Could The Pacific Northwest Be Next? | New York Times - http://www.nytimes.com/gwire...
"The Cascadia Subduction Zone ... is the only offshore earthquake zone [on the West Coast] capable of producing megathrust events, i.e., very large 'top 10' type earthquakes,’ said Synolakis, adding that Seattle is in far more danger than any spot south of the California-Oregon line for that kind of quake plus tsunami.” - Anthony Citrano
"... "The impact to Seattle could be devastating," he said...." - WoH: Professor MOTHRA
And there was an article on the SJ Mercury news site yesterday saying that a significant event on the Alaska-Aleutian fault could produce a tsunami that can potentially take out the Port of Oakland AND much of Alameda (where I live). - vicster.
The megaquake connection: Are huge earthquakes linked? | New Scientist - http://www.newscientist.com/article...
"If you have a quake of, let's say, 6.2 or larger, every sand grain on the planet is moving to the music of that event." - Anthony Citrano

"The USGS has updated the magnitude of the March 11, 2011, Tohoku earthquake in northern Honshu, Japan, to 9.0 from the previous estimate of 8.9. Independently, Japanese seismologists have also updated their estimate of the earthquake’s magnitude to 9.0. This magnitude places the earthquake as the fourth largest in the world since 1900 and the largest in Japan since modern instrumental recordings began 130 years ago." - Anthony Citrano

Faint young Sun paradox | Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
“Theoretical models of the Sun's development suggest that 3.8 to 2.5 billion years ago, during the Archean period, the Sun was only about 70% as bright as it is today. Such a weak star would not have been able to sustain liquid water on the Earth's surface, and thus life should not have been able to develop. However, the geological record demonstrates that the Earth has remained at a fairly constant temperature throughout its history, and that the young Earth was somewhat warmer than it is today.” - Anthony Citrano

"Praying for Japan" presumably means praying to the same God who unleashed this horror upon them, correct? #prayforjapan
No. - Akiva
Some prologue: as some of you know, I had a family tragedy strike very close to home this week. I asked no one to pray. Several people did suggest the affected seek comfort in Jesus/God. I find it offensive. To me, it too obviously raises the question of where the fuck this awesome Jesus/God was five minutes before it happened. And most rational people know the answer: nowhere. I announced that tragedy with sentiments similar to what Jeff and Sean have expressed here: fate is indifferent; be grateful. - Anthony Citrano

Best Mars Images From Orbiter’s First 5 Years | Wired Science - http://www.wired.com/wiredsc...
“NASA's prolific Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter turns five Earth years old today. Since settling into orbit around the red planet on March 10, 2006, MRO has transmitted more data to Earth -- 131 trillion bits and more than 70,000 images so far -- than all other interplanetary missions combined.” - Anthony Citrano
Dark Pools: The Menace Of Rising Opacity In Financial Markets | Forbes - http://blogs.forbes.com/davos...
“This column by Venkatachalam Shunmugam, Chief Economist, Multi Commodity Exchange of India, and first published on VoxE.org argues that the rising opacity and barriers to entry in these markets have been sorely overlooked leading to dark pools, flash trading, and front-running. These unfair practices can–at any time–cripple markets. They undermine the premise of free markets and should be stopped.” - Anthony Citrano
Mapping the 'Diabetes Belt' | Discovery News - http://news.discovery.com/human...
“A swath of the Deep South and Appalachia has emerged as the U.S. ‘diabetes belt,’ researchers find. County-by-county mapping shows that the highest rates of diabetes cut two paths -- one strung through Tennessee, Kentucky and West Virginia, and another running eastward from Louisiana through Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina.” - Anthony Citrano
1 Million Workers. 90 Million iPhones. 17 Suicides. Who’s to Blame? | Wired Magazine - http://www.wired.com/magazin...
"To be soaked in materialism, to directly and indirectly champion it, has also brought guilt. I don’t know if I have a right to the vast quantities of materials and energy I consume in my daily life. Even if I thought I did, I know the planet cannot bear my lifestyle multiplied by 7 billion individuals. I believe this understanding is shared, if only subconsciously, by almost everyone in the Western world." - Anthony Citrano
“..in fact, the suicide rate at Foxconn remains below national averages for both rural and urban China, a bleak but unassailable fact that does much to exonerate the conditions at Foxconn and absolutely nothing to bring those 17 people back. But the work itself isn’t inhumane—unless you consider a repetitive, exhausting, and alienating workplace over which you have no influence or authority to be inhumane. And that would pretty much describe every single manufacturing or burger-flipping job ever.” - Anthony Citrano
