Sorcery. How could this work?! - Amit Patel
How odd. I've never had these in my yard before, and suddenly, a flock of Band-Tailed Pigeons has been visiting for the past week. I counted around 70 of them in the trees, flying back and forth, squawking. It's like the movie THE BIRDS

The State of the Birds 2011 San Francisco Bay - Habitats: Managed Ponds - http://data.prbo.org/sfstate...
"Commercial salt ponds were constructed around the edge of San Francisco Bay beginning in the mid 1800s. Many former salt production ponds in San Francisco Bay have recently transitioned to public ownership and are being restored and managed for wildlife. These shallow ponds now provide habitat for hundreds of nesting terns, gulls, and shorebirds, and roosting and feeding habitat for hundreds of thousands of migrating and wintering shorebirds and ducks." - Amit Patel
Saw a magnificent Great Egret yesterday out our kitchen window and thought of you, Amit! My husband said later that day he saw a big hawk sitting on the power line out back. The back of our house is next to a marshy green belt. - Laura Norvig
Laura: awesome! We get some hawks and egrets, but lately it's been Band-Tailed Pigeons. - Amit Patel

"In the past, I've used premade mixes for red beans and rice. This was my first time doing it from scratch. I was out of stock pots, so I did it in layers." - Amit Patel
Hayward Shoreline on Sunday was great; on Monday I went to Palo Alto Baylands. And then it got windy so I haven't been out after that.

Strangest sight: all the avocets got together and lined up. Why? It looked like there was a hawk far overhead. I've never seen them do this before.

More from Hayward Shoreline. I went out the last few days but it's too windy today.

High tide at Hayward Shoreline had fewer birds but it was interesting to see how far up the water came.
Hayward Shoreline continues to be my favorite bird photography spot. The birds are so close to the trail! Low tide turns out to be better than high tide.

Last Thu it rained quite a bit. Last Fri & Sat were big waves (25 ft). Last Sat, Sun, Mon, Tue were high tide (6 ft). I went Sat morning to catch the combination of the three. Waves were powerful, eating the cliffs. Water running off the side of hills.

Random thought: in large part due to the web/internet, text and video has moved from having few producers (most people consume only) to many producers (using youtube, friendfeed, twitter, facebook), whereas with computing hardware, we seem to be moving from many producers to few producers (tablet/phone seem more for consumption)
All warmed up and nowhere to go: The missing El Niño of 2014 - GeoSpace - AGU Blogosphere - http://blogs.agu.org/geospac...
"But despite high expectations, the predicted El Niño of 2014 has ultimately fizzled." - Amit Patel
"Finally, McPhaden said, the pool of warm water in the western Pacific has been expanding over the past 50 years as a result of climate change. As the ocean warms, it may become increasingly difficult for even the strongest westerly winds to move this massive pool of water enough trigger an El Niño. If this is the case, McPhaden told GeoSpace, the Pacific may have become a fundamentally more stable place, and we may see fewer El Niños in the future." - Amit Patel

Scrolling back in time to the 9th, you can really see the advance against certain landmarks. I've looked into the crater of an active volcano and seen the lava bubbling inside, but I've never seen lava flow. It must be amazing to see it move (but not when it's coming towards people, of course). - bentley
I was patient. The egret caught a fish.
