Stephen Mack

I'm a resident of Silicon Valley, father of two young children, an employee of TiVo (over 16 years now), and I care about things.
A month became weeks became days, and now it's hours. This has been both the best FF month ever (as Mo prompted on the day of the announcement) but also the hardest. Love you all.
I shared my daughter's birth here. And the end of my marriage. And a few thousand other moments and thoughts, big and small. - Stephen Mack

Sea caves, waterfalls, and Spinner Dolphins off the Napali coast, Kauai, Hawaii
We had to get up at 5:30am but it was totally worth it. Exploring sea caves, landing on Napali to hike to a hieau, snorkeling, and then an exciting ride back. Great 6.5 hour trip. - Stephen Mack
Beautiful! - AHnix (Anna Haro)

I'll miss the #saturdayff tradition most of all. Thanks for starting it, Louis. - Stephen Mack
Bump for Laura! - Stephen Mack
Today would have been my tenth wedding anniversary. Well, since I'm still married, it still is. (I've been separated since 2011.) One of the first vacations I went on with her was to Kauai. Today I'm going back there with just my kids. FriendFeed will shut down while I'm gone. Life is cycles. Love you all.
((hugs)) see you around, Stephen! - WoH: Professor MOTHRA
Take care and safe travels! - Galadriel C.

This is the first cake I've ever made.
Also, happy birthday to my brother-in-law Robert. - Stephen Mack
Nice! - Anne Bouey
Congrats. That's one cake more than I have ever made. - Stephan Planken
I have either made one or zero cakes in my life, depending on the bar set for "cake." (I attempted to make an apple cake as a school project in elementary school, but I forgot the apples and probably a few other things, because the result was an apple-less cracker.) - Eivind
#saturdayff I was in Journalism in high school, and it was pretty much wild west. This was 1985, my senior year, and we'd type up the stories in some crazy word processor on Apple IIs, save them to floppy and print them out on our dot matrix printers to edit them, then use the floppies on an Apple III to send the stories to a typesetter that
was the size of a small room. - Stephen Mack
I like these posts about the early days of computing. I was four years old when you were doing this. - Richard A.

The CEO of Lufthansa, pictured here in a press conference regarding the awful air disaster of Germanwings Flight 9525 in the Swiss Alps, is Carsten Spohr. I went to high school with him. He was an exchange student from Germany who graduated with me from Saratoga in 1985. - http://www.ibtimes.com/lufthan...
This is just a small and coincidental personal connection I have to one part of this horrible event. I wasn't friends with Carsten, but I had several classes with him and remember him well. I had no idea he'd become CEO of a major company. - Stephen Mack
Hello Europe. How's your day so far?

Ad of the Day: Taco Bell Launches Cold War Against McDonald's With Propaganda Imagery [Adweek] - http://www.adweek.com/news...
From the article: "Egg McMuffins aren't just mediocre pastries stuffed with microwaved eggs, bright yellow cheese and ham product. They are a form of tyranny. That, at least, is the upshot of 'Routine Republic,' a riveting and surreal new Taco Bell campaign from Deutsch. A year after the agency cheekily hired a bunch of guys named Ronald McDonald to celebrate the Mexican-themed fast-food chain's first foray into breakfast, the shots at the Golden Arches are barely masked. In the three-minute centerpiece ad below, McDonald's affable but intrinsically creepy mascot is reimagined as a sunken-eyed Stalinist clown (though perhaps bearing closer resemblance to Mao). He rules over a small army of look-alikes and an oppressed proletariat in a decrepit, cloistered city with a beefy security apparatus. Run-of-the-mill breakfast sandwiches are his preferred method of subjugation." - Stephen Mack
I would probably enjoy seeing "The Book of Mormon" but it freaks me out that tickets range from $184 to $892 (!) each. - http://www.san-francisco-theater.com/theater...
That just seems too much to pay for a show. - Stephen Mack
At least the Book of Mormon will start on time. Madonna.. doesn't start till 4 hours later then it states. - CW
18 Quirky Portraits From The National Beard And Mustache Championships [Buzzfeed] - http://www.buzzfeed.com/tob...
Photographs by Greg Anderson. From September 2013. - Stephen Mack
This is weird. I can post but If I try to like or comment on anyone's post (including mine) I get the "oops" message. But I saw Jennifer liked my post just now so it's not universal.
That reminds me of the trouble I had on 'announcement day.' I dumped my browser cache and it sorted out. - Jennifer Dittrich
Ok never mind, restarting the phone fixed it. - Stephen Mack
That's iPhones for you ;-) - Halil
Yeah. It was odd. Reloading the page didn't fix it. Force-quit and restarting the browser didn't fix it. But restarting the phone did fix it. Never seen that happen before. - Stephen Mack
Anyone else having trouble with likes or comments?
Not at the moment. - Jennifer Dittrich
I get the occasional oops - Halil

Nothing says "we're going to Hawaii in 12 days" quite like buying new luggage, snorkel sets, and bathing suits from Costco
Young Mondrian
(There's a story here here but I'll have to relate it later.) - Stephen Mack
So we were upstairs in the cafe a couple of weeks ago (like we are most Sundays) and there was some abstract art by local artists hanging. And so with the kids we got into a discussion of modern art and some of the pieces that sold for millions despite appearing on the surface that a child could conceivably have painted them (e.g., http://www.artsumo.com/blog... ). - Stephen Mack
Now, the cafe has coloring pages that allow you to "Make your own Mondrian" and provides crayons as well. So Samuel created his own piece. We then talked about art shows and showings and the expressions on an artist's face as he or she displays their completed work. Sammy was then talked into signing his work and hanging his completed Mondrian in between the local pieces, while staring off into the middle distance. - Stephen Mack
So, therefore, I present this photograph: Young Samuel Mondrian, with his newest work, "Composition with Blue and Yellow and Green and Red 2015." - Stephen Mack
Did he sneak a sip of my coffee maybe?
Spring trifecta ends splendid week — solar eclipse, supermoon and equinox [The Washington Post] - http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs...
From the article: "The past few days have been great for sky-watchers as a beautiful aurora sank as far south as the Midwest and Northeast on Tuesday night, the result of a severe geomagnetic storm. And Friday will add even more splendor as three astronomical events coincide on one day: a total solar eclipse, a supermoon and the vernal equinox." - Stephen Mack
I saw the eclipse, at least. :) - Jenny H.
Jenny, how was it? - Stephen Mack
Exciting! I didn't get to see the entire thing because of cloud cover, but it broke in time to see the second half. It was my first! :) - Jenny H.
The story out of Colorado with the two women is freaking me out and messing with my head. (No links or details because if you don't know about it already, best you don't investigate.)
I saw it in the Merc this morning and it's been haunting me all day. - Stephen Mack
oh my god. (yes, I've investigated :( ) - did
Bodies in Space [Bad Astronomy] - http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastr...
From the 2012 blog post by Phil Plait: "Artist Nathan Hoste got as tired as I was of Hollywood’s depiction of getting tossed out the airlock, so he decided to draw a series of comic book-like panels showing the fact and fiction of breathing vacuum. He’s calling the series Bodies in Space, and the drawings are really cool." - Stephen Mack
I didn't link to Hoste's site directly, since it's a bit weirdly formatted (doesn't allow linking to individual posts or tags) and sorta-kinda NSFW, but it's here: http://ghoste.net/ - Stephen Mack
If you're interested in topic of what actually happens to you if you were exposed to the vacuum of space, this blog post is very good: http://www.urban-astronomer.com/article... - Stephen Mack
