Wow, a firmware update to my WRT610N router made multi-peer downloads (such as Steam updates, WoW updates, etc) about 10x faster. I always assumed it was Comcast throttling and had meant to complain. 600KB/s -> 6MB/s
The firmware update had been available for 2 years. The release notes say "Fixed Slow Internet speed issue." It didn't seem to affect single-source downloads. I feel dumb. - Tudor Bosman
I noticed that my VPN connection was getting slow during a Steam game update, and pings to the router would take 400ms on the same local network. (pings to other machines on the home network were <1ms). I was ready to ditch the router until I thought to check for a firmware update. - Tudor Bosman

The Last Psychiatrist: The Harvard Cheating Scandal Is Stupid - http://thelastpsychiatrist.com/2012...
"everyone in that class cheated: if they didn't copy off of each other, they copied off of the professor, with no internalization of the "knowledge" because that was never the point of the class. If you want to try and tell me how those are any different, I'll be at the bar. So let me make my own counter-allegation: the students aren't guilty of cheating, the university is guilty of entrapment. Here's what you're not allowed to do: ask a basic question, "Do interest groups make Congress more or less representative as an institution?" and then threaten that "the response will be judged on how well it draws from the course materials to make an argument." NO. You could evaluate the answer on its merits or the rigor of the thinking, but whether and how it draws on the course materials is exactly what you do not want" - Tudor Bosman

The Pope drops Catholic ban on condoms in historic shift - Telegraph - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news...
"After decades of fierce opposition to the use of all contraception, the Pontiff has ended the Church’s absolute ban on the use of condoms. He said it was acceptable to use a prophylactic when the sole intention was to “reduce the risk of infection” from Aids. While he restated the Catholic Church’s staunch objections to contraception because it believes that it interferes with the creation of life, he argued that using a condom to preserve life and avoid death could be a responsible act – even outside marriage." - Tudor Bosman

It's 2012 and X servers still haven't solved the Alt / Meta debacle. Somewhere between the NX client on Windows, its X server (a version of Cygwin) (or, on the Mac, OpenNX / XQuartz), the NeatX server on Linux, and KDE / Gnome, things get messed up and keyboard shortcuts don't work. New rule: Alt and Meta are the same. Always.
Hmm. This is a bad rule when you actually have both an Alt and a Meta (Windows or Command) key, though. - Victor Ganata

Altamont Free Concert - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
"The Altamont Speedway Free Festival was an infamous rock concert held on Saturday, December 6, 1969, at the Altamont Speedway in northern California, between Tracy and Livermore. Headlined and organized by The Rolling Stones, it also featured, in order of appearance: Santana, The Flying Burrito Brothers, The Jefferson Airplane, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, with the Rolling Stones taking the stage as the final act. The Grateful Dead were also scheduled to perform, but declined to play shortly before their scheduled appearance due to the increasing violence at the venue. “That's the way things went at Altamont—so badly that the Grateful Dead, prime organizers and movers of the festival, didn't even get to play,” someone was quoted in Rolling Stone." - Tudor Bosman
