Re: Source code in CMSes - http://scripting.com/2014...
"But does the CMS need to store the rendered text? I'm pretty sure Drupal w/ the Markdown module just stores the souce and does the conversion to renderable text when the content is loaded (in a node_load hook). There's some overhead obviously, but with the amount of caching Drupal does it's not a huge performance hit." - Sean Reiser

"Thank G-d I'm not the only one. 1. I also say Thank You as well when things do what their supposed to. 2. When things are taking longer then they're supposed to, I'll gesture towards the monitor with my hands and say "Voobaah!" as if I'm a stage magician and a magic gesture is needed to activate the magic. 3. When things are going ... poorly I'll often exclaim "Shrek!" (which predates the movies). I had no idea what meant at the time (it was meant as a watered down version of feces). I've been told by a developer I know that it's a curse in Armenian meaning roughly "fear". 4. The moment I figure out how to handle a tough task I'll say "Eureka". 5. I'll often narrate my though process "If I it passes this test, it sets this variable and foo will happen". This is disturbing when I'm at home since my partner always thinks I'm talking to her. 6. Most disturbing, when I'm booting / rebooting my laptop I'll gently stroke the side of my laptop waiting for it to be useable." - Sean Reiser

Re: Do Web Designers Actually Code? - http://chris.pirillo.com/do-web-...
"I hate disagree with the premise of the question, but most designers I know don't actually code at all. They create a design in Photoshop. A web developer converts that design into code. A professional web developer should be able to hand code a site. They may use CMSes and frameworks to speed development time, but they should be doing more then downloading an existing theme and customizing it a little. Keep in mind that one can code bespoke templates/themes for Wordpress, Drupal, Joomla, etc, so using one of those platforms isn't an indication that a developer isn't building something custom for you," - Sean Reiser

""By that logic, your employer can search your home without a warrant and inflict cruel and unusual punishment without due process, since they are not the gov't." Nope... by my logic my employer can search my locker in his facility, go through my desk, watch the traffic on his computer network and scan my work machine. They can say I can't wear shirts advertising their competitors while at work and they can say I'm not allowed to discuss divisive topics at work. Because that's in their property. On the other hand I believe that if you have a dinner guest who is verbally abusive to your spouse, you have every right to evict him from your home and not invite him back without worrying about his right to free speech. Because you have a right to a certain type of behavior on your property. An employer can't enter my property without my consent because it's my property. Of course an employer can't subject me to cruel or unusual punishment. There are laws outside the constitution governing..." - Sean Reiser

I have to right to get on a soapbox in a public park and discuss my views, I don't have a right to do it inside a mall. Re: The press isn't getting Heartbleed - http://scripting.com/2014...
"I have to tell you a quick story, Christina. Last week, I spent a night patching a number of clients' systems. One of them called me then next day accusing me of taking advantage of the exploit to make some money since the news said that, "If you don't change your passwords your SSNs might be stolen". So, he felt, "all we need to do is change passwords and since the system doesn't store SSNs there's no need for action". I sent him a number of articles setting him straight, but it left me to wonder if there are firms out there that haven't fixed things because a non-technical manager / CEO depriortized it based on a 3 minute report on the radio. IMHO, Users should be advised to check with their providers. If a site hasn't posted someplace what their heartbleed status is; users should email / tweet/ call them. Users should be advised not to use systems where the heartbleed status isn't clear. I agree that users can't fix this, but I feel they need to pressure website owners to get this..." - Sean Reiser
Re: Podcast: What the Fuck! - http://scripting.com/2014...
"The thing that has bothered me the most is mass media's coverage of heartbleed (or really lack of coverage). Most of the tech press have gotten it right, but when we look at more traditional media you get the following: 1) Change your passwords 2) Don't use you the same password on multiple sites. 3) Be careful, the government warns that malicious hackers are trying to use the bug (so change those passwords) They don't mention: 1) If the website hasn't fixed the vulnerability, changing your password don't do any good (actually it gives you a false sense of security) 2) That this bug reveals more then your password. It can give the attacker the keys to all of a site's encryption. 3) That everyone hasn't fixed the vulnerability. They don't seem to be calling out those who haven't announced their status. 4) That the NSA might have been aware of this vulnerability and been using it, instead of working to get it fixed. 5) Even if the NSA weren't aware they have years of traffic stored in..." - Sean Reiser

Re: Do 3rd party commenting systems (Disqus et al) support my community, or theirs? - http://davidherron.com/blog...
"When considering commenting systems there's always a balance between the easy of administration of these third party services and the value of your network. Here are some thoughts: 1) As a user I find that I'm more likely to comment on sites that use disqus / facebook comments /etc. If the site requires that I maintain yet another set of credentials, I'm less likely to comment on it. So, at least for people like me, 3rd party comments increases the community of your site. 2) As a drupal developer there's another thing to consider.... if you are using a third party commenting system you can cache your site more aggressively. Since all the users would be anonymous and the comments are being loaded via Javascript you can optimize the heck out of your site using tools like boost in order to serve your content with less server load. I have sites that cache older content for weeks. For sites that run in a constrained environment or who are likely to have traffic spikes this might make a..." - Sean Reiser
