Cheap laser cutters were $3000 in 2008. I then proceeded to entirely forget about them until now, and it looks like the low end is $800 now.

I saw them at Maker Faire in the Bay Area in 2008 and really liked what they could do. I didn't have $3000 (which was bare-bones and required some moderate software hacking on the PC side, I think) at the time. More importantly, I didn't have solid plans beyond thinking that lasered jeans and lasered sneakers were cool. (Those have burned in designs rather than cut all the way through. Also, shoes are an additional problem due to their non-flatness, necessitating deeper cabinets and causing focus problems. Sneaker manufacturers deal with both by lasering the flat leather before forming the shoe.)
