R.A.E. Coningham et al. :: The earliest Buddhist shrine: excavating the birthplace of the BUDDHA at Lumbini, Nepal . [Antiquity (2013) 87:338:1104-1123, PDF] - https://docs.google.com/viewer...
Archaeologists have uncovered evidence of a structure at the birthplace of the Buddha dating to the 6th century B.C. This is the first archaeological finding which dates the life of the Buddha to a specific century. \\ "Dates of the sixth century BC lend support to the longer chronology and not the shorter chronology in the vicinity of 480 BC favoured by a number of prominent textual scholars like Heinz Bechert. It is important to note, however, that such assertions require further analysis and excavation, not only at Lumbini, but also at the three other sites identified by the Buddha as places for pilgrimage."

Lumbini is one of the key sites associated with the life of the Buddha [birthplace]; others are Bodh Gaya, where he became a Buddha or enlightened one; Sarnath, where he first preached; and Kusinagara, where he passed away. At his passing at the age of 80, the Buddha is recorded as having recommended that all Buddhists visit "Lumbini." \\ See map in Figure 1 ibid.
