Re: The £419 Surface 3: it's nice ...but it's still going to bomb - http://www.pcpro.co.uk/tablets...
"But what's the battery life like on that old Asus? And my guess would be that the latest Atom probably matches that three year old i3 - we'll see when Microsoft sends us one to benchmark..." - Ian Betteridge
Re: The £419 Surface 3: it's nice ...but it's still going to bomb - http://www.pcpro.co.uk/tablets...
"Nooo... much as I love Chromebooks, a Chromebook is a very different beast. Reading, playing games, and other tasks which work really nicely on a tablet are pretty second rate on a Chromebook." - Ian Betteridge
Re: Counterpoint: The £419 Surface 3 - it’s nice…and it’s going to be a hit - http://www.pcpro.co.uk/tablets...
"Well, the ThinkPad Tablet 2 is (according to Lenovo) no longer available, although you'll see some stocks being cleared by resellers - hence the price. The cheapest ones have 32Gb drives, and a much slower Atom, so I certainly wouldn't recommend it over the Surface 3." - Ian Betteridge
Re: Counterpoint: The £419 Surface 3 - it’s nice…and it’s going to be a hit - http://www.pcpro.co.uk/tablets...
"To be fair, the Surface 3 doesn't have one either, unless you pay extra for it." - Ian Betteridge
Re: The £419 Surface 3: it's nice ...but it's still going to bomb - http://www.pcpro.co.uk/tablets...
"Obviously, I haven't seen it yet (come on Microsoft, where's that review sample?) but judging from the experience of a Surface Pro 3, I can see a well-made, well-designed smaller device in the same vein doing well against other Windows competitors. It certainly looks better than other 10in-ish convertibles." - Ian Betteridge
Re: The £419 Surface 3: it's nice ...but it's still going to bomb - http://www.pcpro.co.uk/tablets...
"This is actually a really good point. As I've found from my experience with a Surface Pro 3, Windows apps tend to suck badly with hi-res screens. Unless they're Metro apps, of course..." - Ian Betteridge
Re: The £419 Surface 3: it's nice ...but it's still going to bomb - http://www.pcpro.co.uk/tablets...
"Personally (as you'll see from my post - coming shortly!) I think it's aimed squarely at the iPad, and I can actually see it doing well. I don't think it will overtake the iPad, which has too much traction, but it makes a decent "second"/casual computer, which is what a lot of people have bought iPads for." - Ian Betteridge

"I really hope they bring back the option to have swiping in from the right display the Charms again. This is one of my favourite Windows 8 features on tablet, and I use it many times a day. A hamburger menu is a real step backwards." - Ian Betteridge

Re: The 15 best smartphones of 2014: what"s the best phone in the world today? - http://www.pcpro.co.uk/feature...
"I don't think you can ignore the price when looking at the best phones. In some cases, the previous version, with a greatly reduced price, represents much better value than a new one." - Ian Betteridge
Re: Prosecutors Trace $13.4 Million in Bitcoins From the Silk Road to Ulbricht’s Laptop - http://www.wired.com/2015...
"Did reading comprehension go down while I was asleep? The author isn't saying Bitcoin was magically anonymous - he's saying people BELIEVED that. And they did. Try talking to a wider group of people and you'll hear them talking about how Bitcoin is untraceable." - Ian Betteridge
Re: Prosecutors Trace $13.4 Million in Bitcoins From the Silk Road to Ulbricht’s Laptop - http://www.wired.com/2015...
"Not sure how a technology can, itself, "pretend" anything given that it's not conscious. However, to your wider point: yes, many Bitcoin boosters did talk about its ability to make transactions untraceable, without caveating that to say "as long as you take a lot of other precautions". The author of this article is correct to point out that if you believed that, as many people did, this case should be a wake-up call." - Ian Betteridge

Re: Bath's Kyle Eastmond: I owe everything to my mum - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport...
"Silly comment. No one's saying Eastmond is better than Sonny Bill. But in the Autumn International, Eastmond didn't put a foot wrong against him and SB got nothing through Eastmond. So the point is that just because he's small doesn't mean he can't defend against the best bigger men." - Ian Betteridge

"He did pretty well against Sonny Bill Williams, giving away five stone." - Ian Betteridge
Re: Change the rules to stop scourge of negative rugby - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport...
"I think you're missing the point of Austin's article a bit. What he says - and he's right about this - is that in the northern hemisphere defensive play has advanced far more quickly than attacking play. Defences are so well organised amongst the top teams that it's very very hard to break down. I think he's right about that. Having said that, where I think he's wrong (as you say) is in judging how much of a spectacle it is. I was at the game (I'm a Quins fan), and it was far from the dull defensive affair he makes it out to be - it was close, gripping, with a lot of possession for Quins but Saints always looking very very dangerous on the break. The stats make it look like a dull game, but it wasn't at all." - Ian Betteridge

Re: How to stop Microsoft Word changing your spellcheck language - http://www.pcpro.co.uk/realwor...
"Hmmm. In theory, that's what it *should* do - you should be able to add the keyboard (Polish) to the language (English) and Office should respect that. I'm not on my Windows setup at the moment - will give it a try later and see if I can figure it out." - Ian Betteridge
Re: Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact review - http://www.pcpro.co.uk/tablets...
"The original iPad Air is £319, as is the newer iPad mini 3. It's the Air 2 which is £399. The Xperia is excellent, as Jon says, but you're paying a premium for it." - Ian Betteridge

Re: Microsoft Surface Pro 3 review - http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews...
"No, it's correct: The pen on the Surface Pro 2 latched into the power socket on the side and was secured using magnets. On the SP3, it doesn't attach to the power socket, but does still cling to the side if you place it there." - Ian Betteridge
Re: Apple iPad Air 2 review - http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews...
"Hmm. A five star review which says the Air 2 is "definitively the best tablet on the market right now" and you're complaining that it's biased against Apple?" - Ian Betteridge

Re: All change on PC Pro... tell us what you think - http://www.pcpro.co.uk/web-dev...
"The old CMS was actually an unholy mishmash of two systems: one completely custom, and a bolted-on Wordpress install (the reasons for doing it that way are lost in the mists of time). It wasn't pretty, and it was also essentially unsupported. Moving to the new CMS means we're running on the same as almost all of Dennis' sites, including the likes of Auto Express, Evo, Men's Fitness etc. This means not only does PC Pro have a properly supported platform (with a big, in-house development/design team behind it) but features we develop for one site can easily be deployed across of all of them. So although the CMS change might not sound a big deal, it definitely will be in the future." - Ian Betteridge

Re: All change on PC Pro... tell us what you think - http://www.pcpro.co.uk/web-dev...
"We're mourning the passing of the old CMS, which has been despatched to the great code repository in the sky :) Seriously though - we're starting on a full redesign shortly. The aim of this change was mostly to shift to the new back-end. The front end is the next step." - Ian Betteridge

Re: All change on PC Pro... tell us what you think - http://www.pcpro.co.uk/web-dev...
"Noooooo! We're not stopping looking at SSDs. But in order to keep an A List properly up to date to the standards we want to keep, you need to do more than check them - you need to thoroughly test everything on the market. That's not an insubstantial task." - Ian Betteridge
