The fun thing about tonight is that FriendFeed was designed so that you were always surrounded by your friends and their friends, and were oblivious to the greater whole. Facebook's news feed also is just my friends, but doesn't have the same feel. It isn't just the "Trending" box fixed in the right margin that makes you feel less cozy. Other UI elements are also making it feel like it's Facebook talking to you, not just your friends talking to you. The "Write a comment..." box at the bottom of each post feels more like a command than an option. The unread counts along the left and the top make it less casual and more task-oriented. At FriendFeed you're just hanging out.
