What really sets it apart is how clean it feels. I use it with the Helvetica theme (but Deja Vu Sans and banner hidden through adblock , since I dislike Helvetica), a greasemonkey script to color-code my friends' comments. It's all whitespace and well-formatted content. - Goran Zec

3rd morning thought: Lessig's forthcoming Nation article at http://www.thenation.com/doc... -- we need to Change Congress now.
"Tiny minds" lacking imagination have killed more helpful change than anything else. In both business and politics. This is a well-argued piece and I recommend it. - Daniel Dulitz
2nd morning thought: being committed to one's design decisions isn't necessarily arrogance, though it can be.
I don't know anything about the Android-Linux argument at http://www.kroah.com/log... other than what I read there, but it looks to me like the kernel maintainers simply disagree with the Android folks about a core design decision, and are upset that Android is sticking to their guns. - Daniel Dulitz

First morning thought: are business-oriented folk so fixated on blogs "ripping off" original content that they ignore what readers want?
Never short a country with $2 trillion in reserves? - http://mpettis.com/2010...
China’s foreign reserves are certainly huge [...] about 5-6 % of global gross domestic product. But they are not unprecedented. Twice before in history a country has [...] run up foreign reserves of the same magnitude. The first time occurred in the late 1920s when, after a decade of record-beating trade and capital account surpluses, the United States had accumulated what John Maynard Keynes worriedly described as “all the bullion in the world”. At the time, total reserves accumulated by the US were more than 5-6% of global GDP. The second time occurred in the late 1980s, when it was Japan’s turn to [...] accumulate [...]s only a little less than the equivalent of 5-6% of global GDP. - Daniel Dulitz

Irony: You Need A Map To Find Google Street View On The iPhone - http://searchengineland.com/irony-y...
The iPhone StreetView UI is the most unituitive UI that Google created? Perhaps the Android UI is the UI that Google would have created? Better question is, why is StreetView so hard to find on the iPhone? - Daniel Dulitz
Oh my. I had vague memories of finding Street View on the iPhone but never found it again, and I had convinced myself it must've been a hallucination or a dream. - Amit Patel
Apple wrote the maps app on the iPhone, not google, though it uses google map tiles, search results, and directions. - Evan Parker
Maybe Apple is using it as an easter egg: when one person sees the white earbuds on another person, they can swap stories about how to use their devices. It's the true Social Web. - Daniel Dulitz

Deluded (or self-deluded) certainty is not a good way to make decisions in an unpredictable world.
Astonished at low-quality analysis of #GoogleCN . Pretend they know the outcome, as if anyone could, even Google or China.
The hubris of some analysts is just amazing. WHO KNOWS whose interests will be best served by Google's actions? It depends on the reactions of probably thousands of people, and no one even knows their names. - Daniel Dulitz
Only thing that can be said for certain is that Google decisionmakers preferred an uncertain outcome (resulting from changing the rules of the game) to a continuation of the existing game. - Daniel Dulitz

The pace of change - http://mpettis.com/2009...
Two great observations here. One: US manufacturing has NOT been declining as a percentage of the economy. Two: Creative destruction is required but is often penalized in a democracy. For me this brings to mind the excessive patent and copyright regimes that slow creative destruction (and prevent creativity). The recording industry, patent trolls, ... - Daniel Dulitz

Reminds me a bit of the Shiba Ryotaro memorial designed by Tadao Ando. (That one is much smaller than a public library; it's a 3 story space filled only with the books collected by Ryotaro.) I couldn't find any good pictures on a cursory googling besides CG recreations of it, though. - Andrew C (✔)
Thanks for the context, nor and Andrew. Maybe someone will build this someday, and if so I'll visit. :-) - Daniel Dulitz

Is urban migration the solution to China’s problems? - http://mpettis.com/2009...
"It is almost certainly true that as migrants move from the rural areas to the cities, their average consumption is likely to rise, but the key here is their net impact, not their total impact. So if rural migrants move to the city and become engaged in expanding infrastructure or manufactured products – after all they need to earn an income before they can start consuming – they are not necessarily resolving the domestic imbalance. They may actually be exacerbating it." - Daniel Dulitz
Kate Weare Company and project agora at ODC last night was beautiful. Sorry, it's sold out tonight too. - http://www.odcdance.org/event_v...
agora was intellectual and sweet, with couples literally in orbital rotation. Gripping. Kate Weare was raw and brilliant and playful (when has it ever been otherwise?) -- in the hottest performance I've ever seen. Pure direction, connection, and fireballs of make-love-not-war intensity. I'm still boggled this morning. Weare's Leslie Kraus and Douglas Gillespie walked on water, with Adrian Clark and Weare creating a fascinating n-body problem. - Daniel Dulitz
