Could someone identify this please? My friend in Plano took these photos of a large canid near his house today. He wants to know if it's a coyote or a red wolf (which is indigenous to west Texas).

Looks like the coyotes we get around here.

I want to say coyote because that third photo seems to show a larger space between the ears, but I'm not familiar enough to tell. Also looks like it's got a case of mange. :-(

I would guess coyote based on the third picture, but I don't have much experience observing either species.

I think a wolf would look a bit wider around the neck where it meets the head.

It looks a lot more like a coyote to me, especially the way it is moving (with the head more down,) but I've only really got experience seeing coyotes around here.

It looks like a coyote. Wolves are generally taller, longer, and bulkier. Here's a picture of a red wolf I took a couple of years ago: https://m.facebook.com/photo...

I agree Coyote. Longer legged lighter in body than wolf.

Looks like a coyote to me, if not just a dog (it's hard to tell without seeing the muzzle clearly). According to your link red wolves are considered effectively extinct outside of captivity or designated breeding areas, which also makes it unlikely to be a red wolf (albeit not impossible).

Thanks everyone! I will let him know.
