I just looked up freezing rain, sleet, wintry mix, and ice pellets to discern the differences amongst them all and have decided that this is perfect pancake weather.

The cause is temperature layers in the atmosphere. The practical difference is that freezing rain makes it EXTREMELY DANGEROUS to walk or drive because you get a slick sheet of glassy ice. Sleet stings your face if you walk in it, but it's usually pebbly when it's fallen, so not quite so bad to walk on. Ditto ice pellets. Wintry mix is unpredictable as hell and therefore dangerous as hell.
