We Have Reached Peak Internet Cat - http://readwrite.com/2015...
The biggest line on North Congress Avenue—one of the main arteries of Austin's SXSW festival—wasn't for a band or rockstar techie. No, it was for Grumpy Cat, the Internet's most famous feline. Grumpy Cat being grumpy about being awoken from her nap at SXSW. As fan after fan snapped a picture with Grumpy Saturday afternoon at Haus of Bacon (don't ask, it's SXSW), a plane flew overhead dragging a banner bearing her face. It's been three years since the cat first blew up on Reddit, and sometimes it feels like the whole world is hers. Memes, commercials and brand-emblazoned products—she has done them all. At Haus of Bacon, artist Jason Mecier was hard at work crafting a bust of Grumpy out of bacon. Portraits of the whole group of Internet-famous cats making appearances at SXSW lined the walls -- some made from bits of bacon, and others from more traditional mediums. Waffles gets a grip on his surroundings at Haus of Bacon. Upstairs, Waffles the Scottish fold cat was prepping for his... - Web2024

Keeping The Internet's Past Alive—And "Boring As Hell" (In A Good Way) - http://readwrite.com/2015...
On March 9, Gigaom abruptly laid off its entire staff, including me. It's heartbreaking to lose a job like that, but support networks have a way of making you feel certain new opportunities are on the way. What's not certain is the past. During my two years at Gigaom, I wrote close to 1,000 articles. My senior colleagues have five times more in their archives. We have no idea if or when Gigaom.com will be taken down. It's as if years of our lives could disappear in an instant. There are support networks for this kind of situation as well. The Internet Archive, for example, has been grabbing Gigaom's web pages as fast as it can, according to archivist and software curator Jason Scott. I had the chance to sit in on Scott's SXSW panel and felt the worry lift from my shoulders just the slightest bit. Remembering The Internet—All Of It Most of us know the Internet Archive from the Wayback Machine, which allows you to drop in and browse a website at any point in its history. "Ready Player One" Author Ernie Cline Talks Oculus And The Future Of Virtual Reality - http://readwrite.com/2015...
Ernie Cline is running 20 minutes late. Finally, he finds a parking spot and slides in his 1982 DeLorean, its sides emblazoned with the Ghostbusters logo and a license plate that reads ECTO88. Virtual reality and gaming buffs might recognize it as protagonist Wade Watts' car from Cline's breakout novel Ready Player One. "It's bad form to show up late in a time machine," he says. "What's your excuse, dude?" Ready Player One was published in 2011, when lifelike virtual reality still felt like a distant conquest. It imagines a dystopia where most of its characters live in poverty and see the OASIS, a vast world accessible through virtual reality goggles, as an escape from their true reality. "Ready Player One" was published in 2011, when virtual reality still felt distant. Cline began brainstorming Ready Player One in 2001, when he asked himself what would if happen if Willy Wonka was a video game designer. The Future Of Mobile May Not Look Like Apps - http://readwrite.com/2015...
The Web as we know it is about to fundamentally change, according to one its luminaries. WordPress may power nearly a quarter of all websites, but Drupal is no slouch, either, running roughly 5% of all websites globally and 12% of the top 100,000 websites. So when Drupal founder Dries Buytaert declares the Web "will go through a massive re-architecture and re-platforming in the next decade," it's worth digging in to see what he means. From Pull To Push The Web has served us well for over two decades, serving up content that does everything from helping us become better people to teaching us to change diapers. (Hint: If you don't usually help out around the house, the answer to the former may have much to do with the latter.) But that content requires us to find it and, frankly, in an instant gratification society, the world of Google-esque searching may be far too hard for us. At least, that's the gist of what Buytaert argues: The current Web is "pull-based," meaning we visit websites... - Web2024

Can We Really Trust Linux? - http://www.makeuseof.com/tag...
Who makes Linux? Why are they giving it away? Can these people be trusted? Longtime Linux users might laugh at this question, but think about it from another perspective. In the age of Facebook, when “free” often turns out to mean “ad-supported and will track your every move”, anyone who isn’t familiar with open source licenses is going to be skeptical of anything that’s “free”. “If you’re not paying, you’re the product“, the adage goes. So it needs to be said: Linux, and other open source software, isn’t free in the sense that Facebook or Gmail are – that is,... Read the full article: Can We Really Trust Linux? - Web2024
Cortana Reportedly Wants To Bust Out Of Windows Jail—But Then What? - http://readwrite.com/2015...
Microsoft Cortana: heading to iOS and Android? Microsoft's Cortana app will make its way to iOS and Android devices in the near future, a new report from Reuters says, quoting "people familiar with the matter." The rumor has in fact been doing the rounds for some time: Last November, Microsoft executive Julie Larson-Green hinted that such a move was on the cards in a briefing with reporters. Getting the app on other devices is one thing; getting anyone to use it is quite another. Assuming Cortana jumps out of Windows, can it thrive elsewhere? Digital Assistants Go To War It's the latest move in a fascinating battle between the digital assistant apps—Microsoft's Cortana, Apple's Siri and Google Now—that are becoming more and more integral to the mobile platforms they represent. (Indeed, stock Android 5.0 is little more than Google Now plus some extra wrapping.) All these apps offer voice control, intelligent searches, and varying levels of personalization. Siri, which was wrapped into... - Web2024
Google's New App Shows Off Multi-Screen App Development - http://readwrite.com/2015...
Google released a sample app to introduce Android developers to programming for multi-device applications. Called Universal Music Player, the reference app is bare bones and not consumer-ready, but functional on all Android devices. Between desktops, tablets, smartphones and wearables, the number of devices we have at our fingertips keeps growing. While exciting for consumers, it creates a new problem for developers scrambling to make their work available on every screen. See also: 10 Developer Tips To Build A Responsive Website [Infographic] On the Web, developers can use responsive design to make a website adapt or “respond” to its context, adjusting size and layout to accommodate the device accessing it—whether a desktop, tablet or phone. With Universal Music Player, Google wants to show how responsive design can work for apps. Ideally, developers will only have to write their app once to suit all Android displays. Of course, the notion isn't unique to Google or Android. This... - Web2024

USB Type-C, The All-In-One Cable Of The Future - http://readwrite.com/2015...
In the last week we've seen both Apple and Google launch laptops with a new brand of port attached: USB Type-C (or USB-C for short). In the case of the MacBook, in fact, it's the only port on offer. See also: How The New Chromebook Pixel Gives The MacBook A Run For Its Money USB-C normally gets mentioned as a new "reversible" take on the familiar old USB cable—i.e., one you can plug in either way. But there's way more to USB-C than its reversibility, although we certainly won't miss the days of trying to jam in a USB plug the wrong way up. USB Type-C can carry data, power, audio and video USB-C also faster charging, quicker data transfer and the ability to handle a variety of tasks, from video output to copying files. It's likely to make the jump to smartphones and tablets in the near future, as well as the next wave of laptop machines. In short, it's safe to say you're going to be seeing more of USB-C—a lot more, given the likelihood that it may simply displace many other cables and... - Web2024

Whisper Says It Doesn't Track Your Exact Location—But It Still Could - http://readwrite.com/2015...
Concerns over just how anonymous the secret-sharing app Whisper is are back in the news, and the company is once again suggesting that there's no way it could track its users' exact location. There's just one problem: That's almost certainly not true. To be clear: Whisper emphatically denies that it tracks users that precisely. But that's not the same thing as saying it can't. See also: Whisper's Users May Not Be That Anonymous After All Last October, the Guardian ignited a privacy firestorm with a series of report that claimed Whisper monitors the whereabouts of users—even those who had specifically opted out of location sharing—and could track their position within a 500-meter radius. Much of the furor surrounds the fact that Whisper knows and stores its users' "IP addresses"—a numerical label that identifies a computer or smartphone to the Internet. At the time, Whisper acknowledged that it has access to and stores user IP addresses, but disputed the Guardian's specific claims that... - Web2024

I have a reactive dog. If you don’t have a reactive dog, you may underestimate the sadness and heartache that can afflict pet owners who do. Owning a reactive dog is difficult because their triggers often set them into a frenzy of barking or lunging or some other excessive reaction. You get lots of disapproving stares and glares when your dog acts out, and people even give your dog that look — the one that says ‘that thing is a menace to society.’ For a while, I didn’t know what to make of my dog’s reactivity. All You Need to Know about Video Codecs, Containers, and Compression - http://www.makeuseof.com/tag...
Explaining the difference between codecs and containers is relatively simple, but hard part is attempting to understand each format. The lines start to get blurred when you realize that most common codecs aren’t exclusive, and can make use of multiple compression technologies in order to get the job done. The blurred line becomes nearly invisible when you start to talk about formats like MPEG-4 which could be classified as a bit of a container and a bit of a codec, but that’s a rather complicated classification that’s best left for another time. So, how do you teach yourself the difference between... Read the full article: All You Need to Know about Video Codecs, Containers, and Compression - Web2024

The Twiddler is a one-handed keyboard device which works using chording to theoretically enable typing at up 240 words per minute; and it has a mouse pointer. Mind blown yet? Those are called Stenotype machines, and allow the users to type entire words by combining multiple keystrokes into single ‘chords’.
