People who own houses in decent neighborhoods are reluctant to rent to people with a section 8 subsidy because they think they won't maintain the property or be good neighbors. Crime spikes in a neighborhood, people blame it on section 8. So far the only place I've seen that didn't have "no dogs" in the listing was a raggedy little house with a questionable fence, right next to what appears to be a popular illegal dumping site, and had (maybe gang?) graffiti everywhere on the block. - Starmama

That's tough. Did the landlord just add the no-pet clause? If so, you might want to check to see if California has laws against that. If they don't, I know it's tough but you might want to start looking for good homes for your dogs. You have to do what is right for your son. I'm so sorry. - Shevonne

The landlord won't paint the house so the housing authority will cancel my voucher if I don't find another place by the end of November. I've been trying to find homes for 2 of the dogs for nearly 3 years. I know literally zero people who are responsible pet owners who want chihuahuas. The shelters are overrun with them and they're euthanized in pretty high numbers. - Starmama

And I can't even keep my appts straight or keep up with the housework or my medicine or all the things due, how the fuck am I gonna do this? I don't even have gas to go anywhere half the month, how I'm gonna look? Pay owners $20 or more each for credit checks that tell them my credit's horrendous? packing? Organizing? Go to local pet stores in neighborhoods you would actually want to live in, and hang a sign on their bulletin board, asking for an apartment, Sec-8 & pets ok. Be honest and say exactly what you have in the way of pets (amount, size, breed, etc.). - April Russo (FForever!)

I read it could cost $2000 to $4000 and up to paint a two story house. I would donate $200 but i don't think that would get you very far. :( - Todd Hoff

I don't know if there's anything similar in the East Bay but in SF there's an SF Chihuahua Meetup. I know it's not easy for you to get to SF but maybe you know someone who can do it for you. That could be a good place to network for prospective dog owners. I think it's really difficult to rent in the Bay Area with a dog even if it's not Section 8, unfortunately. But I think April's idea is a good one if there's a chance of finding a Section 8 landlord who's fine with dogs. - Spidra Webster
