Twiddler 3 Review and Giveaway - http://www.makeuseof.com/tag...
The Twiddler is a one-handed keyboard device which works using chording to theoretically enable typing at up 240 words per minute; and it has a mouse pointer. Mind blown yet? If you’ve ever been in a courtroom, you’ve probably noticed the person in the corner diligently typing away at breakneck speed on a little typewriter-like device. Those are called Stenotype machines, and allow the users to type entire words by combining multiple keystrokes into single ‘chords’. The Twiddler 3, from Canadian outfit TekGear, takes that principle and applies it outside of the courtroom. It costs $199, and fits snugly in the palm of... Google Maps on Android: Everything You Need to Know - http://www.makeuseof.com/tag...
Do you remember life before Google Maps? I vaguely recall Mapquest, which was a life saver, and before that, huge paper maps that always refused to fold back up properly when I was done. By contrast, today we have access to free super-powered GPS apps that work all over the world. Never again do we have to worry about being lost. What a time to be alive! Yet while Maps is simple and straightforward — enough so that a first-time user can still find what they need — there are several lesser-known tips, tricks, and features that can make your life much... Only a select few stand out, so, as befitting the name, we want to know which favicons are your personal favorites. Favorite, Favorite, Favorite We want to know, What Are Your Favorite Favicons? The Pollution Documentary China’s Government Doesn’t Want You To See [Stuff to Watch] - http://www.makeuseof.com/tag...
Last week China experienced a viral sensation that sent great plumes of controversy across the country as a new documentary exploring the worsening pollution crisis spread like a coal fire in a power plant. The film was watched more than 100 million times in the first 24 hours alone. On Friday, Chinese authorities started removing the film from Chinese video hosting services, shortly before the full English translation landed on YouTube. A leaked directive from the Chinese government even orders the media not to report on the film. For those of us in liberal Western democracies, the film is only a click away and makes for an eye-opening... Why I'll Miss The Nexus 5 - http://readwrite.com/2015...
When Google and Motorola revealed the Nexus 6, a giant-sized Android phablet that launched late last year, the Nexus 5’s days were officially numbered. And with Wednesday’s grand opening of Google’s new digital storefront for hardware, the Google Store, it seems that the Nexus 5 wasn’t invited to the party. Searching the site for the LG-made handset turns up no results, and the Nexus 5 product page spells it out. The Nexus 5 is dead. Long live the Nexus 5. Pure Android Bliss I bought my Nexus 5 in January 2014 when I switched mobile carriers from Sprint to T-Mobile. The previous two Android phones I’d been using had left me extremely frustrated for one reason or another. The Samsung Galaxy 4G Epic, a QWERTY slider, ran Samsung’s TouchWiz’d interpretation of Android 2.2. It had buggy bloatware, crashed constantly, and for some reason, the phone’s GPS sensor liked to stop working just as I would start to drive to my destination. How Modular Smartphones Will Change Mobile Computing - http://www.makeuseof.com/tag...
With Android, Google managed to build an open standard for mobile operating systems, daring anyone and everyone to build upon and adapt it. Now, with an ambitious project dubbed “Project Ara,” it hopes to do the same for mobile hardware. Specifically, Google wants to create the world’s first completely customizable smartphone. You’ll be able to choose what ‘modules’ are most important to you, and — if necessary — pop them out and replace them. If having a high-end smartphone camera is important to you, you’ll probably want to have a nice camera module. But let’s say you’re running low on battery... Still using a 32-bit Windows machine? Here’s how to remove the 4GB limit that might be hampering your RAM usage. While 32-bit was once the standard, in recent years more and more Windows users have migrated to the 64-bit version of the OS. However, there are still some holdouts using 32-bit systems — and they might well be missing out on some of the potential of their hardware if they haven’t addressed a known issue with RAM on that sort of machine. Fortunately, there’s a relatively simple solution to the problem, so long as you’re comfortable using the command line... "Reactive" Systems: Easy To Program, Now Easier To Manage - http://readwrite.com/2015...
Enterprise deployment of "reactive" systems is no longer a fringe concept enjoyed by a handful of early adopters. According to the Reactive Manifesto, developing these message-driven, elastic, resilient, consistent, and highly responsive applications is what’s fueling the new wave of systems that are deployed on everything from mobile devices to cloud-based clusters running thousands of multi-core processors. Users expect millisecond response times and constant uptime. See also: As Systems Get More Complex, Programming Is Getting "Reactive" Web-giant enterprises like Twitter, Facebook, Google and Netflix measure their data in petabytes, but even smaller companies face enormous pressure to keep pace with the market. Expectations have changed—rather than batch processing, both users and lines of business expect data to be processed in real-time for both user experience and a competitive advantage in the market. This can strain legacy architectures, even those dealing with “medium data”... - Web2024

Amazon Is Finally Starting To Harness The Visual Web - http://readwrite.com/2015...
Amazon has launched a visually dominant storefront for showcasing exclusive products. Called Amazon Exclusives, this Pinterest-like image grid allows users to browse through products from paddleboards to patterned Mary Janes that are only for sale on Amazon. “Amazon Exclusives is comprised of sellers that have chosen to sell their products only on the Amazon Marketplace and through their own websites and physical stores,” the company wrote, and other than that, the products have little in common. The grid display appears to have been chosen order to encourage browsing instead of searching behavior. "We are using a unique product layout to better showcase the items to make the store visually appealing to customers and fun to navigate," an Amazon spokesperson told me by email. You may recognize the image grid from Pinterest, of course, but also other visual shopping sites and apps like Wanelo, Polyvore, Wish, Etsy, and eBay’s iPad app overhaul. Desks are an essential piece of office furniture that generally don’t come cheap. Fortunately, you can build your own custom sit/stand desk for as little as $50-$150 that can fit any space, functions better, and looks better than many store bought desks! I designed my DIY desk using MDF board with a standing portion for my wife. 21st-century women, girls, and other people with vaginas are not defined by one style, or by one colour palette. We wear pants, we value education, and we’re slowly gaining freedom around the world. We appreciate resources that can help us make informed decisions about our health privately. Many of us also get our period (roughly) every month, and keeping track of it ought to be quick and painless (even though menstruating isn’t, am I right?). At this point, I’d like to say: Yes, we’re talking about periods. Even if you don’t get a period, you’re welcome to stick around — if... Engineers Bring A New Open-Source Siri To Life - http://readwrite.com/2015...
Clarity Lab engineers review their work on Sirius Google has Google Now, Apple has Siri and Microsoft has Cortana—these personal digital assistants are playing an increasingly dominant role on mobile and desktop. Now researchers from the University of Michigan have unveiled an open-source alternative called Sirius, the latest of several similar open-source efforts along the same line. Mobile phone makers, wearable startups and app developers could all potentially use Sirius to bring some instant smarts to their projects in the not-too-distant future, Jason Mars, one of the co-directors at U-M's Clarity Lab where the system has been developed, said in a video: Unlike Google Now, Siri and Cortana, Sirius is free to use and can be customized as required by anyone interested in the technology. "Now the core technology is out of the bag, and we all have access to it," says Mars in a press statement. "Instead of making an app to run on the Apple Watch, for example, maybe I could make my own... - Web2024

If you haven’t heard the word “content marketing” around the office lately, you’ve most likely been on vacation. In the world of online business, content marketing is quickly becoming one of the most overused terms in the industry. Now there is no refuting that it is crucial, and I don’t want to take any power away from all that content marketing can do for a business, but there is another term just as important (if not more) that I don’t hear nearly as much. The term of which I am referring to is “Content Strategy.” But aren’t content marketing strategy and […] The post What’s the Difference?
