AKA Why I can't stand D1 college football or basketball. - Steve C, Team Marina
Wow. I'm working at a D1 for the first time at the moment (before I'd never even attended one) and while I'm often sickened by the emphasis on sport, I do have to admit that working with these kids has really opened my eyes. They're not all dumb jocks gaming the system. I've met quite a few student athletes who are incredibly bright and many who are only participating in their sport because it pays for an education that would otherwise not be available to them (one even said the sport wasn't fun, it was just a job for her). I've also realized that some of these kids would be 4.0 students if it weren't for the demanding (I'd argue grueling) practice, conditioning, and competition schedules. This kid is obviously not one of them, but some of the MPOW athletes have really made me change my opinion about highly competitive college sports - Soup in a TARDIS
I am thankful the stereo receiver I had my eye on for a year was on Amazon deals today. I couldn't be more American.
The Yamaha? I noticed that, but I'm hesitating. - Greg GuitarBuster
Yes Greg that's the one it's not the world beater but has the airplay I needed and juice. Based on reviews online it's good but has limitations in wireless. The receiver it is replacing is from 1989 it works just fine just problems with my unique airport express connection to it and juice. Finally dropped below price point. - Steve C, Team Marina

The deal on the kid toy looked great till i had to open it. Three tennis ball sized stuffed toys that rattle seems simple enough till you lock those baby's down to two sheets of thick cardboard with 10 thick zipties and 8 plastic T connectors. It took two pairs of scissors and a knife to extract the bastards.
HBO to make film of Scientology book, hires 160 lawyers - CNN.com - http://www.cnn.com/2014...
"HBO is backing a documentary based on "Going Clear," a book about Scientology and Hollywood -- and isn't taking any chances with the legal side of things. "We have probably 160 lawyers" looking at the film, HBO Documentary Films President Sheila Nevins told The Hollywood Reporter. (HBO, like CNN, is a unit of Time Warner.) "Going Clear," by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Lawrence Wright ("The Looming Tower"), digs into the life of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard and the influence his church has had on its believers, many of whom have close ties to Hollywood." - Steve C, Team Marina

The man suffered critical injuries, but he was conscious, police said. The car's driver, Mohammad Alcozai, was not injured. He told KGO-TV that he's happy to be alive especially after his car's roof almost completely collapsed in the accident. He said he is praying that the worker survives." - Steve C, Team Marina

So Cal peeps - My sister took a huge leap of faith and moved across the country to be closer to family and start her own dental practice. Anyone with friends in south OC I'd be forever grateful for referrals. - http://www.dianacraftdental.com/san-cle...
Diana is now the proud owner of a new dental practice that is beautiful and modern and fancy and pretty much only operated by her. But as the smartest person I know she can handle it. I’m hoping to help send people her direction. I know it’s far from many of us being in San Clemente but if you know someone in the area or are willing to make the drive for a good dental visit I’d appreciate it. - Steve C, Team Marina

A ‘Stupidity’ Virus Has Been Discovered - http://www.msn.com/en-us...
"A virus known to attack green algae in lakes and rivers can also infect human brains -- and it’s making dummies out of us. The virus, called ATCV-1, can impair cognitive activity, learning and memory, essentially making a person who has the virus less intelligent, researchers in the U.S. have found. Scientists said this is the first time the virus has been observed in people." - Steve C, Team Marina

Laundry detergent pods are 'real risk' to poison kids - CNN.com - http://www.cnn.com/2014...
"Last year a Florida mother of a 7-month-old came back to her room to find that her baby had accidentally eaten one of those bright colored laundry detergent pods. He had been sleeping in a laundry basket with the pod when it happened. They rushed him to the hospital, but it was too late. He died, of poisoning from the detergent, according to the Kissimmee, Florida, police department. He is not the first child to mistake the potent packet for something else. Poison control centers around the country have gotten thousands of calls. In the period of about a year, 17,230 children under the age of 6 have been accidentally poisoned by the packets, according to a new study in the journal Pediatrics. That's about one child every hour between March 2012 and April 2013. Of those cases, 4.4% of the children were hospitalized, and 7.5% experienced a "moderate or major medical outcome."" - Steve C, Team Marina

"Goldieblox introduces a new action figure for girls in an ad that makes a bold statement about "beauty over brains." The new ad titled "GoldieBlox vs. the Big Sister machine" is being compared to Apple's famous "1984" commercial where a woman is seen "breaking the mold." Forest service warns against #bearselfies - CNN.com - http://www.cnn.com/2014...
"Dear park visitors, Please don't take selfies with bears. It's stupid. Love, the U.S Forest Service That pretty much sums up a warning issued recently by wildlife officials at Taylor Creek Visitor Center in South Lake Tahoe, California. "Bears are unpredictable, wild animals and may attack if threatened," Forest Supervisor Nancy Gibson said in a statement. "We can't have visitors creating dangerous situations for themselves and others. People are risking serious injury or death if they get too close to a bear." And if you don't care about your own health, at least consider the bears. If one attacked, officials would have to capture and kill it." - Steve C, Team Marina

Alabama dog gets owner nabbed for alleged drug offenses - CNN.com - http://www.cnn.com/2014...
"A pooch in Alabama got its owner busted for alleged drug offenses -- all with a gleeful wag of its tail. Edward Melvin Henderson was arrested in Prattville, Alabama, and faces a variety of charges. The dog, Bo, was caught up in the incident when police executed a drug search warrant this week at the Prattville home of suspect Edward Melvin Henderson. Henderson took off and dashed toward a wooded area at the back of his home, the Prattville Police Department said in a statement. Bo, a mix of a pit bull and husky, ran after Henderson after investigators told the dog to "go get him." Authorities briefly lost sight of them and were close to giving up. But an excited Bo had found his owner hiding in tall grass, and was wagging his tail. Authorities saw the tail and arrested Henderson." - Steve C, Team Marina

Lysol Buys Top Google Search Result for ‘Ebola,’ Quietly Retreats Following Criticism - http://www.msn.com/en-us...

'Lady Ganga' breaks record before cervical cancer death - CNN.com - http://www.cnn.com/2014...
"He isn't taking the traditional route with this film -- selling it to a TV network or production studio. He didn't want the outside pressure. Instead, he and co-producer Mark Hefti are raising the money on Kickstarter. They plan to donate 100% of the profits from the film to the Michele Baldwin Memorial Fund, which is managed by the American Sexual Health Association. Cervical cancer is a highly preventable cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It's caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV, which has a vaccine. Yet every year more than 270,000 women die worldwide from the disease. Baldwin passed away in February 2012. After her death, Lumiere couldn't bring himself to work on the film. "Any time I tried to start it, I felt incredibly inadequate. Whatever I did, it wasn't good enough for her," he says. His wife finally convinced him to see a therapist, who helped him realize his grieving was normal. As Lumiere spoke early Thursday afternoon, the number of donations on his Kickstarter page continued to climb. In less than 12 hours, his project had raised more than $12,000." - Steve C, Team Marina
FTC sues online dating site for faking profiles - http://www.msn.com/en-us...
"The Federal Trade Commission filed its first lawsuit against an online dating site on Wednesday. It accuses a British company, JDI Dating, with using fake messages and computer-generated profiles to trick people into upgrading to paid memberships. JDI Dating operates 18 dating websites, including cupidswand.com, flirtcrowd.com and findmelove.com. People who created their free profiles would receive messages that appeared to be from members who lived nearby and wanted to meet. According to the FTC's complaint, these messages were almost always bogus. The only way users could respond to that email was to sign-up for a paid membership of $10 to $30 a month." - Steve C, Team Marina
