No reason you should have to cross those lines unless you totally want to IMO.

lists are my salvation on facebook too - can segregate by language, by trust level, and also separate the noisy player-of-games from the rest

You know you can selectively block people from seeing certain things on FB. It's quite handy for such things.

As a boss (or former at this point) I found great benefit to "friending" my staff members. There were a few times where they posted things (not specific) about how crappy their day was. I was then able to talk to them and actually head-off some potential HR issues. Most of the time however, I ignore most of what they're posting.

Joelle Nebbe+++ you said it. I have carefully curated a set of killer lists which allows me to friend up even business clients, bosses, family and, ahem, even "friends." Take a bit of work to get the perfect set up but I can confidently post to selected demographics or to all. Works a treat.

Slippy, very true. I hate it when companies treat social networks as an extension of an employee's work life. They have no business doing that.

My line is that I dont friend people on facebook that i am still working with. I add people once they or I have left, if there are shared interests and liking enough. I say it up front, although there are a few rare exceptions (people i work with but also hang out as friends with). The reason is that i dont want to mix too many "audiences" and bore too many people no matter what i post. My friends and family would be bored by what i would post for colleagues, and my colleagues dont even speak the language of half my friends and family.

My wife's cousin and her husband aren't even friends on Facebook.
- Jeff Quinton
I'm not friends with my wife. Although, she doesn't really use FB.

worst mistake I ever made was friending my boss on FB absolutely the worst mistake I have made since I woke up naked in a dumpster downtown.

Yeah, I will never friend my coworkers or boss on FB.
