Horrible to think about yet perfectly descriptive.
The consequences of a large reduction in ocean overturning would look nothing like the Hollywood film The Day After Tomorrow. But they would not be harmless either – e.g. for sea level (Levermann et al. 2005) particularly along the US east coast (Yin et al. 2009), marine ecosystems, fisheries and possibly even storminess in Europe (Woollings et... - http://dendroica.tumblr.com/post...

You need to know this number: $18,433. That’s the median amount in a 401(k) savings account, according to a recent report by the Employee Benefit Research Institute. Almost 40 percent of employees have less than $10,000, even as the proportion of companies offering alternatives like defined benefit pensions continues to drop. One of the key issues is that when people think of bees, they think of the European Honey Bee. But increasing scientific evidence indicates that our hundreds of native bee species are likely doing much of the pollination attributed to honey bees (see here, here and here for a few examples). And our native pollinators (including some bees and... - http://dendroica.tumblr.com/post...

Perhaps the most startling finding of the ACLU report is that during the summer of 2014, CPD conducted more than a quarter million stops of civilians that did not lead to an arrest. When comparing that number of stops to population in Chicago versus New York City at the height of that city’s controversial use of the stop-and-frisk practice,... - http://dendroica.tumblr.com/post...
Cruz is a long shot to win the nomination, but he is a canny politician with enough of a base of support to act as an ideological enforcer during the primaries. And one of the most important orthodoxies he will be policing is total, uncompromising opposition to what will invariably be referred to as “Obamacare.” Another notable aspect of Cruz’s... - http://dendroica.tumblr.com/post...

Cruz revealed this disturbing truth in an interview with The Des Moines Register in which he admitted that he “despises” avocado and also admitting he “dislikes it passionately.” This is extremely distressing and raises major questions about his judgment and abilities to represent the people of the great state of Texas. Cruz also said he wasn’t... - http://dendroica.tumblr.com/post...

Ugh, Tumblr managed to make its bookmarklet even worse. I had been using it to post my photos from Flickr since Flickr’s widget for posting to Tumblr screws up the tags. But now the bookmarklet is posting photos as videos and leaves out the attribution that it used to include automatically as a caption. So I’m not sure what to do now. - http://dendroica.tumblr.com/post...
Ugh, gross. I usually share from Flickr (it messes up some of the tags, but I usually just correct them.) It seems so odd that they'd do this. I hope they'll sort it out quickly. - Jennifer Dittrich

This spring my chorus is learning Haydn's The Seasons in preparation for the May concert.
One of the interesting things about it is that the subject matter is very much what one would expect from the Romantic movement, but the music is characteristic of the late 18th century. - John (bird whisperer)

The social media theorist Nathan Jurgenson describes users as developing “a ‘Facebook Eye’: our brains always looking for moments where the ephemeral blur of lived experience might best be translated into a Facebook post; one that will draw the most comments and ‘likes’.” We might feel this phenomenon in different ways, depending on which networks... - http://dendroica.tumblr.com/post...

It feels like this draws on the "I saw this and thought of you" or "I wish you'd been there for this" that predates social media, but that you see in photos, postcards, and letters. Of course, instead of intending that moment for just one person, it's often a number of people we keep in mind, because we can. - Jennifer Dittrich

We ate this on its own, but a few pita chips or a side of naan wouldn’t be so bad, either.
