You know the whole "robots will take low wage service jobs" thing? We had ordering terminals in Subway and KFC. Taken out in 6 months.
Waiting through the" Lunch Rush" for help desk to respond to a trouble call probably takes luster off robot love - WarLord
Plus, while I may order my sub correctly, I don't get to oversee the making. In a rush, cucumber gets put on. I take the sub back because cucumber (and the juices) make me gag. If I order as I go, I shut that shit down as they reach for it. - Johnny
uhm... bots can do without cucumbers either - it is Sub and KFC which don't care to keep your "history and preferences", IMO - piikummitus
Subway and KFC have bots that make your food as well? - Johnny
Even if they did, they'd still have to rely on humans to put the bins in the right places. Bots probably wouldn't recognize if a human put a bin of cucumbers where the bin of pickles is supposed to be, but a human would. - COMPLICATED MR. NOODLE
All of that said, a lot of places around here have taken out their self-checkout stands because they were too much of a hassle. We do still have places that have the touch screen ordering kiosks for food and stuff. - COMPLICATED MR. NOODLE
The idea that within 10 years every Subway or McDonalds will suddenly get fully automated is a pipe dream. Funny thing is, when Subway got the terminals, they didn't drop staff cause they still needed people to make them... the people who normally took the orders. This morning we got Maccas. If you put an ordering terminal in, they still need someone to pack and hand me my bag... they usually serve anyway. - Johnny
They bring the food to your table in Oz?? - Big Joe Silenced
No. The food gets made out the back then gets bagged by the servers at the front then handed to me over the counter. - Johnny
Huh. Never thought of that as serving, but okay. - Big Joe Silenced
Probably just local term but "people who take your order then pack your order and hand it to you" is abbreviated to "serve" :) - Johnny
I can't imagine the days of the Automat returning. If everyone thought they were such a great thing, they would still be popular and would not have been killed off by the emergence of fast food chains. - April Russo (FForever!)
Joe - there are fast food joints here in the states where they bring the food to your tables. Hardee's (Carl's Jr.) is one that comes to mind immediately, but I know there are others. - COMPLICATED MR. NOODLE
Culver's in the Midwest, Burgers etc - order at counter and have it delivered to your table - WarLord
We have Grill'd here. Same thing. - Johnny
