what caused the pancakes, but supects they're caused by a rare phenomenon in which foam freezes in a swirling eddy." - Steve C, Team Marina

Congress quietly ends federal government's ban on medical marijuana - LA Times - http://www.latimes.com/nation...

We dont have netflix or anything like that so can't tell if it's a duplicate or replaces that but basically everything on amazon prime (if you have prime) is available straight to your tv including your music and apps and stuff. Without prime you still get it all just fewer movies. - Steve C, Team Marina
I think they threw the "TV" in the middle of the name so people wouldn't relate it to VD. Didn't work. - Kristin
It's not a duplicate. I have Netflix & Hulu, they all offer different things, so having the apps on the Stick are good. My kids like watching on Prime, but their selection is crap for my tastes. It's a good doohickey. Did you pair it with a mobile device? That's pretty cool, but the app for the device is stupid. - Anika

Bariatric surgery in a pill takes a step forward - LA Times - http://www.latimes.com/science...
"It's more of a glimmer of hope on the horizon than it is an actual drug right now. But an Indiana University lab has synthesized and fused a trio of gut hormones into a single agent and shown that obese rodents treated with the resulting molecule experience dramatic weight loss and a reversal of obesity-related ills such as Type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease. Reporting their latest findings this week in the journal Nature Medicine, the authors of the new study described a cascade of synergistic effects in lab animals in response to the three-hormone agent the researchers devised. The researchers likened the results in lab animals to the subtle and far-reaching changes brought about in human patients following bariatric surgery, who not only experience weight loss in response to gastric bypass surgery, but often an abrupt reversal of Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammation and worrisome cholesterol readings." - Steve C, Team Marina
I'll be dead by the time this comes out - "They engineered a single new peptide by integrating three gastrointestinal hormones at the molecular level (glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide, and glucagon receptors). Those act on three key hormone receptors that govern metabolism and digestion, nudging them to work cooperatively to support weight loss, enhance glycemic control and reverse the accumulation of damaging fat in the liver." - Todd Hoff

Deal reached to allow pension plans to cut benefits - http://www.msn.com/en-us...
"A bipartisan group of congressional leaders reached a deal Tuesday evening that would for the first time allow the benefits of current retirees to be severely cut, part of an effort to save some of the nation’s most distressed pension plans. The measure, attached to a massive $1.01 trillion spending bill, would alter 40 years of federal law and could affect millions of workers, many of them part of a shrinking corps of middle-income employees in businesses such as trucking, construction and supermarkets." - Steve C, Team Marina

An end to the battle for the armrest? - CNN.com - http://www.cnn.com/2014...

That's what the makers of Soarigami, a plastic divider that allows air passengers to comfortably share an armrest, are claiming. The device, to go on sale for about $30 in early 2015, balances atop the existing armrest to create an extended leaning platform that prevents the horrors of actual physical contact." - Steve C, Team Marina

Sprint launches deal to cut bills of Verizon, AT&T customers in half - LA Times - http://www.latimes.com/busines...
"Black Friday and Cyber Monday may be over, but Sprint is rolling out one of its biggest price cuts ever. The nation's No. 3 wireless carrier, which has rapidly been losing market share, announced Tuesday that it will cut in half the monthly rate plan for Verizon and AT&T customers who switch to the network. The "Cut Your Bill in Half" event begins Friday. Sprint says it will provide unlimited talk and text to anywhere in the country while on the Sprint network -- regardless of a customer's current plan -- and match his or her data allowance for half the cost they are currently paying." - Steve C, Team Marina

AKA Why I can't stand D1 college football or basketball. - Steve C, Team Marina
Wow. I'm working at a D1 for the first time at the moment (before I'd never even attended one) and while I'm often sickened by the emphasis on sport, I do have to admit that working with these kids has really opened my eyes. They're not all dumb jocks gaming the system. I've met quite a few student athletes who are incredibly bright and many who are only participating in their sport because it pays for an education that would otherwise not be available to them (one even said the sport wasn't fun, it was just a job for her). I've also realized that some of these kids would be 4.0 students if it weren't for the demanding (I'd argue grueling) practice, conditioning, and competition schedules. This kid is obviously not one of them, but some of the MPOW athletes have really made me change my opinion about highly competitive college sports - Soup in a TARDIS
