pause lets you go back in the history without much effort, which you couldn't do reliably on non-beta - mjc

I haven't hit pause since the beta came out. And I only did so then to see how it works. Not everyone is going to hit pause all the time. Only some are going to do so, and if your one of those then that is fine. But, they shouldn't get rid ofthe option just for those who don't like it. - Mathew™ aka Youngblood
