- Cliff Gerrish
It was funny that I ran the Rackspace Cloud app on the iPad before our developer ever did :)
- Rob La Gesse
I ordered one - I missed the April 3rd pre-order date. My question though, is what use is this device when NOT connected to wifi (or 3G)?
- Kevin Costain
I think it's a connected device. The Network is the computer.
- Cliff Gerrish
I can't wait to get mine but waiting for the the 3g version at the end of the month.
- michael sean wright
Kevin - it is a book reader, music player, photo frame and hand-held game machine. NONE of those require you to be online.
- Rob La Gesse
Perhaps it's the day that computing started over.
- Cliff Gerrish
@Rob - that may be the ultimate future of the iPad, the best digital photo frame out there.. :)
- Kevin Costain
Cliff - Woz said that this is the great reboot.
- michael sean wright
I saw on TWIG earlier today that Google Wave on the iPad/Safari crashes the browser too..
- Kevin Costain
I brought a Newton with me to the Apple Store this morning - it got almost as much attention as the iPhone. I thought I could get a discount on a trade-in. No Joy. :)
- Rob La Gesse
Actually, I think the desktop will be replaced with the laptop, and the laptop will be replaced with the iPad.
- Cliff Gerrish
This pushes all developers to think higher, all manufacturers to throw away what they were going to do.
- michael sean wright
I do agree, that the iPad is going to show us new ways of doing things. I'm seeing that the touch keyboard is actually usable.. which is cool.. I would be able to charge with my pc tho (http://bit.ly/cy2WHg), that would suck..
- Kevin Costain
http://ff.im/iyVG1 "it's got these cool knobs on it"
- Brian Hendrickson
@Cliff - I don't think any form factor will actually "die"or be "replaced". It seems the iPad is creating a new form factor or use
- Kevin Costain
Right, Jobs has zeroed in on usability, with the user in mind. Why Microsoft didn't think bloating up the users experience, annoying them, would eventually drive people away, I don't know. Clearly Microsofts idea of winning in business was not innovation but simply somehow trying to lock people in.
- Stephen Pickering
Kevin, it's a matter of purchasing behavior. Eventually demand goes way down.
- Cliff Gerrish
One big takeaway from today, how happy people are today with a computer.
- michael sean wright
Dan is right - I've read more "papers" on my iPad today then I have even on my PC in a week. It is just so damned easy to pick it up and read. Especially if you are used to reading books.
- Rob La Gesse
With the wide array of patents that Apple currently have regarding this form factor and multi-touch , this is just the beginning. This thing is a hand held version of Microsoft Surface. Be ready to be blown away by the apps that are going to be developed.
- Jerry Schuman
@Cliff - for sure.. and the iPad is certainly going to signal a shift.. I've even heard of the death fo the "netbook" form factor.. its crazy.. many possible netbook buyers are certainly going to shift purchases - but netbooks aren't going to die..
- Kevin Costain
Yeah, but I saw where Leo was noticing that the NYtimes was better in the browser than it was on the App, and Jeff said the TIME app was just a PDF they were charging 4.95 for! But that's the media's problem, not Apples. In a few years there will be as many of these out there as Facebook users
- Stephen Pickering
@Jerry - from some of the things I've seen with iPhone apps - it's incredible. I totally expect that with the ipad..
- Kevin Costain
On the other hand, it's day one. The ecosystem will blossom from here.
- Cliff Gerrish
@Rob L - Have you visited http://www.time.com/time... yet on the iPad? Lots of rave reviews.
- michael sean wright
@MSW - am looking now - very nice!
- Rob La Gesse
Touch is definitely the future - the iPad should take the touch interface one (or more) steps into the future. Microsoft's surface should be here NOW, on a tablet pc to compete with this thing
- Kevin Costain
Kevin, getting stuff out of the lab and on to the streets is the challenge. Surface is great, but where is it?
- Cliff Gerrish
That's just bad ass
- Stephen Pickering
How long before touch screens and iPhone apps come to Mac laptops and desktops?
- Vezquex
Can I look into parallel universes like on Fringe? ;-)
- Jerry Schuman
@Cliff - surface is just in commercial locations right now.. seems like a research project at this point.. :)
- Kevin Costain
Jeff on Twig said the Time app was terrible, that it was just a PDF???
- Stephen Pickering
Desktop PCs with touch screen LCDs (from HP, for example) suck.. they don't get the point of touch at al..
- Kevin Costain
You have to give up the keyboard and mouse--- and start from there. Multi-touch isn't an add on.
- Cliff Gerrish
@Stephen - I saw that.. I didn't see him demo the app there - but that IS quite a lame move by TIME..
- Kevin Costain
Is the Time app Zinio?
- Francine Hardaway
Kevin, also I think he said they were charging 4 buck an issue? Like a newstand price??? hahahha
- Stephen Pickering
@Cliff - I totally agree - we have to be forced off the keyboard/mouse. And, really with the incredible power of an accelerometer - MS Surface is sooo far behind of the iPad..
- Kevin Costain
@Stephen - I'm quite sure Time is not going to see those selling very fast.. lol..
- Kevin Costain
The 4 bucks will work for comic books, but maybe not for Time.
- Cliff Gerrish
@Francine - the Time site is html5 and just perfect for iPad without an app. In particular - http://www.time.com/time...
- michael sean wright
for me the "killer" app will be seeing how VNC or some other remote desktop app looks - this would let me use the iPad as a remove viewscreen to my servers
- XMPP News
The marvel app is amazing that looks to be bringing a new way of reading comics.. very nice..
- Kevin Costain
why dont you give an overview of screws article for those who haven't read it - sometimes i think it's like a conference call between the 3-4 of you - not that you are trying to talk for the x number of listeners.
- Allen Stern
@XMPP - Logmein is supposedly working and available for the ipad.. I haven't seen it..
- Kevin Costain
Some people just want technology that does not need an engineering degree to run and keep running.
- David Damore
Allen: OK, we'll do that.
- Robert Scoble
thank you
- Allen Stern
@Scoble Check out the Air Hoceky on iPad - http://www.youtube.com/watch...
- Kevin Costain
There are some apps that don't work well, but Netflix makes up for everythigng
- Francine Hardaway
Francine!!
- Allen Stern
@Scobleizer, good retort to Doctorow here: iPad criticism is misplaced? http://j.mp/bVOqdK
- Alex Schleber
@Francine - I've heard great things about the netflix app on the ipad..
- Kevin Costain
I third the vote for Netflix - it is amazing on the iPad.
- Rob La Gesse
I am laying on my dog's bed typing away and watching a display of GG across the room
- Francine Hardaway
@Scobleizer are there any apps for ipad that use gamekit so you can connect the 2 ipads you have?
- dswabster
It'll be interesting to see how the little, medium and big screens will start to interact with each other.
- Cliff Gerrish
Both ed and I feel unchained today
- Francine Hardaway
What was telling for me today at BestBuy was how many non-geeks were standing in line. I have a picture of a 60 year old woman purchasing a 64GB and 16GB iPad. This is a major win for Apple. I talked with her at length about it and it completely was based on her previous experience with a iPod Touch and the fact she doesn't want to bother with all the problems she has with her computer.
- Jerry Schuman
Cory is right when it comes to the loss of generational sharing of comic 'books.' I also agree with him on the iTunes lock-down disappointment. But this is Apple's device to control, to drive you into iTunes - can we fault them? Android will benefit from the hype, grace of the iPad making a new market.
- michael sean wright
Or not.
- Francine Hardaway
Google and Apple both have succeeded through innovation, which is a big difference from the way some other businesses "earn" their money
- Stephen Pickering
What I view this as doing is that now the competition will see what is required for a successful tablet device - unlike the engineer-focused windows versions that have come out in past
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
I am taking this to dinner
- Francine Hardaway
@michael - perhaps Apple's downfall will ultimately be the backlash against all this lock-in.. it is possible users need to just become more sophisticated?
- Kevin Costain
Is it buying you dinner too?
- Cliff Gerrish
Users just need to have fun.
- Cliff Gerrish
I hope so!
- Francine Hardaway
Damn good point, Scobleizer, hadn't thought about it that way
- Stephen Pickering
Kindle app is good too
- Francine Hardaway
I am updating iTunes right now to turn on my magic pad!!
- Marshall Kirkpatrick
Sweet Marshall.
- Francine Hardaway
User Experience is the Killer App!
- Stephen Pickering
they're beautiful. just finished getting both of ours all sync'd up
- Karoli
Well-put, Robert! Insiders/experts vastly over-estimate the degree to which consumers want to immerse themselves into the details -> The Curse of Knowledge
- Alex Schleber
They're gonna sell a billion of these. It's unbelievable
- Stephen Pickering
is there a way that a gadget can come out without getting criticism from all angles
- dswabster
Karoli got 2??
- Francine Hardaway
Yeah, dswabster, by being Perfect!
- Stephen Pickering
@dswabster - never - but as long as it's constructive and not cynical - it's a good thing..
- Kevin Costain
Ok Scoble . Get some sleep
- Francine Hardaway
@Stephen, well put.
- Alex Schleber
mine did the same thing, Steve.
- Karoli
@Kevin - Apple moved beyond the 'insiders' there are plenty of people who are happy to be locked in. Agree with Scoble on the fuel injection analogy. But we must be careful not to let Apple become the only store on the block.
- michael sean wright
Thanks Alex, :-)
- Stephen Pickering
I'd love to give my 82 year Grama an Ipad and see how she likes it. .
- Kevin Costain
Michael, it's not up to us to keep Apple in check. It's up to Google and Microsoft. They can't lead, but maybe they can be fast followers (avoiding patents)
- Cliff Gerrish
Shit. Everybody want this for grandma. That means I have to give it up; I AM grandma
- Francine Hardaway
Right, Michael, without Android, Apple may not have had the incentive to push so hard on this, and to refresh the iPhone, which I'm assuming it will by June. Competition drives innovation
- Stephen Pickering
does brizzly work the same way?
- dswabster
robert, what are you pulling the stream in through?
- Karoli
Rob La Gesse is the greatest
- Stephen Pickering
As more sites/Web masters become familiar with Html5, most of the bitching about Flash will subside, same for the bitching about the apps: Safari is the wide-open door out of the Walled Garden, and the true Killer App...
- Alex Schleber
Haha, did Steve Gillmor just thank Steve Jobs? :) "I want to thank the Academy..."
- Alex Schleber
Thanks, Stephen *blush*
- Rob La Gesse
Great show. Thanks for sharing with your community.
- David Damore
Karoli: just using the Web browser.
- Robert Scoble
Cool show, guys. Now back to loading apps on my iPad :)
- Rob La Gesse
What A great sci fi day
- Francine Hardaway
Right, Alex, as long as there is a browser, it isn't closed, Leo Laporte mentioned that the Nytimes website was a gorgeous, even better experience than the NYT app
- Stephen Pickering
Great show..thanks for the talk guys and the chat all..
- Kevin Costain
wild...i couldn't get the video pulled via the browser. :(
- Karoli
Will Apple sell more than 7 million iPads this year?
- David Damore
Your welcome, Rob
- Stephen Pickering
David, I'd be willing to bet they easily do
- Stephen Pickering
Was with Leo in what i recall him saying in that it would selll 6million this year.
- David Damore
@Stephen yes, AND Apple know they've got to be a little careful about anti-trust, hence the move to allow in Kindle app/bookstore...they'll have to keep things reasonably open. Didn't even pre-install iBooks... which tells you a lot.
- Alex Schleber
They may sell as many as they can make.
- Cliff Gerrish
Business Week has a story referencing iSuppli with a figure of 7.1 million units in 2010.
- David Damore
Thx Robert & Gang...great show...off to the apple store...
- Alex Schleber
The kindle app was aleady on the iPhone. The coudnt just block an update to it that would make it work good on the ipad.
- Christian Burns
The Kindle is so dead.
- Robert Scoble
Kindle and every other e-book reader. People have wildly underestimated the impact of this device.
- Jerry Schuman
I'm getting ready to upload a pic of a 60+ year old grandma buying two iPads. Will write a short post about what was her reasoning for the purchase. If this is even slightly mimicked around the US it's a huge win for Apple.
- Jerry Schuman
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! *cries*
- Pam Gwenzi
what was the name of that world war II ipad app that edo segal demoed?
- bigg brotha
2 things that occurred to me today during the Gillmor Gang related chat that brought me back here to FF: 1) amazing that FF would still be the preferred/usable platform for this, doesn't say much for Buzz, does it? 2) There are a few things that really appear backwards now, after using a ton of DISQUS in recent weeks and months: FF always needed -> Comment threading, commenter avatars, and comment reply button. It's really disorienting/annoying to have to look at different spots all of the time for the commenter names.
- Alex Schleber
