The cheapest flight from SF to NY this July that'll fit my schedule is on United. I should be able to do it without checked luggage, but still, should I? It's $480; Virgin America is $635.

I'd suggest waiting for a sale or setting up an alert on Kayak.

The last I read, 45 days out is generally the sweet spot for the lowest airline prices.
