self-verified is just as good.
I've been reading Pratchett since The Light Fantastic (went back to The Colour of Magic later) and of course Good Omens. Always enjoyable, but Thief of Time is my favorite; it just hits everything for me.
I picked up The Fifth Elephant just for the title while in Jamaica. When we got back, I found another title (I think it was Wyrd Sisters), then I realized it was series. I think Soul Music & Small Gods are my faves. - Anika

How to Make Sichuan-Style Wontons in Chili Oil | Serious Eats - http://www.seriouseats.com/2015...
"Like many Asian dishes, suanla choushou is as much about textural contrast as it is about flavor. The skins should be slippery and tender, with a flavor that is almost bland compared with the sweet, mild pork filling (sweet but not cloying, as some versions tend to be). In turn, the wontons as a whole are also bland when compared with the sauce. It's the sauce that brings on the contrasts with its almost overly intense flavor, thanks to sweet Chinkiang vinegar, soy sauce, and plenty of chili oil with crunchy bits of fried dried chilies. It's the same sauce you'll find on a number of cold appetizers in the Sichuan repertoire and one that's worth learning how to make." - Andrew C (see frenf.it)
The cheapest flight from SF to NY this July that'll fit my schedule is on United. I should be able to do it without checked luggage, but still, should I? It's $480; Virgin America is $635.

Performing Shakespeare on a Cruise Ship - http://the-toast.net/2015...
"I have always preferred theatre; I never wanted to be a movie star (though don’t get me wrong: if Spielberg rings, I’m not going to be precious about it). But it was never my dream to perform for cruise passengers on a ship in the middle of the Atlantic. When I took the job, I felt as if I’d been exiled from London theatre before I’d really got going. Even now, casting directors glance at my CV and say, “Oh, you worked on a…cruise.”" - Andrew C (✔)

"but I didn’t take her voice for myself. I didn’t need it. I’ve got a perfectly fine voice, thank you, trained by whale divas, and it’s mine. [...] No, I took her voice for two simple reasons—she was a twit and she was in love. I took one look at her and knew that she’d spill everything she knew in the pretty human boy’s ear, and then where would we be?" - Andrew C (✔)
" (But Ursula, you say, she could just have written it all down! Taking her voice wouldn’t stop that! To which I say—did you ever meet her? It took her three tries to write her own name. Our contract was a verbal agreement because otherwise she’d still be reading it and the prince would be dead of old age.)" - Andrew C (✔)
Children's Stories Made Horrific: The Little Mermaid - http://the-toast.net/2015...
"“You are dear to me,” said the prince; “for you have the best heart, and you are the most devoted to me; you are like a young maiden whom I once saw, but whom I shall never meet again. […]" And the mermaid knew she had loved him best when his lips did not move to speak, and when his eyes did not open to sea, and when he did not move to take possession. She loved him best when he was drowned." - Andrew C (✔)

Cheap laser cutters were $3000 in 2008. I then proceeded to entirely forget about them until now, and it looks like the low end is $800 now.
Andrew, what kind of laser cutter are you talking about? What do you want to use it for? - Greg GuitarBuster
I saw them at Maker Faire in the Bay Area in 2008 and really liked what they could do. I didn't have $3000 (which was bare-bones and required some moderate software hacking on the PC side, I think) at the time. More importantly, I didn't have solid plans beyond thinking that lasered jeans and lasered sneakers were cool. (Those have burned in designs rather than cut all the way through. Also, shoes are an additional problem due to their non-flatness, necessitating deeper cabinets and causing focus problems. Sneaker manufacturers deal with both by lasering the flat leather before forming the shoe.) - Andrew C (✔)
Senate Historian Can't Find Anything In History That Matches GOP Iran Sabotage Letter - http://www.politicususa.com/2015...

Treason? - Todd Hoff
The next paragraph says probably not: "As Rmuse pointed out, the letter most likely was not a crime, because it was a public letter, and not an official negotiation with a foreign country. The letter was an act of political sabotage by a group of senators who may not have legally committed treason, but who were acting with the intent of treasonously undermining the Commander In Chief." - Andrew C (see frenf.it)
The president is in charge of foreign relations. Trying usurp that role sounds like treason to me. Of is a public letter different than a negotiation? It's saying hey, here's a private channel to exploit. - Todd Hoff

Children’s Stories Made Horrific: The Beauty And The Beast - http://the-toast.net/2015...
"The merchant was loath to part with any of his daughters to this monster, but he loved his own life, and fathers have given their daughters to monsters before. His decision caused him great grief, but never so great that he would have amended it. He took his horse from the stable and left the palace with a heavy heart and a heavier step." - Andrew C (✔)
"As soon as he was gone, Beauty sat down in the great hall, and fell a crying likewise; but as she was mistress of a great deal of resolution, she recommended herself to God, and resolved not to be uneasy the little time she had to live; for she firmly believed Beast would eat her up that night. Not all Beasts eat you up in a single night. Some Beasts devour by pieces, and still others make you consume yourself." - Andrew C (✔)

What I've Learned from Two Years Collecting Data on Police Killings - http://gawker.com/what-iv...
"The biggest thing I've taken away from this project is something I'll never be able to prove, but I'm convinced to my core: The lack of such a database is intentional. No government--not the federal government, and not the thousands of municipalities that give their police forces license to use deadly force--wants you to know how many people it kills and why." - Andrew C (see frenf.it)
"It's the only conclusion that can be drawn from the evidence. What evidence? In attempting to collect this information, I was lied to and delayed by the FBI, even when I was only trying to find out the addresses of police departments to make public records requests. The government collects millions of bits of data annually about law enforcement in its Uniform Crime Report, but it doesn't collect information about the most consequential act a law enforcer can do." - Andrew C (see frenf.it)
"I've been lied to and delayed by state, county and local law enforcement agencies--almost every time. They've blatantly broken public records laws, and then thumbed their authoritarian noses at the temerity of a citizen asking for information that might embarrass the agency. And these are the people in charge of enforcing the law." - Andrew C (see frenf.it)
Aw yeah. Last night I marinated diced chicken thighs with fish sauce, minced ginger, garlic, shallots, and frozen chopped lemongrass, and black pepper, and sautéed it tonight. Turned out great.

Maaaaaaan. First the blind date texts me that she's wearing a black jacket, grey pants, and brown hair (way to stand out), then she goes into the bar (bad reception) and when I can't find her (she's not looking around at all for me), she apparently decides I'm a no-show in under 15 minutes.
And when I do finally ask this person -- who honestly seems like part of the unrelated industry meet up -- if it's her, 15 minutes later, she tells me she just made other plans. - Andrew C (✔)

Read the Iranian foreign minister's super passive-aggressive response to Tom Cotton - Vox - http://www.vox.com/2015...
"Zarif expressed astonishment that some members of US Congress find it appropriate to write to leaders of another country against their own President and administration. He pointed out that from reading the open letter, it seems that the authors not only do not understand international law, but are not fully cognizant of the nuances of their own Constitution when it comes to presidential powers in the conduct of foreign policy." - Andrew C (see frenf.it)
"Foreign Minister Zarif added that "I should bring one important point to the attention of the authors and that is, the world is not the United States, and the conduct of inter-state relations is governed by international law, and not by US domestic law. The authors may not fully understand that in international law, governments represent the entirety of their respective states, are responsible for the conduct of foreign affairs, are required to fulfil the obligations they undertake with other states and may not invoke their internal law as justification for failure to perform their international obligations." - Andrew C (see frenf.it)
"The Iranian Foreign Minister added that "change of administration does not in any way relieve the next administration from international obligations undertaken by its predecessor in a possible agreement about Irans peaceful nuclear program." He continued "I wish to enlighten the authors that if the next administration revokes any agreement with the stroke of a pen, as they boast, it will have simply committed a blatant violation of international law."" - Andrew C (see frenf.it)
"Zarif expressed the hope that his comments "may enrich the knowledge of the authors to recognize that according to international law, Congress may not modify the terms of the agreement at any time as they claim, and if Congress adopts any measure to impede its implementation, it will have committed a material breach of US obligations." - Andrew C (see frenf.it)
