Sam Smith Will Pay Tom Petty Royalties for "Stay With Me" - http://www.msn.com/en-us...
"Tom Petty has been given a songwriting credit for Sam Smith's hit song "Stay With Me." Petty and collaborator Jeff Lynne were added to the song credits after Petty's team noticed a likeness between Smith's song and Petty's "I Won't Back Down." When the Petty camp reached out to Smith's representatives, they settled the matter amicably and agreed that Petty and Lynne will receive royalties." - Steve C, Team Marina
Two neighbors lost their homes to foreclosure this month. Though the banks say they will work with you these days it's not true in CA. There are too many investors lined up to buy any property they know they have a way to get and even make money on their bad loans right now.
One neighbor had been there 40 years. I'm not sure what refinance they did to still have a mortgage they couldn't pay, he still worked full time. - Steve C, Team Marina
The banks have been caught red-handed turning people out of their homes even when they're *up-to-date* on their mortgages. And the feds seem to be doing NOTHING about it. At the time the US was bailing the financial industry out, I thought I saw the point because of all the jobs that depended on it. But after what they've done, with impunity, and then turning around and having NO sympathy or gratitude to the US public - fuck them. Let them burn. - Spidra Webster
I'm sorry to hear about your neighbors. It's a hard experience. My sister is a paralegal working with commercial real estate. She's told me that FHA and Fannie Mae never supported refinancing of troubled mortgages, despite the government programs. - Greg GuitarBuster

Scientists upload a worm's mind into a Lego robot - CNN.com - http://www.cnn.com/2015...
"A humble roundworm is leading the race in artificial intelligence, showing that it may be possible one day to upload our brains to a computer. Called the Open Worm Project, the research brings together scientists and programmers from around the world with the aim of recreating the behavior of the common roundworm (Caenorhabditis elegans) in a machine. The open source project recently had its first major breakthrough when its software -- modeled on the neurons of the worm's nervous system -- independently controlled a Lego robot. The machine's sensors, without any prior programming, made the robot behave in a similar fashion to C. elegans, approaching and backing away from obstacles or stimulated by food." - Steve C, Team Marina
"With the worm's nose neurons replaced by a sonar sensor and the motor neurons running down both sides of the worm replicated on the left and right motors of the Lego bot, the robot could emulate the worm's biological wiring." - Steve C, Team Marina

Anti-vaccination update: How the measles crisis struck Disneyland - LA Times - http://www.latimes.com/busines...
"This looks like another artifact of the rise of the anti-vaccination movement. The Disneyland cases undermine the anti-vaccination argument that leaving children unimmunized affects only those who haven't received shots. They show how a single unimmunized carrier can spread disease into the larger population, especially individuals who can't be vaccinated because of age. As my colleague Emily Foxhall reported, the Department of Public Health believes that a single unimmunized visitor to Disneyland or the adjacent California Adventure Park in Anaheim from Dec. 15 to Dec. 20 was the source of the latest outbreak. The infection then spread to patients in Pasadena, the counties of Alameda, Orange, Riverside and San Diego, and Utah, affecting children as young as 8 months. Of the victims, one had received the standard two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine. Two San Diego county siblings who were exposed at Disney may have later spread measles to people who were at the Parkway Plaza Mall in El Cajon on Dec. 29, the CDPH says." - Steve C, Team Marina
"As the public health agency observes, measles was judged to be eliminated in the United States in 2000. But recent outbreaks in Europe, Pakistan, Vietnam and the Philippines can be brought to the U.S. by unvaccinated travelers. "Disney and other theme parks in California are international attractions and visitors come from many parts of the world, including those where measles is endemic," the CDPH says. Obviously, Disney isn't at fault in this outbreak--heedless parents leaving their children unvaccinated are. " - Steve C, Team Marina
In a first, the Golden Gate Bridge will close for the weekend - LA Times - http://www.latimes.com/local...
"The bridge will be closed for 52 hours from 12:01 a.m. Saturday to Monday morning while crews install a new, movable median along the bridge. The barriers allow new, huge "zipper trucks" to change the number of northbound and southbound lanes with traffic flow – a safer alternative to having a person hang outside a truck picking up and dropping off orange pylons, which was the old method." - Steve C, Team Marina

Leaked NSA Documents Reveal How To Hide From The NSA - http://www.msn.com/en-us...
"f you want a truly anonymous life, then maybe it's time you learned about Tor, CSpace and ZRTP. These three technologies could help people hide their activities from the National Security Agency, according to NSA documents newly obtained from the archive of former contractor Edward Snowden by the German magazine Der Spiegel. The combination of Tor, CSpace and ZRTP (plus another anonymizing technology for good measure) results in levels of protection that the NSA deems "catastrophic" -- meaning the organization has "near-total loss/lack of insight to target communications," according to Der Spiegel." - Steve C, Team Marina
2 Year Old Boy in shooting 'unzipped' special purse gun pocket - http://www.msn.com/en-us...

Veronica J. Rutledge, 29, was shopping Tuesday morning with her son and three nieces in Hayden, Idaho, when the small-caliber handgun discharged one time, killing her. Terry Rutledge, Veronica's father-in-law, told The Spokesman-Review that the boy unzipped the special gun compartment in the woman's purse where the weapon was kept while she was looking at clothing." - Steve C, Team Marina

New Connection Between Red Meat And Cancer - http://www.msn.com/en-us...
"Scientists have discovered what they believe to be the connection between red meat and cancer, which have long been linked by researchers. A team of scientists from the University of California San Diego (UCSD) discovered this week that red meats including beef, pork and lamb contain a sugar that's created naturally by many other meat-eating animals but not by humans. The sugar identified in the study, dubbed Neu5GC, caused tumors in mice genetically engineered to not produce the compound in a lab study conducted by the researchers. The results help provide a level of groundbreaking understanding about the cancer-causing effects of red meat consumption by humans." - Steve C, Team Marina

US economy grows incredible 5% in third quarter - Dec. 23, 2014 - http://money.cnn.com/2014...
"U.S. economic strength: This is the third and final reading on GDP, and the 5% figure represents an upgrade from the Commerce Department's initial estimate of 3.9% growth. The stellar third quarter also marks an acceleration from the very strong growth of 4.6% during the second quarter and the rough first quarter when GDP was -2.1% due to the harsh winter weather. All of that helps explain why hiring has increased dramatically this year. Employers added 321,000 jobs in November, making 2014 the strongest year for job growth since 1999. The solid growth could clear the path for the Federal Reserve to increase interest rates in 2015. While there is some trepidation about the first interest rate hike in nearly a decade, it would signal that the U.S. economy in actually strong enough to take off the training wheels." - Steve C, Team Marina

Rex Grossman Turns Down Offer from the Browns with Family in Town | Bleacher Report - http://bleacherreport.com/article...
"With injuries to Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer, the quarterback situation is looking bleak in Cleveland. In need of a healthy arm, the Browns actually reached out to free-agent signal-caller Rex Grossman. Surprisingly, the 12-year journeyman turned down the offer with his family in town." "As a veteran with more than 10 years in the NFL, Grossman would have been due — at the minimum — one-seventeenth of $910,000 for his week of work. That's $53,529.41 by our count for less than a full week's work, really six days from today through Sunday." - Steve C, Team Marina

Delta baggage handler accused of smuggling guns - CNN.com - http://www.cnn.com/2014...
"Harvey used his security clearance to help provide guns to a passenger named Mark Quentin Henry after Henry cleared security. - Henry allegedly brought the firearms in his carry-on luggage on at least five flights from Atlanta to New York between May 1 and December 10. - During that time frame, Henry supplied 129 handguns and two assault rifles to co-conspirators in New York, the affidavit states. - One of those co-conspirators ended up selling the firearms to an undercover New York police officer. Henry was arrested in New York on December 10 after landing at JFK airport with 18 handguns in his bag -- seven of which were loaded, the affidavit says." - Steve C, Team Marina
Keurig recalls more than 7 mln brewing machines in North America - http://www.msn.com/en-us...
"Keurig Green Mountain Inc said it would recall about 7.2 million hot beverage-brewing machines that could overheat and cause injury by spraying hot liquids on users. The affected machines are Keurig Mini Plus brewers made between December 2009 and July 2014 with the model number K10 and serial numbers starting with 31, the company said on its website. (bit.ly/1GT8a1G) The recall affects 6.6 million machines in the United States and 564,000 in Canada. Keurig's shares were down 3.3 percent at $135.15 in light premarket trading on Tuesday. The company said the machines could malfunction especially if used to brew more than two cups in quick succession." - Steve C, Team Marina
