Ditch The Dock To Speed Up Your Mac Workflow - http://www.makeuseof.com/tag...
For many Mac users, the legendary dock is sometimes obtrusive on a smaller screen laptop, or a little too distant on a 21″ screen iMac. Though it’s a staple feature on the Mac, it often lacks other extra functions users need to get tasks done. While the dock can’t be entirely eliminated, there are many powerful alternatives that can reduce your dependence on using the dock as an app launcher. Instead, there are tools for launching applications, opening files and automating tasks that take up less space on the desktop, and require less mouse and trackpad clicking. Siri Is Listening: Has iOS Privacy Been Blown Open? - http://www.makeuseof.com/tag...
Another week, another accusation of a major technology company spying on you. This week, it’s Apple’s turn, with the tech giant accused of recording everything – absolutely everything – you say to Siri, and passing it on to a third-party. The allegations were made in a Reddit post by someone who goes by the name of FallenMyst. The pseudonymous poster purports to be a recent employee of Walk N’Talk Technologies, where her job is to listen to audio recordings of people using Siri, and rate how closely they match computer generated transcriptions. The author claims to have heard everything from commands... Read the full article: Siri Is Listening: Has iOS Privacy Been Blown Open? - Web2024
10 Things to Consider Before Your Startup Acquires a Competitor - http://readwrite.com/2015...
Guest author Scott Gerber is founder of the Young Entrepreneur Council. Let’s face it: acquisitions are stressful. From audits and fine print to non-competes and company culture, there are many details to navigate before either making an acquisition or being acquired. Add your competitor into the mix, and things can get complicated. To make sure you’re making the right decision when you acquire a competitor, I asked 10 entrepreneurs from the Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC) what one piece of advice they would give an entrepreneur in this situation. Have A Narrowly Defined Non-Compete Provision We have helped with dozens of acquisitions, and one of the biggest issues is whether the seller will be prohibited from participating in competing ventures. If you are looking to acquire a competitor, pay particular attention not only to the duration and geographic scope of the non-compete restrictions, but also the definition of a "competing venture." The very last thing you want to do is to... - Web2024

Amazon And Microsoft Dominate The $20 Billion Cloud - http://readwrite.com/2015...
Cloud computing now totals nearly $20 billion, but not everyone shares equally in those cumulus riches. According to a new Synergy Research report, Amazon Web Services dominates the cloud with 28% of the overall market, with Microsoft Azure making gains but still commanding just 10% of the market. And while that AWS lead isn't as hefty as it once was, the cloud market clearly seems to be settling into the Haves, mainly comprised of AWS and Microsoft, and the Have Nots, which includes everyone else. A Big Market Getting Bigger For years we had to guess at how big the cloud was, given that Amazon, Microsoft, and others refused to break out cloud revenue. That is changing, and Synergy estimates that quarterly cloud infrastructure service revenues (which includes IaaS, PaaS, and private and hybrid cloud) is close to $5 billion, with trailing twelve-month revenues topping $16 billion. In terms of growth, 2014 saw cloud revenues rising 48% over 2013, with Amazon continuing to outpace the... - Web2024

How Delphi's Tech Will Drive Its First Coast-To-Coast Driverless Road Trip - http://readwrite.com/2015...
On Saturday at the South By Southwest conference in Austin, Delphi made history by announcing the first coast-to-coast automated drive. Dubbed the Delphi Drive, the trip will start in San Francisco on March 22 and end in New York City a few days later. To make the drive possible, the company rigged a 2015 Audi SQ5 with additional sensors and computers, all seamlessly tucked into the vehicle, and brought it to the C3 Connected Car Pavilion at SXSW for a static demo. I had the chance to experience the self-driving tech first hand. It’s a security myth that needs to die: if you have a Mac, you’re safe. It’s the biggest problem with web apps: they disappear. Desktop software is on your computer, meaning it keeps working long after the company that made it goes under or stops offering support. Web apps are totally different, as Google teaches us regularly by shutting down services people depend on. Last year the web giant shut down Google Reader, something millions of people (your correspondent included) used every day. Your Nosy Little Brother Will Love Yahoo’s “Secure” Disposable Passwords - http://readwrite.com/2015...
Yahoo just launched a new login process that does away with static passwords in favor of single-use versions sent to smartphones on the fly. The company says its new approach, which is similar to two-factor authentication, is designed to boost ease and security. When it comes to strangers, it just might. But it could also give anyone in your life—like roommates or family members—some souped-up snooping powers. See also: Meet Yahoo's Play To Help App Developers Make Loads Of Money Are Disposable Passwords More Secure? Instead of relying on a fixed password, Yahoo’s system sends a temporary access word or code on demand to your smartphone. This should bypass the use of easily guessable passwords or hard-to-memorize character soup like “K7jl3nwes0f.” The on-demand passwords are also disposable; once they're used, they won't work again. That should be comforting for the large swaths of people who ignore security experts and use the same login across multiple accounts. In other words,... - Web2024
Google to Devalue Doorway Pages in Search Results by @mattsouthern - http://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-...
In an effort to improve the overall quality of its search results, Google has announced that it will start to launch ranking adjustments for doorway pages in search results. Doorway pages are pages that exist for no other reason than to rank in search results. Some websites may create multiple doorway pages all ranking for the same term, which do not offer any unique value on their own because of the fact that the subject matter is similar, and they ultimately drive visitors back to the same place. Here’s how Google explains it: “For example, searchers might get a list […] The post Google to Devalue Doorway Pages in Search Results by @mattsouthern appeared first on Search Engine Journal. - Web2024

Earth To Lyft CEO: Lyft Line May Be A Success, But It's No Platform - http://readwrite.com/2015...
When San Francisco–based Lyft launched its Lyft Line service earlier this year, the company was fulfilling its original promise: to improve public transportation through carpooling. Now, six months later, Lyft Line comprises most of the company's rides in its home city—spurring CEO Logan Green to proclaim that the promise has morphed into a successful platform. According to Green, Line's success took off even before the company launched its $3 "Match MUNI" deal. But after the discount program, the carpooling service became the significant majority of rides. “We see Lyft Line as a platform we build on,” he said, during his South By Southwest keynote Monday. “The things we can do are really exciting.” When asked to name examples he referenced a new feature called driver destination, which allows Lyft drivers to tell the app where they’re headed. That way, they can do rides en route to work, home, or errands, without going too far out of their way. It’s a feature Lyft copied off Sidecar,... - Web2024

How Virtual Reality Could Revolutionize Journalism - http://readwrite.com/2015...
The man in the car next to me is on the phone with the police. Just beyond him on the grass, a teenager in a hoodie is moving erratically. He takes off and the man chases after him, despite the police urging him to sit tight. It is, of course, the story of Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman. In the three years since Martin's death, the #blacklivesmatter movement that sprung up in its wake has gone international and come to encompass many more unjust killings. It's a story with which Americans have become sadly familiar. But it was still jarring to be there at the moment of Martin's death. Inside a Samsung Gear virtual reality headset at the River VR startup accelerator SXSW expo, I watched grainy security camera footage of Martin buying Skittles and juice at a 7-Eleven. Then my perspective jumped to an animated recreation of Martin and Zimmerman's first encounter. After the two figures ran out of view, I was transported into the apartments of witnesses as real 911 audio played. I... - Web2024
Google Now’s Open API Plans Could Spell Trouble for Siri And Cortana - http://readwrite.com/2015...
Google personal digital assistant is about to get a whole lot more powerful. Google Now—which recommends websites, keeps track of reminders and appointments and acts as every Android-user’s personal digital butler—will soon provide developers with an open API, product director Aparna Chennapragada told an audience at SXSW on Saturday. Just about every kind of app would be able to communicate with Google Now to provide even more tailored notifications and recommendations to users. As a result, Google might leave competitors from Apple and Microsoft choking on its digital dust. User Activity To Guide Recommendations Chennapragada explained that Google Now’s predictive abilities have gotten much smarter since the service first launched in 2012. At first, the Google Now team simply guessed what notifications and apps would be most useful. But after extensively polling users and their activity, the team has refined Now’s recommendations. When Google offers the open API, however, there will... - Web2024
