Received an invite for a first communion ... gift event?
Oh, totally depends on the family. Ours, no. My best friend? Yes. - Jennifer Dittrich
Oh dear. I'm the 'family' and I have no clue, lol - Shannon - GlassMistress
Catholic or another denomination? - ellbeecee
Gotta be Catholic, right? I don't think there's a First Communion for anybody else. If so, the kid is like 2nd grade and will certainly hope for a small gift. - m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
I think some other denominations have first communions, but they're not as big a deal as for Catholics. - John (bird whisperer)
^ this. I'm Lutheran, we did first communion, but it was not the same as it was for my Catholic friends. It was a big deal for other friends in other churches. - Jennifer Dittrich
There were gifts from my parents and god parents, but it wasn't the sort of thing where it was expected of others. Or really very expected even from them. - Spidra Webster
That was my experience; I think the only gift I got was from my grandmother. - John (bird whisperer)
Kid is my cousin but I'm two years younger to his dad rather than being anywhere near his age, seven, I think. Unc converted when he married my aunt, who is Phillipino. I've no clue what may or may not be expected. - Shannon - GlassMistress
At mine I received a missal and a rosary. Maybe you already have a dove bead that can be put on a slim chain necklace? - Marie
I thought bead but wasn't sure what. He adores the movie Titanic, but I'm guessing religious would be more appropriate. - Shannon - GlassMistress
I broke down and just asked his mom ... waiting for a reply. - Shannon - GlassMistress
Yeah, as John & Jennifer both said, other denominations definitely do First Communion (I'm Lutheran and definitely had a First Communion - all the girls had to wear white dresses, and I had to dress up; the kidlet just did First Communion last year, but there were no fancy dress requirements). It's not a huge deal for most outside of Catholicism, though. Confirmation is a "gifting" event for a lot of denominations, but I don't think First Communion is outside of Catholicism. So, all of that to say, if it's a Catholic First Communion, a small gift/token is probably appropriate (maybe a handmade bead of a goblet or something), if it's any other type of First Communion, I'm sure a small gift/token would still be appreciated, but far from required. - COMPLICATED MR. She replied that a card and a prayer that he grow up "happy, responsible, and secure in himself" which I thought was sweet. I asked if non-religious gifts were ok and she said "Sure. Catholics are casual. We drink at Mass, remember?". I love my aunt - hee! - Shannon - GlassMistress
Aunt reports dinosaurs are his favorite animal ... does this crack anyone else up? - Shannon - GlassMistress
Hee hee, yep! - Heleninstitches #teamff
