"Inside the housing, there are five cameras equipped with Nikon DX AF Fisheye-Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8G ED lenses. The view of the cameras is reflected sideways by 90 degrees using five mirrors mounted on the backside of the front cover. The images from all five cameras are then stitched together into a ring shaped view of the surrounding and is captured as a video stream. Additionally, a 3D-wireframe model is generated in real-time and recorded alongside with the video (it records the closest distance to a object from the apparatus). The system is used to check the clearance of the track in an automated way – it can detect and document even the smallest deformation in tunnel walls, while driving at full speed."

I didn't notice this when I took the photo but that isn't 1 guard walking. It's 2 in nearly perfect unison. Click on the original size to see their swords off by just a few inches.
- Benjamin Golub
What's the point of the guys with the swords? Are they just for show? Clearly the *real* guard is the guy with the machine gun!
- Gabe
I think the whole thing is just for show :)

If you are just using it for off network debugging, you can usually get better deals from http://www.lowendbox.com/. I ended up getting one from ramhost.us - I pay like $4 a month, and I don't have to worry about bringing it up when I need it (edit: no affiliation with either company)
- Nick Lothian
That is a good deal. But I think this is better for something I need infrequently. Let's assume I use it for one afternoon a week (that's probably high): $1.5 + $0.02*4*4 = $1.82. Most of my cost is actually for the storage. If I could figure out how to reduce the root EBS from 15G to something more reasonable like 5G I could get it to < $1!

To help me remember to shut it down I made a simple cron job to email me if it's been up for 4 hours.
- Benjamin Golub
True, but to me having it up all the time is worth $2.50 a month

Loki has been hunting a house fly for the last hour. I just heard a crash, saw Loki leaping through the air, and found the fly alive but stunned on the carpet.
Very impressive Nikon. The D7000 is everything we loved about the D90 but with a magnesium body, larger ISO range (in both directions), and most importantly to me a better AF system. Whatever Nikon comes up with to replace the D300s and eventually the D700 will need to be equally impressive to keep pros and prosumers from just saving some money and using a D7000.

"You can also stream from your computer, if you miss those old hard drive-sourced days of yore, but iOS 4.2's AirPlay also enables streaming from an iPad straight to an Apple TV for something much more surreal." from http://www.engadget.com/2010...

"So, why share this? * Because we’re an open company by nature. * Because hopefully for the people and companies to whom this happens, it’s a bit of a public, “That really sucks, but I wanted to let you know that you’re not alone…” * Because for companies going into such a process, I hope this can shed some light and some lessons learned."

Now we just need a Chrome extension to let me just click on a phone number to dial. Ideally it would also OCR images for those annoying websites that put phone numbers in a banner.
- Benjamin Golub
That extension is a bit different. It make Google call you and connect you to the number – it is recorded as an incoming call and feels so backwards. I just want something to pop up a window with the dialer pre-filled. Also that extension makes websites that rely on the order of CSS break: http://code.google.com/p.... It'll be fixed in 6.0 apparently.

Not working yet for me. I wonder if Google pushes decrements to the unread counter? E.g.: I get an email, my phone receives a push notification, the Google app counter is set to 1, and I read the email in Safari (or wherever). Will they push another notification to set the counter back to 0. If not the small bit of OCD in me will trigger and I'll go back to the Mail app.
- Benjamin Golub
Awesome, they do decrement the counter as the read state changes

Very good news - and excitement is only fun when it's in someone else's back yard. In our back yard I like boring geeky issues like full hard drives.
