A Linguist Explains the Grammar of Doge. Wow. - http://the-toast.net/2014...
"Doge speak is clearly composed of subunits which are divided by a period in running text, which I’m going to call doge phrases. The period is optional in images, but in that case the phrases are scattered artistically around the picture. Here are some examples of doge phrases:" - Amit Patel
Explorable Explanations - http://explorableexplanations.com/
"“Explorable Explanations” was coined by Bret Victor in a stunning essay that mixed text with interactivity. To his readers, the article wasn't just a passive monologue, but an active dialogue." - Amit Patel

After driving past Shasta I saw an amazing sky.
Glowing colors coming from behind distant mountains. Gold and pink wispy clouds in front of fading blue skies. Snow capped volcanoes reflecting orange light. Magical. - Amit Patel

Fantastic skies above Shasta when I went back in January.
More photos of Sandhill Cranes coming into Pixley NWR at sunset. This was back in January but I decided I'd better start posting my sunset shots to FF.
Sandhill Cranes. There are tens of thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands, of these huge birds that come to California's Central Valley every winter. I was fortunate enough to see *thousands* of them flying into Pixley NWR at sunset. It was amazing! They just kept coming and coming.
LambdaMOO is still around.
The company that started it wasn't going to keep it running forever, but they gave it to a trusted individual who's keeping it running even though he's not active there. - Amit Patel

Wearable computing? How about … SOCKS? - Amit Patel
Just something I did while bored last week … http://www.redblobgames.com/x...
Did I mention … lots and lots of hawks? All of these were on a 6 mile stretch of road.
Still going through photos from January! I went to Kern National Wildlife Refuge and saw a coyote, some white-faced ibises, and then lots and lots of hawks.

Desert Wildflower Reports for Southern California by DesertUSA - http://www.desertusa.com/wildflo...
Time to go see wildflowers! - Amit Patel
Interesting. I went there yesterday and there was very little. However, I think if I had gone to the north side (hiking longer than I had time for) I might've seen some. GOOD NEWS though is that desertusa's site pointed to some other locations with really amazing fields of flowers! I saw lots of orange (poppies) and yellows in Lancaster, and lots of purples by Soda Lake at Carrizo Plain. Pics soon. - Amit Patel

http://www.youtube.com/watch... Cool microwave oven design
TL;DW: put an IR camera inside to see the temperature of the food, and then a screen on the front of the microwave to show the temperature what's inside. You can then see when it turns all white, it's hot (on the outside at least). - Amit Patel
And then also use the screen for other purposes. - Anne Bouey

The Science of Why No One Agrees on the Color of This Dress | WIRED - http://www.wired.com/2015...
"The fact that a single image could polarize the entire Internet into two aggressive camps is, let’s face it, just another Thursday. But for the past half-day, people across social media have been arguing about whether a picture depicts a perfectly nice bodycon dress as blue with black lace fringe or white with gold lace fringe. And neither side will budge. This fight is about more than just social media—it’s about primal biology and the way human eyes and brains have evolved to see color in a sunlit world." - Amit Patel
Why cant we all agree that its a horrible dress and a shitty picture? - CW
This series of photos really illustrates what's going on, though. - Spidra Webster
Sorry still don't like it. Just not my style or color.. what ever color you see it in. :D - CW
Around an hour ago I checked the Pebble Time kickstarter and it was at $9.9999 million, so I hit refresh, and it hit $10.0000 million, whee.

ODOT Plots The Demise Of Oregon-Style Speed Signs? - http://www.aaroads.com/forum...
Oregon's speed limits signs say "SPEED" not "SPEED LIMIT". One of the posters on this forum says: - Amit Patel
"under Oregon law speed limit signs say just "SPEED" (not "SPEED LIMIT") to indicate that the limit in question is prima facie in nature, not absolute--in other words, you can defend yourself against a speeding citation by showing that your speed, even if it was in excess of that posted, was not unsafe under the conditions. "SPEED LIMIT" signs were rolled out for Interstates and school zones when the speed limits for those became absolute. It now sounds like absolute speed limits are being rolled out to all public roads in Oregon, not just the Interstates and school zones." - Amit Patel
