Woman pays $164K per year to live on luxury cruise ship - http://www.usatoday.com/story...
"Lee Wachtstetter, an 86-year-old Florida widow, took her daughter's advice. She sold her five-bedroom Fort Lauderdale-area home on 10 acres and became a permanent luxury cruise ship resident after her husband died. Mama Lee, as she's known aboard the 11-year-old Crystal Serenity, has been living on the 1,070-passenger vessel longer than most of its 655 crewmembers — nearly seven years." - rønin

When Americans Ate Horse Meat - http://priceonomics.com/when-am...
"In the words of one New York Times columnist, “Horses are America’s sacred cows” -- they are our companions, our honorable pals. Eating them, it seems, triggers our moral compass. As one NPR commentator elucidates, tongue-in-cheek, “It's okay to kill a ton of chickens and cows, but kill a horse? By golly, there's something wrong with you!” Yet, historically, when we have eaten horse -- either out of necessity, or, in the fashion of Harvard professors, for taste -- we’ve savored it." - rønin

The ugly truth about sexual assault: More men admit to it if you don’t call it rape - Salon.com - http://www.salon.com/2015...
"A recent study from researchers at the University of North Dakota offered some troubling data about the sex lives of college men. Among the respondents, a group of 73 straight male students, one in three reported that they would force a woman to have sex if they knew they could get away with it. According to the report, 31 percent of the men surveyed said they would force a woman to have sex “if nobody would ever know and there wouldn’t be any consequences.”" - rønin
"But when researchers asked the same question, this time dropping the language of forced sex and using the word rape instead, that number dropped to 13 percent. Respondents, it seems, were comfortable with the act of rape, just not the name. The findings, that copping to sexual violence can be a strange matter of semantics, aren’t all that unique, according to the researchers." - rønin
Huh, so apparently not paying for auctions you've won on eBay is no longer penalty-worthy. As a seller you can only open a case w/eBay for an unpaid item where they refund their fee but you can no longer leave negative feedback to the deadbeat buyer. When did they make that change?
Wow. That's a huge change and not really a good one. - Anika

Yeah I hadn't sold in a long time so wasn't aware of the change either. But I've had more deadbeat buyers in the past 2 months than I've had my first 14 years with them. At least the latest one finally paid up when I opened the non-payment case against them. - rønin
How Big Are The Biggest Squid, Whales, Sharks, Jellyfish? – Phenomena: Not Exactly Rocket Science - http://phenomena.nationalgeographic.com/2015...
"A few years ago, Carl Zimmer and I ran a workshop on science writing, where we talked, among other things, about explaining science without talking down to your audience. It apparently left an impression on Craig McClain, a marine biologist and blogger who was in the audience. “I made a comment about how I always wanted to write a post on how giant squid sizes are bullsh*t,” he recalls,” but that those always come off as an arrogant scientist telling the world that it’s wrong. And you said: You should write it, but you just need to find the right tone. That kicked me off.”" - rønin
A Guide to the Regional Ramen of Japan | Lucky Peach - http://luckypeach.com/a-guide...
"A bowl of ramen consists of four basic elements: the broth, the tare, the noodles, and the toppings. The broth is generally a mix of pork, chicken, seafood, and vegetables, with each shop crafting their own blend. Most mix various parts of pig and fowl, some add more complex elements, and some never reveal their secrets. Though most diners categorize ramen into shoyu, miso, shio, and tonkotsu types, many shops specialize in just one style, referred to simply as “ramen” on their menu. This guide details the basic characteristics of a number of established regional styles; it only scratches the surface of the myriad varieties of ramen being served every day across Japan." - rønin
Condo to loom over samurai graves in Japan, spurring protest - http://bigstory.ap.org/article...
"The "47 ronin" samurai who inspired the long-loved saga of loyalty and honor eulogized in films, books and plays are fighting a new kind of battle in urban Japan. An apartment complex is going up next to the curved tile-roofed Sengakuji temple where the three-century-old graves of the ronin, or masterless samurai, lie. The stone monuments, standing barely waist-high, are known here and elsewhere as a humble but proud testament to sacrificing one's life for what's right." - rønin
Live forever: Scientists say they’ll extend life ‘well beyond 120’ | Science | The Guardian - http://www.theguardian.com/science...
"One of the more unusual approaches being tested is using blood from the young to reinvigorate the old. The idea was borne out in experiments which showed blood plasma from young mice restored mental capabilities of old mice. A human trial under way is testing whether Alzhemier’s patients who receive blood transfusions from young people experience a similar effect. Tony Wyss-Coray, a researcher at Stanford leading the work, says that if it works he hopes to isolate factors in the blood that drive the effect and then try to make a drug that does a similar thing. (Since publishing his work in mice, many “healthy, very rich people” have contacted Wyss-Coray wondering if it might help them live longer.)" - rønin

Human lifespan linked to behaviour of Sun at time of their birth - Yahoo News Digest - http://yahoonewsdigest-intl.tumblr.com/post...
"Norwegian scientists say people born during periods of solar calm may live longer – as much as five years on average – than those who enter the world when the Sun is feisty. The team, from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, based their study on demographic data from church records of some 8,600 individuals from two different mid-Norwegian populations, one poor and one wealthy. This was matched to maps of historical solar cycles. The lifespan of those born in periods of solar maximum – interludes marked by powerful flares and geomagnetic storms – was “5.2 years shorter” on average than those born during a solar minimum, they found." - rønin

To Fall in Love With Anyone, Do This - NYTimes.com - http://www.nytimes.com/2015...
"More than 20 years ago, the psychologist Arthur Aron succeeded in making two strangers fall in love in his laboratory. Last summer, I applied his technique in my own life, which is how I found myself standing on a bridge at midnight, staring into a man’s eyes for exactly four minutes." - rønin
"I explained the study to my university acquaintance. A heterosexual man and woman enter the lab through separate doors. They sit face to face and answer a series of increasingly personal questions. Then they stare silently into each other’s eyes for four minutes. The most tantalizing detail: Six months later, two participants were married. They invited the entire lab to the ceremony." - rønin

Yes, actually. It's been determined that men are not as messy when they have a target. http://www.npr.org/templat...
