Everything revolved around the wall. In the 80s, living as a military brat in Germany, it was the clear line between communism and capitalism. Between confinement and freedom. The line that would be crossed to begin WWIII. I was back in the states for a little more than a year when word came that the wall was falling. I couldn't believe it.

One of my best friends was also a teenage army brat in Germany in the 80s. She said the wall was a visible reminder of why the army was in Germany, but as a teen she mostly just thought it was cool that she was allowed to pass through with an armed escort.
