"There are some things in this world that will never be forgotten, this week’s 40th anniversary of the moon landing for one. But Moore’s Law and our ever-increasing quest for simpler, smaller, faster and better widgets and thingamabobs will always ensure that some of the technology we grew up with will not be passed down the line to the next generation of geeks" - Shannon Jiménez

Why the #$%! Do We Swear? For Pain Relief: Scientific American - http://www.scientificamerican.com/article...
"Although cursing is notoriously decried in the public debate, researchers are now beginning to question the idea that the phenomenon is all bad. "Swearing is such a common response to pain that there has to be an underlying reason why we do it," says psychologist Richard Stephens of Keele University in England, who led the study. And indeed, the findings point to one possible benefit: "I would advise people, if they hurt themselves, to swear," he adds." - Shannon Jiménez

Saving the environment from behind bars: Scientific American Blog - http://www.scientificamerican.com/blog...
"Paid just 85-cents-per-hour, inmates at a Seattle-area prison provide a relatively inexpensive source of scientific labor. But who knew they could also grow frogs better than some traditional research facilities? The Seattle Times reports today about the stunning success a pair of inmates have had raising endangered Oregon spotted frogs at the Ceder Creek Corrections Center. Only eight frogs have died out of the 80 eggs the two men started with in early April—a loss rate well below that of two zoos and a wildlife park that are also involved in the research project." - Shannon Jiménez
Do babies like color? If so, which ones? : Cognitive Daily - http://scienceblogs.com/cogniti...
"Babies do have color preferences, and these preferences seem to be mostly determined by hue. Blues and purples are babies' favorites, while greens, yellows, and reds are liked less." - Shannon Jiménez
Language Log » Experiencing language death - http://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll...
"Usarufa is a language of Papua New Guinea with just 1200 speakers (ISO-639 code "usa"). There's no fluent speakers under the age of 25, so the language must be considered moribund....I played them a recording of the "last words" of the Jiwarli language of Western Australia. After some questioning looks I explained that this language is now dead, and we were listening to its last speaker before he died. As one they all looked down, shaking their heads in disbelief and saying sorry, sorry, sorry…. It was as if I told them a mutual friend had died. They urged me to put that recording on a cassette tape so they could take it back to their village. That way, everyone would surely understand what will happen to the Usarufa language unless there are serious attempts to revitalize it." - Shannon Jiménez
Stone Age jams: Humans playing the flute for at least 35,000 years, no word yet on sax: Scientific American Blog - http://www.scientificamerican.com/blog...
"Carved flutes dating back some 35,000 years were discovered during a dig last summer at an upper Paleolithic site in southwestern Germany, making them among—if not the—oldest documented musical instruments, reports a study published today in Nature." - Shannon Jiménez
Edge: HOW DOES OUR LANGUAGE SHAPE THE WAY WE THINK? By Lera Boroditsky - http://edge.org/3rd_cul... (via http://friendfeed.com/languag...)
"For a long time, the idea that language might shape thought was considered at best untestable and more often simply wrong. Research in my labs at Stanford University and at MIT has helped reopen this question. We have collected data around the world: from China, Greece, Chile, Indonesia, Russia, and Aboriginal Australia. What we have learned is that people who speak different languages do indeed think differently and that even flukes of grammar can profoundly affect how we see the world." - Shannon Jiménez
