I need a shopping cart. Grocery stores are within a mile of my new apartment but will be on foot.

Hardware stores often have 'em tucked away somewhere. Get a bigger one than you think you need.

also, new apartment?! COOL!
- RepoRat
haha, yeah I like to eat. :)

Get one that has a squeaky wheel so that you make that adorable old lady grocery cart sound as you stroll to and from the store. :D <3

Well, you know. I managed with a grocery cart for years, first in Madison and then in Fairfax. You don't realize how much space stuff takes up until there's limited space to haul it!
- RepoRat
I so wish I would've had one of those living there. It is when I got in the habit of never using a shopping cart in the store; shopping with just a basket meant I could haul all of the stuff home on foot or by bus.

I shelled out for a Betabrand "Farmer's Market" bag a couple of years ago for hauling groceries on bike. It's not a cart, but if you decide to go with an urban trekker look, it'll do that beautifully.

grocery bags are .05 each tax in dc and mo co ... so this basket would also be nice if you forgot your reusable bags.

I got a basic one at Ralph's.

*checks previous posts* A new apartment, eh? Sounds like you're settling on in. :) And how cute will you be with your basket and reusable bags? :D :D :D

haha, thanks. I've quite the collection already but being out in MoCo has taught me well on the bag front. *struts*

Now I have to listen to that! (I think I've told y'all it became "Insane in the Blender" during an epic Halloween party.)

Yeah, as someone who has been car-free for 2+ years, reusable bags don't serve the same function as a cart.
- Rachel Walden
Get a big one, enamel coated so it won't end up rusting if you push it through puddles and they splash up on the bottom of your cart. Also, get one with the small basket on the back if you can...handy for protecting things like eggs and bread. You might also want to fit the bottom with some sort of "laminated" heavy-duty cardboard, to keep bags from trying to slip through the holes in the bottom (I can tell you what you need and how to do it if you need me to...free/cheap materials that will last for years and be reused in many carts) This is the one I have, but I didn't pay nearly as much for it: http://www.walmart.com/ip...

I had that one too, minus the basket on the back (which I can totally see the use of). Survived four-season use in the Frozen North.

We used my flat-mate's wheeled suitcase in London. Happy shopping!

Thanks for the good advice. Will do.

I see what you mean about Amazon, what a difference in price between the two! We buy our carts locally, pre-assembled, for about $25...$20 if they don't have the extra basket. I don't really like the liners, though. I had one for my first cart years ago, but ended up throwing it away. It makes it too much of a fuss to close the cart and latch it shut (can't do it with the liner in it). That's why I opted to make the board to go in the bottom. Been using the same board for at least 20 years. Don't know how many carts it has been through. Yup, RepoRat, I have dragged mine through the snow, too. I think the cart survived better than me. Not on my list of the most fun things to do, but you do what you have to, if you want to eat.

haha, I finally put together my shopping cart tonight, because why not?

I also accept that I am slowly turning into Sophia Petrillo from The Golden Girls.

Here in the UK people take the store ones home with them and dump them in the nearest canal or river, or take them back next time they visit the store.

Can confirm: I have eaten with Derrick
