I'm hanging out waiting for the call. Today? I think I'll talk about Secret.
- Robert Scoble
Hanging out here too. Anyone seen the movie "it Might Get Loud"?
- John Taschek
Robert: Given you area keynote at Macworld, I guess this means Apple has something you will find interesting and contextual
- Michael Roberts
I think Robert should talk about GoPro and the evolution of image capture
- John Taschek
Michael: Apple is ahead in low energy bluetooth beacons.
- Robert Scoble
Who cares about the misdirection Apple sets up in order to have a kick ass keynote?
- John Taschek
sounds and looks great
- Jerome Hughes
my name is Sue, how do you do?
- Jerome Hughes
enlightenment, don't know what it is
- Jerome Hughes
Oh - thought I was on the show today... have a great one!

RE: Twitter, is their redesign desktop only? Seems like the mobile apps are more or less the same...
- J.C. Bouvier
People have a hard time figuring out that they have to follow people on Twitter rather than tweet
- Francine Hardaway
it makes the desktop more like mobile
- Kevin Marks
everyone has friends. not everyone wants to follow news and celebs. I suppose some people just follow friends on Twitter
- Matt Terenzio
Apparently a lot of potential new Users can't understand the Twitter UI
- Moe Glitz
Tiwtter UI gets harder and harder to grok
- Francine Hardaway
ketih just daleked
- Kevin Marks
let's just get a screenshot of the original website and create a client that looks just like it
- Matt Terenzio
came back agin
- Kevin Marks
Great idea Matt Terenzio if they would let you create clients anymore
- Francine Hardaway
not everyone wants to find new people who they share interests with, as their interests are very mainstream
- Jerome Hughes
So Facebook the Album is now releasing singles. Paper is their latest new release
- Moe Glitz
Teens come and go.
- Francine Hardaway
Shouldn't that little bird be Twitter
- Moe Glitz
teens grow up become the target demo for the advertising
- Jerome Hughes
could be one of the birds around me
- Kevin Marks
to become
- Jerome Hughes
Jerome, the things they do now will not be what they do later when they have $$
- Francine Hardaway
I have holes in my audio coming in.
- Kevin Marks
what about Foursquare and Microsoft?
- Tina Chase Gillmor
agree, Francine, and much of their importance is that they'll be in that demo before too long
- Jerome Hughes
and they hold keys to their parents' $$ in the meantime
- Jerome Hughes
and with snapchat there is no "drama" due to others not being able to see it
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Interesting investment - http://adage.com/article...

- Tina Chase Gillmor
Sometimes I don't want to talk to anyone. That's what Medium's for
- Francine Hardaway
Tina: and no likes and no comments. So far less chance of drama. And, if you post something stupid, like you naked and drunk, it doesn't stick around for years.
- Robert Scoble
right that's what i mean. The opportunity for insight and interpretation is different
- Tina Chase Gillmor
encoder crashed
- Kevin Marks
Technical difficulties. We will be back.

- Scott Jordan
In this Messaging War, Apple & Google are the winners. Whatever Messaging App will use, it's either from an iPhone or an Android Phone.

- Kevin Marks
anyone watching sochi? not getting the sense the olympics has let to anything innovative in terms of how to access the games.
- Michael Roberts
I'm on an ipad
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Very cool weather pattern Kevin.
- manielse (Mark Nielsen)
I missed the beginning. What did you guys talk about already? Any rants yet?
- Ludwig Ederle
Michael: I watched a bit last night. The Olympics are all about corporate boondoggle. I went to Vancouver and London and saw this first hand.
- Robert Scoble
Here we come
- Steve Gillmor
Absolutely not interested in the Olympics beyond the dogs. Robert, I'm in your corner.
- Francine Hardaway
The Olympics will always lag -- it is a very big committee run by old people.
- Robert Scoble
This time it's also about the Russian superpower
- Ludwig Ederle
Pineapple express hits Gillmor Gang
- clive boulton
Watched the Snowboard Slopestyle, very good, your guy (US) won
- Scott Jordan
Waiting for the machines to come back online
- Tina Chase Gillmor
anybody beeing able to see or hear anything ?
- flyinthesoup
I guess storm related
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Robert your no spring chicken :-)
- Scott Jordan
Coming back on
- Tina Chase Gillmor
The competitors don't even live in the countries they represent
- Francine Hardaway
just hopped on ... tell me when to hit refresh
- Laura Norvig
Hello
- Ian Waring
I'm getting the sense this is some kind of media blackout surrounding the games aside from the official feed. I would also agree with Robert - and for me the games feel almost too well scripted esp. the commentary.
- Michael Roberts
Final Score Scotland 0 England 20, ok you can start now :-)
- Scott Jordan
Just saw Her yesterday. Liked it. Want to hear my brother's take on it. He's been quoted in two articles about it, even though he hasn't seen it yet.
- Laura Norvig
watching it same way as rest of old media - social media tells what happens that might matter to me, keeps from having to see most all of the the corporate blather
- Jerome Hughes
Talk amongst yourselves for a minute ;-)
- Tina Chase Gillmor
The Man stood on the burning deck...
- Ian Waring
Need to split, forgive me if I missed the memo, will this be the time of the show going forward?
- J.C. Bouvier
Waiting. Waiting. Waiting.
- Robert Scoble
Funny that Gates and the new CEO had a bash at spending a day trying to install Windows 8.1
- Ian Waring
heh. I suspect Peter will be squeamish about falling in love with your AI. Kurzweil would be all over it.
- Kevin Marks
JC: No, usually on Friday at 1 p.m.
- Robert Scoble
There is hope for Microsofts future
- Ian Waring
Ian: If I were Gates I wouldn't even try. He should focus 100% of his efforts on mobile.
- Robert Scoble
that was a parody, Ian
- Kevin Marks
KK, Tx Robert, have a nice weekend all...
- J.C. Bouvier
Laura, have you read "The Circle" then? haven't yet seen "Her" and guessing those who find one of these of interest may also enjoy the other
- Jerome Hughes
Kevin: ahh, I figured. I didn't even like that post when it came by the stream.
- Robert Scoble
Microsoft's future is probably another Companies past
- Moe Glitz
It's the old Ken Olsen trick. Get all the VPs in a Woods Meeting, send them a VAX to assemble
- Ian Waring
I watched 'Her' two days ago. Since I listen to Gillmor Gang every week.. its really didn't seem that far fetched at all.
- Michael Roberts
Jerome, no, I'll check it out. One of my thoughts during Her was that the AI didn't *really* have her own personality, it was just his narcissism that made it seem so. But OTOH, what would a human know about AI personality?
- Laura Norvig
Did you all read this from Siri's founder about Her? http://variety.com/2014... He says it isn't gonna happen anytime soon.
- Robert Scoble
Power in our area is up and down.
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Send money to Enron!
- Ian Waring
We can't maintain the broadcast
- Tina Chase Gillmor
The Circle was weak IMO - cardboard characters and weak plotting
- Kevin Marks
Just as we get it all back on it goes off again
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Lots and lots of wind here
- Tina Chase Gillmor
I agree Kevin, but the idea behind the book was interesting.
- Scott Jordan
See you all next time
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Not happening?
- Keith Teare
Robert, that starts with a bunch of Hollywood hubris 'Hollywood has always shown the way to the future. It’s a little known fact that, for decades, the bigscreen inspired many forward-looking technologies long before their day.' - Hollywood shows it after science fiction writers write about it
- Jerome Hughes
aaron swartz's unfinished novel about an evil google was much funnier
- Kevin Marks
Not happening
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Bye folks, till next time
- Scott Jordan
California is being hit by a series of atmospheric rivers--currents of large amounts of moisture streaming out of the subtropics.
- clive boulton
what does this say about the future of live streaming - generators?
- Charles Carrico
bye all. next one Friday or Saturday?
- Laura Norvig
that was the animation I sent, clive
- Kevin Marks
Kevin, agree about 'The Circle' and still found the ground it covered to be interesting
- Jerome Hughes
Sorry everyone. Acts of nature
- Tina Chase Gillmor
np, thanks, Tina, next on agenda - natural gas generation failover? :D
- Jerome Hughes
Thanks to everyone for being here. Thanks to Robert Scoble, Keith Teare and Kevin Marks
- Tina Chase Gillmor
global change = acts of evil against nature
- Charles Carrico
Kevin, that swartz piece sounds awesome - online?
- Laura Norvig
Jerome... Perhaps
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Bummer. You wanna try agin tomorrow?
- Robert Scoble
Yes lets
- Steve Gillmor
Yes Robert. Let's do that
- Tina Chase Gillmor
re: Her and Siri. agree in that sense.. but I think the augmented reality.. eventually with more sophisticated voices won't be long.. how long before someone falls in love with a their computer.. might be a while.
- Michael Roberts
Email us when it'll be on.
- Robert Scoble
Steve will call you on availability time
- Tina Chase Gillmor
don't forget to notify the public on Facebook or upstream comment
- Charles Carrico
we'll watch for the bat signal!
- Jerome Hughes
thanks, Kevin
- Jerome Hughes
thx!
- Laura Norvig
this chat room is one fantastic filter
- Jerome Hughes
Watching a cool talk of Peter's from NASA event last week - starts around 20 min in http://recode.net/2014...

Thanks, Laura.
- clive boulton
looks interesting, thanks
- Jerome Hughes
Robert spoke on Wednesday at GDG Silicon Valley, any recording? http://gdgsv.blogspot.com/2014...
- clive boulton
Age of context. GG interrupted by Pineapple express.
- clive boulton
We'll resume at 10am pt today
- Steve Gillmor

- Keith Teare

"The web isn't *the* platform anymore. iOS and Android are." I'd argue that the web is still a pretty platform - where are we watching this again?
- Ben Werdmuller
The best Social Network on Mobile is the iPhone. There's an App for everything
- Moe Glitz
ooh, I love how Keith says Malasia
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Sometimes, a half-hearted effort you create gains the type of traction no one expects and exceeds your initial willingness to support it.
- Chien-Yu Lin
I agree with Keith... ios and android are the platforms.. except they are run by companies now..
- Michael Roberts
The App Store is the new Ed Sullivan Show
- Moe Glitz
isn't this like ie6 when they tried to control the web?
- Michael Roberts
my kids loves it. Me I cant do it
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Flappy Birds is about touch and technique.
- Chien-Yu Lin
It is palm-sized golf.
- Chien-Yu Lin
Milk and two sugars please Kevin
- Moe Glitz
Secret
- Ben Werdmuller
this is chilled green tea, Moe. You don't want milk an sugar in it
- Kevin Marks
There is now a Snapchat for Business Folks
- Moe Glitz
I'm sweet enough!
- Moe Glitz
it was popular before they invoked the false scarcity
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Kevin, I've seen it done ... :/
- Ben Werdmuller
Tina: right. But now he took something popular and put it in the stratosphere and got EVERYONE to notice it.
- Robert Scoble
For sports, Bill Veeck of the Chicago White Sox would give tickets away when his teams were good. His rationale was that it created more buzz and would sustain the team's desirability in times when the Pale Hose were bad. This is a common marketing application and is outlined in "Veeck as in Wreck".
- Chien-Yu Lin
Hi s name is Dong Nguyen @dongatory
- Scott Jordan
Veeck was there to plant ivy in Wrigley, brought in Eddie Gaddell, promoted Disco Demolition, and started what we know as modern sports marketing.
- Chien-Yu Lin
In the wine business - Château d'Yquem one year didn't like their wine - so they simply didn't release any at all. One of the most expensive white wines you can buy.
- Michael Roberts
Michael: exactly.
- Robert Scoble
Thinking out of the Walled Gardens
- Moe Glitz
flappy bird took off via twitter: http://marketingland.com/viral-r...
- Kevin Marks
Keith: totally agree, and they also dominate the platforms? its means ios, android call the shots..
- Michael Roberts
Dong Ngyuen says he still makes games https://twitter.com/dongato...
- Kevin Marks
Is the quality of start-ups being plateau'ed by the limitation of mobile devices?
- Chien-Yu Lin
the app store is the new tower records; twitter is the new ed sullivan
- Kevin Marks
Kevin: agree.. and its years to break that model.. so how do you make an app store not controlled by 'tower records'
- Michael Roberts
The App Store is now the Hit Parade for the Smartphone Generation
- Moe Glitz
Chien-Yu - I don't think so. Its the lack of big ideas and funding for them.
- Keith Teare
is Microsoft "getting it" with their investment in Foursquare?
- Tina Chase Gillmor
foursquare's database of small businesses is the best available
- Kevin Marks
Location is still an open game. No clear winners yet
- Moe Glitz
will apple announce tools for ibeacons at macworld? a brilliant play by apple.
- Michael Roberts
Keith: "Big Stuff" = Agree (the big "backbones" have been created; now it is the majors buying niche features, patents and personnel). "Little Stuff" = A developer is bound by GPS, accelerometer, speaker, wifi.
- Chien-Yu Lin
are iBeacons any different to QCodes? Except I can't put a QCode on my forehead, and get it scanned by walkers by.
- Simon Benvenutto
Keith: Little Stuff example - what could the fitness industry do with a Square-sized and -weighted gas analyzer? Galvanic skin response measurement device?
- Chien-Yu Lin
BLE seems to be the biggest business opportunity no one knows about.
- Michael Roberts
Location needs a new layer that's between websites and Apps?
- Moe Glitz
Steve: They do use pseudo-iBeacons for things like anti-theft devices for large, expensive construction equipment (jackhammer, hammer drill).
- Chien-Yu Lin
show link http://techcrunch.com/2014...
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Keith: Also, do you think we are now at a point where the Big Ideas require legislation - and that's something maybe people do not want to get into?
- Chien-Yu Lin
Legislation always comes later - after deployment
- Keith Teare
BLE seems to me, to be the entry point to create more NEST like tools that take the connected world to new places.. this I think is the very exciting... and it connects the makr world finally to everything else that is happening. Imagine collaborative consumption opportunities as well.
- Michael Roberts
like with Bitcoin
- Keith Teare
microsoft want to know where we are
- Tina Chase Gillmor
yes for Bing
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Keith: Agree - but the difference of the "hard problem" between Uber (license) and say a company that is developing medical transparency is infinitely different.
- Chien-Yu Lin
Was it a Ballmer Deal? Think not
- Moe Glitz
Wondering, that Foursquare is still around ...
- Johannes Siemers
Yes - medical a special case. Avoid it unless you have years to kill getting approvals
- Keith Teare
The Bing team working on something, has pulled in engineers from Windows, and SQL server.
- clive boulton
Robert: Are you excited about Apple again? Can we expect some developments this year.. Medical.. Iwatch.. TV (finally)..
- Michael Roberts
Google Maps, Google Local, Waze. Google is everywhere and nowhere in Location
- Moe Glitz
Michael: I'm optimistic but this year will really define Apple in the post-Jobs era. Not sure they will hit it out of the park, but the opportunity is there.
- Robert Scoble
we need to talk to Dennis Crowley again
- Tina Chase Gillmor
microsoft buying into foursquare: http://www.nytimes.com/2007...
- Kevin Marks
Johannes: lots of people are still using Foursquare.
- Robert Scoble
Keith: ... but that's the issue: the un-tackled Big Ideas have that legislation requirement up front.
- Chien-Yu Lin
i still use foursquare to check in occasionally
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Foursquare was more of a game than a game changer
- Moe Glitz
Moe: totally disagree.
- Robert Scoble
Yahoo to partner with Yelp on local search engine results - WSJ
- Scott Jordan
Keith: Is iBeacons proprietary.. Does that matter? When you say iBeacons.. does it = BLE in general? ie.. any device can take advantage of that ping?
- Michael Roberts
Microsoft Bing team working off campus by Bellevue transit center with younger social engineers
- clive boulton
Would love to see the statistics of Foursquare users and non-users for home burglaries incurred.
- Chien-Yu Lin
ibeacons is a software approach to using BLE. It isn't proprietary. Anybody can implement
- Keith Teare
They still haven't cracked Location, Robert, even though they owned the check-in brand
- Moe Glitz
Michael: Bluetooth Low Energy beacons are open. Android will get them (transmit, it already has receive) this year.
- Robert Scoble
Moe: really? Everywhere I use Foursquare has the best details I've seen.
- Robert Scoble
am getting "you're near here, want to check in?" type notifications from 4sq now
- Jerome Hughes
Could Foursquare be essentially location-based Groupon?
- Chien-Yu Lin
Recode reports Marissa Mayer signed Yelp deal for local search
- clive boulton
Great... so does any of the gang feel that Android, IOS dominance of the platform matters.. To me it feels strange.. we have a web that is open finally.. but mobile seems very closed.. there is no open in mobile.. does that matter at all?
- Michael Roberts
Android is pretty open; iOS isn't too bad, bitcoin app rejection notwithstanding, and both still support the web
- Kevin Marks
Michael - I think it doesn't matter so long as anybody can put any app (legal at least) into any app store, worldwide
- Keith Teare
Yelp's problem is that Yahoo has done a deal with them
- Moe Glitz
people not wanting to change is why we have Paper instead of changes to "original Facebook"
- Jerome Hughes
Yelps long tail seems really stale, reviews 2 , 4, or more years old
- clive boulton
Foursquare's original Gaming business model sucked
- Moe Glitz
robert... what did you say to us?
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Kevin: How is Android open? I just chatted with Mark Surman at Mozilla.. They are pitching a new Mozilla OS..recognizing that are up against some very smart people.. but don't feel either the Android or IOS app stores are open.. ME personally I'm an IOS user but it made me think as we more towards mobile.
- Michael Roberts
Moe, it got them to where they are
- Jerome Hughes
robert you cant hear well can you?
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Tina: I'm going to reboot. Call me back in three minutes.
- Robert Scoble
Robert you have a lot of light on you as well
- Tina Chase Gillmor
like almost whiting you out
- Tina Chase Gillmor
But they haven't moved on. Look at Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat
- Moe Glitz
From the POV of a developer - only reach matters. Second is ability to deploy and distribute. Mozilla has no reach
- Keith Teare
Foursquare should be the No 1 Location Brand, worth billions of dollars.
- Moe Glitz
checking in there can post your text and photo content to not only 4sq, but also FB & Twitter, and have mine also going to flickr using flicksquare
- Jerome Hughes
4sq location recommendations pushed to my Android useful (I could use notifications b4 I arrive)
- clive boulton
Tina: call me again.
- Robert Scoble
also instagram can post to foursquare, and uses foursquare for locations
- Kevin Marks
Twitter dropped 30% from the high: it dropped to $50.04 from off the high of the day before.
- Chien-Yu Lin
Keith: true, but mozilla had no reach wen it started...but firefox took off.. I suspect there are people who support this idea of an open web.. still I agree.. most people won't care.. its really about the best user experience.
- Michael Roberts
ok Robert...
- Tina Chase Gillmor
My system was starting to go wonky.
- Robert Scoble
Maybe Twitter should launch TwitCoin
- Moe Glitz
calling you Robert
- Tina Chase Gillmor
it's more about engaged users and how engaged, not only about number of users with accounts, many of whom aren't really engaged
- Jerome Hughes
Twitter has a low-threshold for entry / sign-on compared to other social networks. If you aren't on it now, you probably see no value in it for yourself and won't get in.
- Chien-Yu Lin
Crap my Logitech app isn't working.
- Robert Scoble
our studio cat, Gray wants some attention NOW
- Tina Chase Gillmor
more inspire than manage?
- Jerome Hughes
they've got a leaking bath - 1 bn account set ups, 1/4 of them still there
- Ian Waring
unless you're listening to broadcasts, then engagement is difficult
- Ian Waring
"onboarding" - whether they find valuable resources
- Jerome Hughes
Ads are Antithetical to Twitter's Ethos & Presentation Format https://www.facebook.com/photo...
- Chien-Yu Lin
direct messages broken. UI for most lay users needs an overhaul
- Ian Waring
what happened to Robert?
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Apparently a lot of new Twitter Users don't understand the UI and leave the site
- Moe Glitz
I'm having trouble with my logitech cam, Tina. Sorry.
- Robert Scoble
Robert nod if you can hear
- Tina Chase Gillmor
a good piece on Jean Louis Gassees Monday note last week about Twitter UI
- Ian Waring
For influence.. twitter is way better from my experience.. and btw. foundations are now using twitter as a measure and metric of whether to continue funding or not. I'm dealing with this now.
- Michael Roberts

- Ian Waring

- clive boulton
Gates opening Windows?
- Moe Glitz
How can Bill really go back to Microsoft? He is sooo engaged with the Gates Foundation..He is now the 5th largest donor in the world... That is huge.. That is his first love and he's doing a good job.
- Michael Roberts
Don't think Gates will ever donate his heart again to Microsoft
- Moe Glitz
Gates at Microsoft is smoke and mirrors.. Don't believe it.
- Michael Roberts
But he's had some time to be Mr. Big Charity guy. Doesn't he also care about his baby Microsoft? It is an old teenager or adult now
- Tina Chase Gillmor
keith is locked up but too close to close of show
- Tina Chase Gillmor
'roughly a huge trove'
- Jerome Hughes
Jeff Raikes runs Gates Foundation day-to-day
- clive boulton
Tina: Yes, but now he has a reputation in the donor world. (that I'm in)... He doing great... doubt he want to go backwards... solving HIV and Aids takes a lot of his time...
- Michael Roberts
If Foursquare was the killer location Brand, Facebook would have already acquired it as one of their key Multiplex Apps
- Moe Glitz
we should get Andreessen on
- Kevin Marks
Clive: Gates is very involved.
- Michael Roberts
AOL already reset the benefits.
- Chien-Yu Lin
Moe, only a Facebook acquisition could validate Foursquare as the killer location Brand?
- Jerome Hughes
Tim Armstrong: "Beatings will continue until morale improves."
- Chien-Yu Lin
Michael - Yes, he is doing amazing things. But he will step back into some more active role at MS.
- Tina Chase Gillmor
True Jerome, which is why Location is an open game
- Moe Glitz
Tina: I'm not so sure. Perhaps in the very short term.. but he has really been involved in his Foundation.. I think his role is political... He knows himself he's been out of that world for quite some time.
- Michael Roberts
Moe, Facebook is big and currently on top. Still, don't believe their location capabilities have eliminated Foursquare's location advantages.
- Jerome Hughes
btw... you guys have been mentioning companies.. I've been adding them to a virtual stock. (note virtual).. and I'm up 112% since I started.. the Gilllmor Gang fund...;)
- Michael Roberts
The story about the parents and AOL's Tim Armstrong: http://www.slate.com/article...
- Robert Scoble
Michael: that's a cool idea!
- Robert Scoble
Right Jerome. Twitter should own Location, but they are currently lost in transition
- Moe Glitz
+1 Steve
- clive boulton
facebook is involved in foursquare through instagram
- Kevin Marks
I've been following Steve.. for over 10 years... since the beginning.. I still think Steve is the best voice in the industry...
- Michael Roberts

- Jerome Hughes
thank you everybody... really and sincerely
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Thanks! Great Show.. As Always! Wish I was closer... but Montreal is lovely too.
- Michael Roberts
good show - I think the Tricaster has helped make the experience more compelling
- Charles Carrico
Charles - you mean new tricaster?
- Tina Chase Gillmor
better experience?
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Thanks for tuning in Michael Roberts
- Tina Chase Gillmor
btw.. as some of you know I'm involved with ICT4development.. Might start a kinda GG for developing countries... love to have some of you involved.. been thinking about this for 5 years... so don't hold your breath... but you are doing a great job.
- Michael Roberts
Tina: Thanks. You are fabulous! So happy you continue to put this show together.. I hope GG is getting something out of this..I feel so few people realize how important this show is to the industry.
- Michael Roberts
What nice comments. Thanks for joining us!
- Robert Scoble
name this show hit by power out: Flappy birrrrrrdy out.
- clive boulton
Tina: yes - the new tricaster - there seems to be a better flow in the conversations, perhaps because of the format of the talking heads on a colored background - it seems more visually logical, and the quality of the image has increased. Also there was something eerie about your hand waving in the background in the previous incarnation. It feels more cohesive now - like when Johnny Carson had the announcer become part of the show
- Charles Carrico
Thank you..
