In honor of Joe Pierce's question on Friend Feed, I decided to ask a bunch of my bar customers tonight, "Would you rather take 10 slaps now, or 5 slaps at random, unknown times?" The data is in and 61.6% of my customers would rather get it over with and take 10 slaps now.

Somebody said that it was a topic on "How I Met Your Mother." True?

The people who said 10 slaps now seemed to be more organized (they didn't want anything new to worry about). The 5 random slap people tended to be female and/or people who lived in the moment.

Pea, I didn't necessary see a connection between the amount of alcohol consumed, but I did see a connection with the time of day they were asked.
- Ben Hanten
People who were asked around 4pm (before most people are off work) tended towards 5. People asked between 5pm - 9pm overwhelmingly were 10 slaps. And the late crowd started going toward 5 again.

Do you remember the Family Guy episode where Brian owed Stewie a punch? Stewie was watching his back constantly, flinching and generally freaking out. That's why 10 up front makes more sense to me.
- Ben Hanten
Hah this is so awesome! I actually really like this question, and as Pea said it is from How I Met Your Mother. As I said before I'd take the 10 now. That would just be physical pain, but the 5 over time could lead to mental stress. Much like the Brian/Stewie punch.

I also think the '5 later' people think that they can somehow evade the slaps later. They might get hit by a bus so why worry?

Higlet, that was brought up a lot, too. They figured they might die before they get all 5 slaps.
- Ben Hanten
I think that's probably consistent with psychology... i mean, ppl have a problem with the uncertainty, right? so, knowing that the slappage is inevitable, they figure that the uncertainty is worse
