For the English contingent, Football Half Time - England 3 - 0 Moldova
- Scott Jordan
Nice Danny Welbeck goal
- Keith Teare
Only ONE Brit scheduled to do the show today, Scott.
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Yes, but Ukraine will be the real test for England
- Tom Guarriello
hello gangers, nice to hear we're having the show today.
- flyinthesoup
keith, let's get back to the challenge of mixing conversations into streams ?
- flyinthesoup
Hello all y'all. we are starting to load the horses into the gate ;-)
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Up to Steve - happy to go there
- Keith Teare
yes, as he finished last show pretending he has the answer, he has to come up with it today, instead of just taking you down.
- flyinthesoup
I'm listening
- Francine Hardaway
and hopefully we're not just talking endlessly about how push notifications is going to be THE thing and nothing else matters
- flyinthesoup
MagicJack app on android drains your battery in hours as it keeps a connection active rather than using push notifications. Removed....
- Murray Macdonald
Sorry I was a little late. Hanging out now.
- Robert Scoble
Watch the watches. Fad or flop?
- Murray Macdonald
it seems the safe ways to do it are either implementing it via C2DM or you have to implement a polling strategy to do it nicely ( exponentialy ) not to drain the battery
- flyinthesoup
Why can't I see friendfeed in the sidebar, using Chrome
- Scott Jordan
...and...
- Tom Guarriello
Polling is a non-starter. A single byte over the radio turns it on for 60-120 seconds depending on the network.
- Murray Macdonald
England 4
- Scott Jordan
but you can only issue a notification from your app, so either it fetches something from the network or you have some offline generated notification issued by some running service on Android
- flyinthesoup
one more and we are off to the races
- Tina Chase Gillmor
It's the server than needs to reach the client when a call is incoming.
- Murray Macdonald
we use exponentially timed polling, which regulates the intervals to fetch data depending on the time between the updates in the server
- flyinthesoup
in order for the server to reach the client, the client must be listening...
- flyinthesoup
here we go
- flyinthesoup
he's specialized in putting up with your jokes Steve
- flyinthesoup
LOL
- Tony Stanislawski
Aloha!
- Nir Ben Yona
what do you mean by apple model ?
- flyinthesoup
http://techcrunch.com/2013... our show link on TC
- Tina Chase Gillmor
how hard was Ballmer pushed?
- Tom Guarriello
maybe Nokia said "we're only joining MS if Ballmer is not there" :o
- Charlie Isaacs
They need change. Radical change is their best bet.
- Murray Macdonald
the market is changing it anyway, it's not only up to one CEO's will
- flyinthesoup
how long do you believe it will take for MS to reposition with the best of breed CEO ?
- flyinthesoup
@Keith, which company did you run?
- J.C. Bouvier
realnames
- Keith Teare
Ah, nice.
- J.C. Bouvier
Surely MS have engineers who understand these emerging markets and innovative products in the back room. Too few ideas make it to being products. For years they have one of the world's best computer vision teams, but where are the products?
- Murray Macdonald
Why doesn't microsoft drop consumer and just become IBM 2.0?
- Matthew Voshell
Ballmer is too arrogant
- Moe Glitz
Hello from Northern Ireland. Looking forward tonights show, only came across Gilmore Gang last week. Great show
- Darren James
Welcome aboard Darren from Ireland
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Welcome Darren! Great Show
- Tony Stanislawski
Right, John. And then the talent doesn't want to work there...
- Tom Guarriello
welcome Darren!
- Charlie Isaacs
how long will it take in the best case to turn it around ?
- flyinthesoup
Robet, tell us a little bit about the hybrid cloud effects
- flyinthesoup
Why not be a single business umbrella with independently operated divisions each determining their own direction?
- Murray Macdonald
@Robert, instead of the consumer focused stuff, the business is attached to the IT Stack
- flyinthesoup
Problem is, most consumers feel that Microsoft is still in the PC World
- Moe Glitz
MS on Android would get me excited.
- Murray Macdonald
They need to become cool again. They are losing the xbox one vs. Playstation 4 battle to the kool kids...
- Tony Stanislawski
The Enterprise will come to everyone -- to everyone's smartphone, tablet. They will expect help everywhere they are, any time, from an expert. The Cloud Enterprise infrastructure will support this.
- Charlie Isaacs
He said software
- Tom Guarriello
I disagree. People buy platforms.
- Murray Macdonald
I think it's Both, Jobs always said software+hardware not just one
- Matthew Voshell
What's the best piece of hardware MS ever built?
- Tom Guarriello
Samsung, LG, Asus, whatever... Other than the camera apps, they're basically the same,
- Murray Macdonald
Brilliant Hat-trick from Ronaldo, for all Footie Fans
- Moe Glitz
The MS Mouse
- Murray Macdonald
Thats how hnrey ford become sucessful
- Matthew Voshell
first bullshit of the show ;-)
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Good one, @Murray
- Tom Guarriello
let's stop baching MS because of the registry and PCs. Let's account to the IT Stack transition to Cloud Enterprise infrastructure
- flyinthesoup
The famous "Burning Platform"...
- Tom Guarriello
MS have amazing scientist and technologies. They have one of the best computer vision teams on earth.
- Murray Macdonald
@Robert, it's not as linear as MSFT having built a tablet, Apple took the time to allow iPhone to distribute the user grammar - the gestures. He himself said the iPad had been ready before the iPhone...but they realized they had a better shot at the consumer education using w/the phone...and then the learnings from the phone would allow for the smaller consumer leap to the iPad/surface computing...
- J.C. Bouvier
hey Tina do you have a gamification console for that?
- Charlie Isaacs
Charles Atlas
- Moe Glitz
Major Nelson for PR, not really identified as a MS guy
- Tony Stanislawski
J.C. Bouvier ++
- Murray Macdonald
charlie - what? the swearing?
- Tina Chase Gillmor
yep Tina :)
- Charlie Isaacs
Community property FTW, Robert!
- Tom Guarriello
Why can google run diverse divisions that innovate while MS cannot?
- Murray Macdonald
IBeacon Robert
- Moe Glitz
Google are also now attacking the Windows market with Chromium and the announcement of Apps on the desktop
- Scott Jordan
Devices are vertically integrated.
- Ian Waring
sounds like Scoble just had a technological divorce :-p
- Charlie Isaacs
Services horizontal
- Ian Waring
yeah, the chat room used to drink on first swear, Beatles reference, track ref, etc
- Tina Chase Gillmor
I thought Google Glass works with IPhone just not directions. That better change when it goes retail
- Tony Stanislawski
Doesn't hardware always drive software? Capability is what developers build on, right?
- Tom Guarriello
Heavy Metal
- Moe Glitz
So Microsofts stated strategy device+services = vertical+horizontal - not clever!
- Ian Waring
i played with a surface yesterday for an hour and the touche screen is AWFUL... what is the charger? and then when i wanted to change settings i had to dig for 20 min
- Matthew Voshell
google glass does work with iphone, but not all features
- Keith Teare
Any BT headset is a BT headset. Hardware (heart rate sensors) will become generic through drivers. Sensors will need to standardize, then software will be cross-vendor and hardware agnostic.
- Murray Macdonald
Cramer agree with @Scoble
- Tony Stanislawski
turn bu turn doesn't work for example
- Keith Teare
Silicone Valley does not embrace MS
- Tina Chase Gillmor
holy scoble tangent
- Matthew Voshell
Windows have a WONDERFUL development suite. It's the target (mobile device) that no one wants to develop for. The tools they have are great, and there are millions of Visual Studio developers out there. The problem is the target. Imagine Visual Studio for Android.
- Murray Macdonald
it's CRUCIAL to think way, way ahead. it's not only about HW/SW. ChromeOS is going to kill all that is left from microsoft
- flyinthesoup
Keith: right. iPhone doesnt' work with Glass's 100% features.
- Robert Scoble
What about this...http://news.cnet.com/8301-10...
- Tony Stanislawski
Austin Powers
- Moe Glitz
Farber has locked up
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Since 2007, Google gave me 6 phones, Microsoft sent me a copy of Windows
- clive boulton
Google glass will be illegal to wear in vehicles here in the UK. Interested to here Robs views on that
- Darren James
Murray: right. Developer tools aren't enough.
- Robert Scoble
Farber always locks up
- Tom Guarriello
Clive: good point!
- Robert Scoble
Darren: stupid stupid law. Looking at Glass is FAR safer than using your car's navigation system.
- Robert Scoble
Easy, Robert. Brains get distracted by lots of things, not just what's in your hand
- Tom Guarriello
Scoble to head Microsoft
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Robert: I agree. They have them in spades. They lack a desirable development target.
- Murray Macdonald
Used Google Drive spreadsheets yesterday, quick office now integrated. Works beautifully. I'm off Excel now. ChromeOS coming in underneath. full suite $5/month.
- Ian Waring
Jack Welch said it: if you're not #1 or #2 in your market, you're gone
- Tom Guarriello
That's great. "People don't want to appear stupid". It's so true.
- Murray Macdonald
people are stupid
- flyinthesoup
That's because developers picked their devices years ago. As an experienced programmer it takes time to become proficient as a developer on a new platform. Current capable developers chose their platforms many months ago.
- Murray Macdonald
Free would work for MS
- Tony Stanislawski
It's not just developers. I was first in line for an iPhone. Literally. I am not a developer.
- Robert Scoble
Who could MS displace? Apple? Impossible. Google? Never. They're doomed to at best #3
- Tom Guarriello
The future of Microsoft Part 4.
- Moe Glitz
Are we going to talk about google's new chrome OS native apps? http://techland.time.com/2013...
- Matthew Voshell
MS has to reorganize to comeback many years in the future
- flyinthesoup
Services need ubiquity, run across all devices.
- Ian Waring
OK. Robert, you HAVE to give up thinking San Francisco is the world. My former foster kids wouldn't know an ecosystem from a bag of potato chips; they buy what their carrier has, and if it's cheap. They also don't think about risk
- Francine Hardaway
Francine: sorry, it just is clearer and clearer that if you don't win San Francisco you don't win the world. More accurately, though, is that you need to win the entire world all at once, but San Francisco is still key. Look at Uber.
- Robert Scoble
Apple made bets and they won big
- Moe Glitz
Devices need to Coopt rest of the value chain, vertical integration.
- Ian Waring
X-Box will be dented majorly by Chromecast + Tablets.
- Ian Waring
Look at Samsung. They just opened a huge lab and incubator in Palo Alto/SF.
- Robert Scoble
@Ian: Apple and Google are holding tightly to notifications and will not allow generic cross compatibility. They will do all they can to hold onto their proprietary channels and lock in users.
- Murray Macdonald
Moe - i noticed you use the iPhone for the chat
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Apple on their own devices. Google Services across all major platforms.
- Ian Waring
Microsoft can do a Helicopter Bernanke, drop baskets of phones to developers
- clive boulton
Many phone consumers are unsophisticated.
- Murray Macdonald
MS Technical DEBT is HUGE
- flyinthesoup
I try to live in my own little San Fran here in Milwaukee and promote it..:)
- Tony Stanislawski
drat, I was detained.....missing 45 minutes.....here now....guess I'll check out the archive later
- Dale Lature
Robert so cute. He's taken to raising his hand when he wants to say something
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Have you talked Beacons yet?
- Ludwig Ederle
Ludwig just a little bit.
- Robert Scoble
Why do you need to cut it up and change the name? Sounds like a huge distraction. What is really required is divisional autonomy each setting their own direction.
- Murray Macdonald
How about this out of the box idea: MSFT should fund a small, disruptive company that isn't in Seattle, and just keep it going while it grows. That way it can milk its existing businesses and still make something new happen.
- Francine Hardaway
15% of IBMs revenue is hardware now...
- Ian Waring
Branding does go a long way too... everyone does it, why do you buy lucky charms over the market genereic? the same in tech is true
- Matthew Voshell
we started a little late Dale
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Providing money wuarterly to the market is going to kill MS
- flyinthesoup
Francine: great.
- Robert Scoble
Samsung & Qualcomm is the next one
- flyinthesoup
flyinthesoup they can do that with their existing businesses
- Francine Hardaway
I am curious how beacons will play out next Tuesday
- Ludwig Ederle
Until we know who the new head of Microsoft is going to be all these arguments are rather moot
- Scott Jordan
Francine growth and future through acquisition
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Right, Tina. Buy don't build.
- Francine Hardaway
@Francine, the enery they need to turn research in to a new winning set of products is going to suck it all
- flyinthesoup
cheaper to buy than reinvent the wheel
- Matthew Voshell
I'll talk beacons. The existing BT4 stack on android doesn't allow signal strength detection (required for distance and beacon triangulation) except during the initial device scanning stage. Once a connection is established, you don't get signal strength updates until you disconnect and rescan.
- Murray Macdonald
Love that Idea Steve! Lets do it...
- Tony Stanislawski
Yup, that's right, Steve. We're oblivious to the implications of the sensors
- Tom Guarriello
If you can't defeat your competition, buy them
- Matthew Voshell
This would be fun: everybody is rushing into smart watches in anticipation of apple - except apple
- Ludwig Ederle
the "buy your success" strategy is not going to solve it
- flyinthesoup
Height of rudeness is looking at your watch in meetings
- Ian Waring
Apple is running into beacons
- Ludwig Ederle
neither for Yahoo, nor for Salesforce, and not for MS
- flyinthesoup
Sore subject with me this week, those sensors. Glass, Jawbone and Pebble all gave out on me, and FuelBand no longer accurate.
- Francine Hardaway
Ouch, Francine
- Tom Guarriello
I was thinking that about the fingers too!
- Laura Norvig
Well, apple is not really great when it comes to cloud
- Ludwig Ederle
@Robert, ha ha ha...that's great stuff...
- J.C. Bouvier
You could always hold a mirror up to them to figure out if theyre alive
- Francine Hardaway
Fitbit in the washing machine thought I'd done a Marathon
- Ian Waring
Why don't we take into account a much better positioned company like Salesforce having to make a quick change into their strategy with ChatterBOX offering
- flyinthesoup
Under My Thumb
- Moe Glitz
Francine: Windows used to crash every hour too. :-)
- Robert Scoble
BIO is really easy to steal.. get a knife, RObert that Tech is SOOO expensive...
- Matthew Voshell
Fingerprints are the wrong biometric marker.
- Murray Macdonald
plus BIO has tons of Type I/II errors
- Matthew Voshell
I remember
- Francine Hardaway
well, you can kind of fake it ;-)
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Mission Impossible 2.0
- Ludwig Ederle
Oracle buys Blackberry "unbreakable"
- clive boulton
That's why I switched to Apple
- Francine Hardaway
Title of the show...They have to be excited about themselves...
- Tony Stanislawski
I was impressed when my fitbit survived the washer and dryer
- Laura Norvig
Mercedes used to have a fingerprint sensor until robbers started cutting fingers off
- Ian Waring
That's what's wrong with fitbit. You lose it in the wash
- Francine Hardaway
I drove over my Misfit Shine and it gave it a wonderful weather looked
- Matthew Voshell
My fingerprints won't identify me anymore at the gym
- Francine Hardaway
Hang your shine around your neck Matthew
- Francine Hardaway
There already is an apple tv
- Ludwig Ederle
Steve - did you receive this link from me this morning. Beatles a capella: http://dangerousminds.net/comment...
- Ed Schlesinger
Just a new remote for search would be modern.
- Arnie Klaus
Chromecast will overtake Kinect as the fastest new consumer product to 10m units...
- Ian Waring
There are only 13m Apple TVs out there
- Ian Waring
I feel a bit weird about the finger print thing, in relation to the NSA/security business.
- Hilary Talbot
"This should brighten everyone's day" - I'm not sure this portends a turning point announcement for Apple...this is about the holiday quarter...
- J.C. Bouvier
My wife wants a gold 5S
- Ian Waring
What about this aussie kid, SonnieDickson and his ability to get his hands on apple products not even released
- Darren James
A Contextual Network, Robert
- Moe Glitz
im due for a phone upgrade... gold or not
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Chromecast API does the same...
- Ian Waring
It will get fixed, three iterations later
- Francine Hardaway
A dog can tell if you have cancer. I have three of them.
- Francine Hardaway
With beacons you could restrict your device to your known locations (home, car, office, your shirt, etc...)
- Murray Macdonald
"iOS 7 will ship w/the 5S on 9/24" Yes or No?
- J.C. Bouvier
Robert's Personal Cloud timing is spot on (if Tim Cook misses this cue he's toast)
- clive boulton
But Robert, that what has been said about all our other privacy measures in the past!
- Hilary Talbot
If "the future" were a woman i think scoble would have facebook stalked and takin pictures of her with his google glass.. ha
- Matthew Voshell
I'm going to watch Apple on Tuesday, and if it isn't cool, I'm getting a MotoX.
- Francine Hardaway
@J.C. history would suggest Yes
- Matthew Voshell
History has proven there's a way to fake everything.
- Murray Macdonald
KitKat is a product placement
- Francine Hardaway
Beta is pretty ironed out
- Matthew Voshell
Moto X is only good for 6% of the world in the USA.
- Ian Waring
What iOS 7 release is out right now
- Ludwig Ederle
Francine is about to jump ship?
- Tina Chase Gillmor
IMHO, iOS 7 + color backs + a bit less incentive to steal the phone from owners in developing markets = gold Jerry, GOLD!!
- J.C. Bouvier
The new devices do not represent the fragmentation problem. It's the old low end devices.
- Murray Macdonald
I've come to really like Android
- Francine Hardaway
And I can live in more than one ecosystem
- Francine Hardaway
The data from my pancreas is fascinating. No, wait, it isn't.
- Aron Michalski
Aronski, welcome home.
- Francine Hardaway
Aron... lol
- Tina Chase Gillmor
None of my data is either new OR interesting
- Francine Hardaway
Gotta go guys, enjoy the weekend all!
- J.C. Bouvier
Steve: Try something else regardless, just to be well-rounded. Live the other for 3 months like Robert did. I force myself to use that "other" platform every month or so.
- Murray Macdonald
John T is bored
- Tina Chase Gillmor
@Steve... that swipe up feature is KILLER!! I use it ALOT
- Matthew Voshell
Murray, I agree. And now I have both Chromecast AND AppleTV
- Francine Hardaway
Always watch the show from the UK to pick up on what's new - thanks for turning us on to iBeacons, just pre-ordered a bunch from Estimote - looking forward to trying them out :-)
- Matt Hicks
Mavericks + Haswell set to improve battery life immensely
- Darren James
Chrome apps on ChromeOS very impressive btw... atop Android or anything else
- Ian Waring
little touches are cool, but where is your ideology of an open world Steve ?
- flyinthesoup
Not bored as much as recovering from being kicked in the head for hours last night (Daughter)
- John Taschek
I was just at Verizon thinking about an upgrade to either an Android or apple device. I walked out with nothing because the only reason I would NOT get an iPhone is because its ANOTHER Apple device. Not a good reason to buy Android.
- Ed Schlesinger
name the show
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Everybody is ready to bail.
- Aron Michalski
Mavericks and Haswell sound like British accountants
- Francine Hardaway
Francine: I'm jealous. Can't get chromecast in Canada. I run Android 4.2 on a noname stick behind my TV.
- Murray Macdonald
Proof that FriendFeed is dead.
- Akiva
Chromecast is a very smooth experience
- Francine Hardaway
My 2nd Chromecast just shipped. Like it a lot
- Tom Guarriello
Love mine - works fine in the UK here
- Ian Waring
I've been wondering if gold has been chosen for the iphone partly because it's such an attractive colour in Asian cultures
- Hilary Talbot
Apple is not the same without Steve Jobs.
- Moe Glitz
Name: Microsoft bought who?
- Matthew Voshell
Lucky. Both Glass and Chromecast are not available in Canada.
- Murray Macdonald
@Francine I have a Roku, would i like a chromcast?
- Matthew Voshell
Moe, I believe that
- Francine Hardaway
MS Lync is amazing. Use it everyday with remote coworkers.
- Murray Macdonald
Matthew, I don't have a Roku, so can't tell you. Chromecast does much less right now
- Francine Hardaway
Apple default enterprise device is a huge statement from John
- Tom Guarriello
Services is the market that Apple needs to go after
- Moe Glitz
Moe, what about the Apple Store, they gives the best services
- Francine Hardaway
No one writes code on a phone or a tablet... Strange, isn't it.
- Murray Macdonald
Apple = devices. Only service multi platform is iTunes.
- Ian Waring
Are you using Instapaper, Pocket or other, Steve?
- Tom Guarriello
Happy Jewish New Year to all
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Google will keep innovating.
- Murray Macdonald
