"> I have never felt a need to post a link to chrome on reddit, so I wouldn't care that much But I did post a link to a legitimate tool and got downvoted to oblivion. We're all part of a bigger community than just this subreddit. And sometimes norms need to change. > especially if they take very little effort to do. What's easy isn't always what's right. > he's asking you to not do something based on legitimate practical concerns which you seem to have forgotten again. I care more about what's right. It's the principle here. Tolerating this establishes precedent & norms. Such a norm would be unacceptable. > I don't want the right to bar people from speaking from me I don't understand why you keep misrepresenting me despite repeated attempts to address it. I grow weary of this. I linked to a legitimate tool, analogous to a web browser, which can be used to obtain Worm from where Wildbow publishes it, like a web browser. "> I wouldn't think it was especially bad... links to chrome to not be posted I don't even... D: You may be ok with it but I don't think that would go over well. Or maybe you just hate Chrome that much? :P > Perhaps, but he's not doing that. He is. The script is not his content. It's abuse of copyright because of pulishers & distributers. > So this is what you see as giving up your rights? You are giving up your right for copyright holders to not make requests with no threat of legal action that you feel are threatening because there's an implied threat? Not sure I understand this. I mean it's not possible to make the request without the implied threat because one you have the attention of the copyright holder the risk of escalation is there. The very fact that he wants it taken down is a problem. He _wants_ to infringe on fair use because there's pressure from potential investors to do so. > And you are aiding it in a way that causes him harm, as we have established No. I'm aiding..." - Tanath

"> He's not trampling on fair use, he's asking people to take them down. This is where you're wrong. He's not asking for an ebook to be taken down here but a script to scrape it from where he published it. It's little different than using a web browser. > laws are not a shield from criticism or requests. Sigh. Would you say the same thing if he was asking for web browsers to be taken down? Sound absurd? It's not nearly as absurd as you'd think. > You could just abide by Wildbow's request No, because taking down legitimate programs is abuse of copyright and we need to stop tolerating it. DMCA is heavily abused for censorship like this (also unintended takedowns) and it's unethical. > Your right for me and Wildbow to not have freedom of speech... You keep implying that I'm infringing on free speech as if you're ignoring what I've been saying. I'm all for free speech. I never said anything remotely suggesting the request can't be made but it's pointless and unethical. A copyright holder..." - Tanath

"I've already explained I think that's not clear/certain. I acknowledge there was apparently a missed opportunity due to piracy (which this is not). You seem to refuse to acknowledge that fair use rights are more important. Trampling on fair use may benefit Wildbow, but it's a slippery slope. Do we continue to do so? If it's ok this time, why not again with others? Is it worth giving up our rights to benefit a select few? I would like to explicitly point out that I could have linked to a web browser and pointed out that you can save pages with it for offline viewing and while there's little difference I suspect we wouldn't be having the same conversation." - Tanath

"No, it's that I think fair use rights are more important. Business online needs to be done in a way that respects fair use. It's also not clear that it does lead to less success for Wildbow, or anyone else. There's no reason it can't or won't be done in a way that respects fair use. If they continue to trample fair use then they'll lose even harder in the long run when people are forced to continue file sharing illegally. Downloading what Wildbow has already freely published for personal use is not even p2p file sharing though. > It doesn't mean that investors can't make it their business. Clearly. They've made it very much their business. I mean that it's not their business ethically or legally. > You publishing his book online or giving out programs that make copies... To be clear I did neither. > It is likely to hurt Wildbow. Maybe, but giving up fair use hurts all of us. More than it hurts Wildbow. > You could, instead, just pirate privately. That's an oxymoron. > That doesn't..." - Tanath

"The only one harming Wildbow is Wildbow for not offering a competing version. Not sure investors backing out qualifies as harm, but if so then that's on the investors. If they don't want to invest because they don't like the legal climate that's their choice. They're inclined to wait and push things like SOPA & TPP, but that's a can of worms I'll avoid going into here. > finding out how easy it was to make such books. As such I and others would prefer if you kept it private. That's true of any fiction posted to Wordpress or other sites. Once it's online you should assume it's freely and easily available. If you don't then you don't know what you're doing. The fact that people have fair use rights is something that needs more publicity not less. > It is their business, because... I'm saying fair use is not their business. Are you saying Wildbow's wishes or potential investor's wishes trump fair use rights? In practice they have, but might doesn't make right. > you make it easier for..." - Tanath

"> You've already acknowledged your actions lead to Wildbow's failure. Woah, woah, woah. To be clear I have nothing to do with that. I acknowledge that _file sharing can_ be an issue for the 'big fish', but I'm clarifying that if they have an issue with the script, then tough. It's none of their business. You want to outlaw web browsers for the same reason? > You just don't care because... O_O > Wildbow failing is a predictable consequence of your actions Disagree. First, it's not my actions. Second, it's only predictable that someone _could_ have taken issue with any of these things, but apparently the one that was taken issue with was that someone was _selling_ an ebook version. That's different from redistributing for free or running the script (or using a web browser) for personal offline viewing. > It isn't a right for others to not criticize you, downvote you, challenge you, or for businesses to be obligated to support Wildbow's book. "I didn't realize standing up for people's rights came off as selfish. The fact that it seems to reduce the chances of "properly" being published is a problem with the industry in my opinion. Promoting their stance bay benefit Wildbow, and I'm all for that, but I don't want to do so at the expense of our rights. We have a right to fair use both legally and ethically. Choosing between supporting creators I like and rights is not a choice I want to make but if I have to I choose our rights. He's proven there's a market and that he can succeed independently to a degree already via donations. I'm not entirely convinced that he'd even make more money getting "properly" published in the long run. Likely sure, but it can be done. Is there a reason he _couldn't_ stay independent and still get movie deals and the like? I think that'd be more ideal." - Tanath
