My new Roomba was happily sucking up all the furballs on the floor in the living room when I heard it make an error sound. Turns out it was trying to vacuum up a dead rat. Too bad it couldn't.

Lessons on gay history cut homophobic bullying in north London school | Education | The Guardian - http://www.guardian.co.uk/educati...
"A north London school which has developed lessons on gay historical figures who suffered persecution claims to have succeeded in "more or less eliminating homophobic bullying" in its classrooms and playgrounds over the last five years. The life story of the wartime code-breaker Alan Turing is among those being used to tackle homophobia. Authors Oscar Wilde and James Baldwin and artist Andy Warhol also feature. Now Stoke Newington secondary plans to share the lessons with hundreds of primary and secondary school teachers. By the summer, it will have trained more than a hundred teachers in how to "educate and celebrate" being gay." - Shannon Jiménez
I heard a KB Homes commercial on the radio while driving home tonight. They're having some sort of super sale on new homes this weekend. At the end of the commercial, during the legalese, they said "only one offer per household." Are they really expecting people living together to say, "Hey, these houses are so cheap, we can each get one!"?
Also, if that were the case, wouldn't they WANT to sell two houses? - Shannon Jiménez

The art and science of carrying things on your head. - By Jessica Dweck - Slate Magazine - http://www.slate.com/id...
"With most load-bearing methods, the heavier the weight, the more energy you need to burn to carry it. Not so with head porterage. Based on studies of women of the Luo and Kikuyu tribes of East Africa, researchers have found that people can carry loads of up to 20 percent of their own body weight without expending any extra energy beyond what they'd use by walking around unencumbered. Above that figure, however, metabolic costs seem to increase proportionally with load weight. But don't start stacking groceries on your head just yet. The subjects in these studies began head-loading as children and had developed a peculiar gait that's one-third more efficient than the one we're likely to use." - Shannon Jiménez
I've always been amazed by the load-bearing capacity of the women in Guatemala. - Shannon Jiménez
When we watch documentaries, we always look up how they do it, then try to do it here. It is amazing how much stuff we can pile up there, but we can't even walk our short hallway without stuff falling. - Anika

It's 8:30 pm and still 100 degrees out. Mother Nature is sure trying to make up for the cool July we had!
I wish I could claim a cool July for the reason it's still over 100 out there. I like to think it's because I live in the fiery pits of hell. ;) - Jenny
9-Day Traffic Jam Stretches 62 Miles | Autopia | Wired.com - http://www.wired.com/autopia...
"Thousands of trucks have jammed National Expressway 110 since Aug. 14, creating a traffic jam stretching 100 kilometers. Authorities attribute the mess to highway construction exacerbated by accidents and breakdowns. Police are trying to keep tempers from flaring in what is the second massive jam to tie up the highway in the past month.... No one expects things to improve until the project wraps up on Sept. 13." - Shannon Jiménez

Subtitles: Lost in too much translation | The Economist - http://www.economist.com/blogs...
"We were watching "Flickering Lights", a Danish crime caper. She's Danish and I speak the language passably. They did an acceptable job with most of the dialogue, though they couldn't really capture the clash of dialect when the Copenhagen toughs find themselves in rural Jutland. What annoyed me this time was that they didn't translate but transposed proper names and places, apparently in the belief that English-speaking audiences want a movie set in Denmark to seem as though it were set in Cleveland." - Shannon Jiménez
Most countries think of the World Cup as a football tournament. Why do we call the game soccer? - By Brian Phillips - Slate Magazine - http://www.slate.com/id...
"From this Victorian snarl, still more forms of football emerged. The gridiron style that now holds sway in America evolved in the later 19th century, from versions of rugby and association football that had been imported to the United States from Britain. For many years, the gridiron game was only one of many forms of football played in America. Around the world, the F.A.'s version of the game continued to be called association football to distinguish it from the rest. In the 1880s, popular British slang took the soc from association and turned it into soccer. Throughout the first half of the 20th century, soccer, football, and soccer football were used more or less interchangeably throughout the English-speaking world. After a while, however, football began to prevail in countries where the F.A.'s rules were most popular, while soccer rose to the fore in countries (the United States, Canada, Australia) where a different version of the game predominated." - Shannon Jiménez

Extinction Countdown: Delisted and in danger: Gulf oil spill threatens brown pelicans months after they are dropped from endangered species list - http://www.scientificamerican.com/blog...
"Images of oil-caked brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) have hit the front pages of countless U.S. newspapers and other media in the past week, driving home the still-growing impact of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. So far, dozens of pelicans have been transported to rescue centers for treatment. The number is only expected to rise as the oil spill spreads and covers Louisiana's Queen Bess Island Pelican Rookery and other important breeding sites. It is quite a blow for a species that was on the endangered species list until just six months ago. It had taken brown pelicans nearly 50 years to recover from the devastating effects of DDT and other pesticides that nearly wiped them out." - Shannon Jiménez
