Crowd-checking a claim I'm making in something I'm working on: "At this point, electronic books are objectively harder for customers to use because of platform differences, learning curves and insufficiently mature technology."
I wouldn't quibble with that. - Jenica
Sounds accurate to me... Though at that point in the text, I'd bring up the YouTube video of the "book training" where the monks are trying to learn how to use a bound manuscript after years of scrolls. But that's just me. - WebGoddess
yep. - Marie
looks good. also drm but don't know how to add that elegantly to your sentence. - Christina Pikas
Webgoddess: yeah, that's the "at this point" bit--though I am also going to say something about how a service institution that expects/requires customers to have in-depth training in order to use a core service is going to push itself into a niche customer base... - Mark Kille
Christine: DRM will get explicitly called out a little later. For this sentence, it's entailed in platform differences and insufficiently mature technology. :) - Mark Kille
This is also true, Mark... - WebGoddess
Any way to work in (probably elsewhere) that publishers are doing what they can to fix the bug that is first sale? - barbara fister
Well, devil's advocate: they're easier for some populations. Those whose main reading style is interstitial. Those who need large text, or prefer reverse-video (ME). That said, ACQUISITION OF READING MATERIAL is without question a PITA compared to print, even when once you have it, it's nicer to read. :) - RepoRat
Barbara: Yes, DRM and first sale are going together as a management/budget issue (increased staff time and possible repeat purchases). - Mark Kille
RR: I definitely do need to clarify what I mean by "use" and to explicitly add in an accessibility disclaimer. - Mark Kille
Yeah, ACQUISITION is the pain. My limited experience with ereading (iPhone, Sony eReader) has been frustrating for me on the reading part, too, but that's not everyone's experience. - laura x
Depending on the size of print of the instruction manual :P - Meg VMeg
