Anyone have an opinion on smoked meats and time in the fridge? I would think smoked meats would last a little longer. Smoking does equal preservation, am I right?
I'd assume it depends on whether smoking was done for just cooking purposes or curing. Smoked salmon definitely lasts longer than regularly cooked in the fridge, smoked chicken seems to last as long as other cooked chicken, anecdotally. - Jennifer Dittrich
Just cooking. I had some ribs, they were 10 days old. I reheated to a 190 or so and they tasted fine, but then I got freaked out when I remembered how long they had been sitting there. - Eric - Final Countdown

Jimmy Fallon's Paula Deen Network Joke - http://www.thebraiser.com/watch-j...
"Here’s a short crack that Jimmy Fallon took at Deen on last night’s Tonight Show momologue; admittedly, all of the “shows” about to air on the new Paula Deen Network don’t sound terribly off from the real thing." - Eric - Final Countdown
Watch a Preview of Roy Choi's Upcoming CNN Show, Street Food - http://www.eater.com/2014...
"The show, produced by CNN Digital Studios, will be distributed exclusively online in a Netflix-style model, with all eight episodes available to stream starting October 13. In the preview, Choi says the show will explore how "the flavors, sounds, styles" and people of Los Angeles fuel the city's food scene and overall culture: Choi interviews a diverse line-up of guests like chef/fellow CNN host Anthony Bourdain, YouTube star Michelle Phan, and filmmaker Jon Favreau." - Eric - Final Countdown
Paula Deen on the Today Show - http://www.thebraiser.com/paula-d...
"In anticipation of her brand-new (but not really) new online network launch, Paula Deen stopped by the Today show for a chat. If you can recall just a year ago, when the world was shocked by allegations of some nasty racist comments, her first chat with Matt Lauer was … not quite as sincere as she might as hoped (and perhaps the worst grammar that we’ve ever heard in our life). This time around, Deen and her sons had the talking points down — well, if you can get past some of the weirdness. Naturally, the actual launch of the Paula Deen Network was barely discussed. Lauer did mention the news that Deen and the network had bought back all of her Food Network video footage and shows, while Jamie and Bobby Deen answered that they paid “more than $20″ for all of it. (Hardy har har.) But really, this was the Paula Deen apology tour. A couple of the major bombs dropped in the segment: first, Deen admitted that her last appearance on the Today show maybe wasn’t her best idea. After Lauer called out her discomfort levels at watching the old footage and re-run of history, Deen said she couldn’t watch it — and that she should have been “in the care of a doctor.”" - Eric - Final Countdown
All of a sudden MTV2 went from Boy Meets World to Pranked. This show is making me weep for humanity. I really really really want someone to change the channel. I just can't do it.
Paul Ryan Declares War Against Math - http://nymag.com/daily...
"Obama enacted policies to increase revenue and slow health-care inflation, over the staunch and often hysterical opposition of Ryan, who insisted that budget forecasts showing that Obama’s proposals would reduce the deficit were wrong. The deficit has in fact fallen very fast. Ryan’s response is to deny that any of this has happened, to castigate Obama for failing to reduce the deficit, and to propose new measures that would increase it. And he wants everybody to ignore the budget forecasters because their numbers won’t bear out his claims." - Eric - Final Countdown

What you don't want to hear, "Mom I can't breathe". What you don't want to do, book it to the ER. What you don't want from the doc, "it's not getting better, we'll need to check you in." What you don't want the ER to say, "you'll have to take an ambulance to the other side of town and check into the PICU." Where we don't want to be. Here.

Crossroads GPS is airing an anti Mark Udall ad for his stance on birth control. The funny thing is, the actress sitting in her kitchen talking about being insulted has a distinct SoCal accent. Nice try Koch brothers.
Of course the school portal is down. Just when I get a second to post some grades.
Any Sammy Haggar fans? What are the top 3 songs I should listen to? I'm going to his Birthday Bash concert in Vegas. It's free so I ain't saying no, but I'm not really familiar with his work beyond a couple radio songs.

Cambridge Audio Stream Magic 6 V2 Preview - http://www.audioholics.com/gadget-...
"Some people aren't going to be happy to let any old device stream content to their system. They aren't going to buy some hockey puck from Apple or Roku (much less something that looks like a USB stick). It could be that that they want something that does more, or it could be that they just don't trust those mass-market devices to have the audio quality that they demand. Regardless, they want something more." - Eric - Final Countdown
Review: Atlas Shrugged, Part III plays like a cheap knock-off of itself - http://www.avclub.com/review...
"Rand’s inextricably atheist, fetishistic brand of libertarianism is popular with a certain subset of the socially conservative, religious American right—which seems paradoxical if one doesn’t take into account the fact that Atlas Shrugged shares most of its beats with Rapture fiction. Here, the true believers, self-interested geniuses and industrialists, disappear one by one, whisked away to an anarcho-capitalist heaven called Galt’s Gulch, while the rabble collapse into the bad kind of anarchy—the kind brought on by unions, governments, and nationalized railroads. Revelations come from the mouth of Christ figure John Galt (who actually gets crucified by government thugs in this movie), the brilliant son of a common car mechanic." - Eric - Final Countdown
Here's how two hip hop experts explained how rap works to Antonin Scalia - http://www.vox.com/xpress...
"Explaining how hip hop works to nine people aged 54 to 81 isn't exactly an enviable assignment" - Eric - Final Countdown
"The case centers around lyrics alluding to Eminem's song "I'm Back"; Nielsen and Kubrin's brief cites "Fuck tha Police," which Dre produced." - Eric - Final Countdown
Seahawks fans. You are about as bad as your team of big mouths. Your announcer comes on our radio talking smack in my city. You've got punchlines. Ha ha. You guys are like the kid at the lunch table who has friends only when you buy everyone ice cream. We'll see on Sunday. We'll see.

BBC team under attack in southern Russia - http://www.bbc.com/news...
"They had gone to investigate reports of Russian servicemen being killed near the border with Ukraine. The team's cameraman was beaten up and the camera smashed during the attack. The recorded material left in the car had been deleted, the team found after returning from the police station. The BBC has lodged a formal protest with Russia over the incident and called for an investigation." - Eric - Final Countdown

Andrew Zimmern on Celebrity Chefs, Egotarian Cuisine - http://www.thebraiser.com/andrew-...
"At no time in the history of the world, in this culture has one group of people — Americans — so fetishized and worshipped food. And not only have we put certain food on a pedestal, and certain chefs on a pedestal, and certain food talents on a pedestal, we’ve done it to such a degree with so many people that don’t deserve that phrase by any measure, that it’s a little uncomfortable for folks. Look: just because someone can forage some wild moss somewhere — and I’m not taking a shot at [Rene] Redzepi or any of those guys … Just because you can put some sort of like crazy goofy sea snail on your menu doesn’t mean it’s good, or should be cooked or or that you’re doing it the right way." - Eric - Final Countdown
The funny part for me is that (at least the quote) sounds a lot like older restaurant critique, but addressing the much larger stage that the culinary culture has now. The problem of the overpriced 'fancy' restaurant isn't new, but it now has a whole bunch of other things attached to it (like blogs, podcasts, television shows) that very few could aspire to before. - Jennifer Dittrich
The headline on CNN: Obama Sending 3000 Troops to Fight Ebola. Does that headline make it look like troops will actually be shooting at the Ebola? That's what I first thought.
War Against Ebola Declared! - Stephen Mack
Ferguson tragedy becoming a farce - http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinion...
"The latest evidence that the fix is in came this week from The Post’s Kimberly Kindy and Carol Leonnig, who discovered that McCulloch’s office has declined so far to recommend any charges to the grand jury. Instead, McCulloch’s prosecutors handling the case are taking the highly unusual course of dumping all evidence on the jurors and leaving them to make sense of it. McCulloch’s office claims that this is a way to give more authority to the grand jurors, but it looks more like a way to avoid charging Wilson at all — and to use the grand jury as cover for the outrage that will ensue. It is often said that a grand jury will indict a ham sandwich if a prosecutor asks it to. But the opposite is also true. A grand jury is less likely to deliver an indictment — even a much deserved one — if a prosecutor doesn’t ask for it." - Eric - Final Countdown
Transgender girl crowned homecoming princess - http://www.denverpost.com/englewo...
"Scarlett Lenh received the majority of the votes from her junior class at Sand Creek High School, besting three biological girls for the honor. Lenh, biologically a boy, was born Andy Lenh. She was bestowed the honor during Friday night's football game. The 16-year-old began identifying as a transgender girl this school year and began using the girls' bathroom. She said she's known she was a girl since about age 7 or 8. "It was really exciting. It felt really good. I couldn't stop smiling," Scarlett said after she found out at an afternoon assembly that the majority of the junior class had voted for her. Two of the other girls who were nominated by their peers were "extremely supportive," Scarlett said, and the other "was really upset."" - Eric - Final Countdown
Dropping the needle: the life and death of Turntable.fm - http://www.theverge.com/2013...
"Tonight at 10PM EST, the virtual DJs at Turntable.fm will be escorted off the stage for the last time. Two and a half years after founders Billy Chasen and Seth Goldstein captivated music fans with their highly interactive approach to internet radio, they are shutting the service down to conserve their remaining venture capital and focus on a spinoff. Fans have used Turntable to create 1 million virtual DJ rooms and play more than 400 million songs — but it hasn’t made for much of a business. "The cost of running a music service has been too expensive," the founders wrote on their blog, "and we can’t outpace it with our efforts to monetize it and cut costs."" - Eric @ CS Techcast
