really strong abstract expressionism combined with Nolde figurative painting -- there's a certain calmness behind the agitated surface oil. Peter Selz did an interview, published in her catalog called “New Images of Man and Woman.” - Adriano
Bored to Death :: truly under-rated binge candidate - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
wacky, black NYC comedy, great casting for Wes Anderson fans... "Bored to Death was an American comedy series that ran on HBO from September 20, 2009 to November 28, 2011. The show was created by author Jonathan Ames, and stars Jason Schwartzman as a fictional Jonathan Ames—a writer based in Brooklyn, New York City, who moonlights as an unlicensed private detective. The show also stars Ted Danson as George, and Zach Galifianakis as Ray, both friends of Jonathan." - Adriano

Buddhism :: A Comprehensive Manual of Abhidhamma . [Bhikkhu Bodhi, ed.] - http://holybooks.lichtenbergpr...
"Abhidhamma Pitaka is one of the divisions of the Pali Canon recognized by Theravada Buddhism as the authoritative recension of the Buddha’s teachings. This canon was compiled at the three great Buddhist councils held in India in the early centuries following the Buddha’s demise. The core of the present book is a medieval compendium of Buddhist philosophy entitled the Abhidhammattha Sangaha, ascribed to Acariya Anuruddha, a Buddhist savant about whom little is know. Despite this, his little manual has become one of the most important and influential textbooks of Theravada Buddhism." - Adriano

Alain de BOTTON :: The News, A User's Manual . [book review] - http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2014...
"Mr. de Botton defended his book’s grim attitude toward modern media “The news takes us to the edge of something deeply interesting – but then abandons us to the process Aristotle calls catharsis,” he said, referring to the way modern news lays out the facts but resists coming to any conclusions or exposing bias. “That explains the background anxiety that the news consistently creates.” The premise of his book, he said in introductory remarks, is that news occupies religion’s former place in society, an idea he borrows from Hegel." - Adriano
Political languages :: Merkel's tack with Putin - http://online.wsj.com/news...
"Ms. Merkel, who speaks Russian and grew up in East Germany, has long tried to balance a deep understanding of Russia's political interests and frustrations with a skeptical view of Mr. Putin's intentions. Her knowledge of Russia and her relationship with Mr. Putin, who speaks fluent German, thanks to his time as a KGB officer in Dresden, are now being put to their most serious test yet. In her calls with Mr. Putin, some lasting as long as an hour, the two leaders switch between German and Russian as the chancellor parries the president's lengthy statements of the official Kremlin line. Ms. Merkel and Mr. Putin often speak in German, a language Mr. Putin commands well -- but Ms. Merkel confided to Mr. Hollande over a January 2013 dinner that the Russian's "soft and low voice" when speaking in her mother tongue sometimes reminded her of a "man of the Stasi," the East German secret police." - Adriano

Machiavelli's letter to Vladimir Putin :: Congratulations. the Crimean caper was a masterpiece of smart power politics -- but there is just one problem - http://online.wsj.com/news...
"First, you calculated the "correlation of forces," to use a Soviet term, and realized that it was vastly in your favor. Who would fight you? A Ukrainian leadership in chaos? A flimsy Ukrainian army? The EU that could not even bomb Libya without the U.S. Air Force? Barack Obama's America? Then, you assessed political geography correctly. The rule is never to take on a superior enemy like the West on his own turf. You test his mettle on his periphery. The EU is an imposing economic power, but it lacks the will and the wherewithal to project its might. The U.S. has assets galore but no longer the will to act as world power. So you could shrug them off. Next, you factor in geography proper. Globally, the West is far superior to Russia, but regionally, you were the Man. You had the "interior lines," as the great Prussian strategist Carl von Clausewitz put it; the West was a thousand miles away. And your troops were already in place in Crimea—tanks, planes and all." - Adriano
"You Russians have distilled my wisdom into a pithy phrase: Kto kovo—who dominates whom? [T]his is why you won so handily in Crimea. There is just one problem, Mr. President. A nation's true greatness comes from responsibility. You have just reaffirmed a historic Russian habit: You would rather be the great spoiler and outsider. It is self-isolation, but not at all splendid. Good luck, Vladimir. Yours truly, Niccolo Machiavelli" [aka Josef Joffe, editor of Die Zeit in Hamburg] - Adriano

A Late Quartet (2012) :: RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman 2014 - http://www.youtube.com/watch...
"On the eve of an important concert, Peter (Christopher Walken), lead cellist of a veteran string quartet, receives some very disturbing news. When he announces his pending retirement, competing egos and uncontrollable passions threaten to derail years of friendship and collaboration within the tightly knit group." Hoffman plays second violin in this wonderful homage to Beethoven's String Quartet, Op. 131 filled with anecdotes from Julliard, even Pablo Casals and T.S. Eliot. - Adriano
Jean d'ORMESSON :: un entretien formidable (2012) . [mp3, 34-min]
- Adriano

Arnold Böcklin :: Die Toteninsel (1883, Isle of the Dead) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
"Vladimir Nabokov observed in his novel _Despair_ that prints of this work were to be "found in every Berlin home." Many observers have interpreted the oarsman as representing the boatman Charon who conducted souls to the underworld in Greek mythology. The water would then be either the River Styx or the River Acheron and his white-clad passenger a recently deceased soul transiting to the afterlife. Greek island Pontikonisi, near Corfu, was likely the inspiration for the painting." - Adriano

R.A.E. Coningham et al. :: The earliest Buddhist shrine: excavating the birthplace of the BUDDHA at Lumbini, Nepal . [Antiquity (2013) 87:338:1104-1123, PDF] - https://docs.google.com/viewer...
Archaeologists have uncovered evidence of a structure at the birthplace of the Buddha dating to the 6th century B.C. This is the first archaeological finding which dates the life of the Buddha to a specific century. \\ "Dates of the sixth century BC lend support to the longer chronology and not the shorter chronology in the vicinity of 480 BC favoured by a number of prominent textual scholars like Heinz Bechert. It is important to note, however, that such assertions require further analysis and excavation, not only at Lumbini, but also at the three other sites identified by the Buddha as places for pilgrimage." - Adriano
Lumbini is one of the key sites associated with the life of the Buddha [birthplace]; others are Bodh Gaya, where he became a Buddha or enlightened one; Sarnath, where he first preached; and Kusinagara, where he passed away. At his passing at the age of 80, the Buddha is recorded as having recommended that all Buddhists visit "Lumbini." \\ See map in Figure 1 ibid. - Adriano

Linguistics :: The Great Language Game - http://greatlanguagegame.com/
"Lars Yencken, a machine learning researcher and language aficionado, recently created a game to test people’s skills at deciphering just a fraction of the 6,500 languages that exist today. The Great Language Game was built from audio samples taken from news podcasts in 78 different languages. Users are also encouraged to submit audio of languages they left out. Based on the game’s test results, French is the easiest language to identify, while South Efate is the hardest. When the game ends, players receive a handy summary of which languages they missed, along with information about what makes each of those languages unique." - Adriano
Cormac McCARTHY :: Jefe advises The Counselor (2013) - http://rsvp360.blogspot.com/2013...
The standard criticism of Ridley Scott's film is that normal characters do not talk as do in The Counselor. Indeed the dialogue is almost Shakespearean, for example, the telephone conversation between the Counselor and Jefe. There is also the sense of inevitable tragedy in the sense of Greek theatre. Here is my favorite excerpt from Cormac McCarthy's screenplay (which does summarize the moral content of the film)... JEFE: "The world in which you seek to undo your mistakes is not the world in which they were made. You are at a cross in the road and here you think to choose. But here there is no choosing. There is only accepting. The choosing was done long ago." - Adriano
So what about our choices into the future? Here the Diamond Dealer (played by Bruno Ganz) informs The Counselor as follows: "At our noblest, we announce to the darkness that we will not be diminished by the brevity of our lives." ... yea, all which it inherit shall dissolve, and like this insubstantial pageant faded, leave not a rack behind. The baseless fabric of our revels shall inevitably unravel in ways totally unforeseen. - Adriano
