Gillmor Gang, recording live today 1pm PST participate at http://www.building43.com/realtim...
Will start in five to 10 minutes. - Robert Scoble
I'm live at CES. By the way, I saw Twitter and Facebook everywhere here in Vegas but RSS? Hmmm. No, I won't go there. ;-) - Robert Scoble
Quora is so five days ago. :-) - Robert Scoble
RSS is like Obi Wan -- more powerful in it's so-called "death" ;-) - Brian Hendrickson
it's all http://cwora.com now - Kevin Marks
I'm going to ask on Quora if Quora is so five days ago... - John Taschek
I wrote about what to expect from Android this week: http://epeus.blogspot.com/2011... - Kevin Marks
Happy New Year everyone! - Tina Chase Gillmor
Happy new year to you and Steve, Tina - Hilary Talbot
a lot of mobile apps are web in an app wrapper - Kevin Marks
Scoble would have a better chance of debunking Kevin if he heard what he had to say first - Andrew Hazlett
You can't power it with bluetooth - Kevin Marks
Breaking: MG Siegler just got an invite to a Verizon event in New York on 1/11...possibly iPhone announcement http://techcrunch.com/2011... - Mark Krynsky
Kevin: my iPad lasts 10 hours battery. I don't drive that much. Took nine hours to drive to Vegas. - Robert Scoble
If you only talk to high end auto folk, you'll hear about Apple, sure. - Kevin Marks
Kevin: OpenTable CEO said same. So did eBay's mobile guy. So did Sephora's mobile girl. Etc etc. - Robert Scoble
Ever wonder why Angry Birds is for sale on iPhone and only free with advertising on Android? The Android customers don't buy as many apps. - Robert Scoble
There are more Android users now in USA than iOS, but the iOS users are more likely to buy. - Robert Scoble
Robert...you had me intrigued with the "wait til February" before buying a new phone the other day...but I think I've deduced that will be an HP product which I'm not interested in. I think now the decision will be an Android LTE or iPhone on Verizon dilemma though. - Mark Krynsky
Mark: you are probably right, but HP's phone is a lot of fun, though. I want one. - Robert Scoble
Android will win the "middle class" segment hands-down, Apple will go back to owning the "wealthy upper class" segment - Allen Stern
Allen: what if they drop prices? - Robert Scoble
Allen: and with Verizon phone coming, that might be very attractive. - Robert Scoble
Allen...or at least the female segment as today I heard about this Nielsen smartphone study where women prefer iPhones while men prefer Androids http://blog.nielsen.com/nielsen... - Mark Krynsky
Apple's iPad and iOS will gradually be disrupted from the bottom by Android in the low margin markets. Thinking of Clayton Christensen's theories of innovation and biz disruption. The Motorola tablet could be priced cheaper than the iPad. However, I trust Apple will continue to innovate and keep a hold on the high-margin, high-end market. - Alex de Soto
Apple can't drop prices and they don't need to - their market is willing to spend - Allen Stern
Allen: I disagree. I believe Apple can most definitely drop prices. Why? THeir customers buy more apps and the cost of making their devices has gone way down in last six months. - Robert Scoble
one other note (this coming from a guy with a 5 yr old winmo phone) - when i looked at the home screen of Louis Gray's android and an iPhone, it looks the same - people realize that they can get Birds game or almost any app on either device so it will come down to affordability and/or design choices for the person. - Allen Stern
Robert - the phone frankly should be free considering the app usage. - Allen Stern
Allen: that I agree with. That's why I think Apple is going to be forced to lower prices and/or come up with some new design changes. - Robert Scoble
Apple won't be smacked down like they were in 90's, but I can't believe their dominance is going to continue simply because they will be caught up in their own arrogance with their closed ecosystem. They will eventually spend more time protecting instead of innovating. - Phil Ashman
a bunch of my non-geek friends got android phones for Christmas. They were showing me apps. - Kevin Marks
Phil: yeah, and Steve Jobs might have painted himself into a design corner. Changing the design is going to be tough. - Robert Scoble
Kevin: paid ones? My brothers are like that too, but they will never pay for apps. - Robert Scoble
mostly free ones, yes. - Kevin Marks
I mean if you think about the old days, macs looked pretty, pc's looked like a cold box - now you have these phones that look so damn sweet from android and apple - is there really any difference at the end of the day between the two? - Allen Stern
Allen: less and less. There still is, but it's getting harder to demonstrate. - Robert Scoble
why don't one of you saying apple is better clearly explain why i should buy an iphone over an android phone when to me it seems like the android is less expensive and provides the same design and quality and app store. - Allen Stern
Allen: iPhone's camera is better. The app quality is higher. The UI is easier to deal with. The hardware is nicer. - Robert Scoble
Allen: iPhone has more apps, too, and gets first cut of apps. - Robert Scoble
Android has better voice integration, maps, google integration, syncrhonization/backup. It all depends on what you want. - John Taschek
The iPhone camera and software for it is clearly superior. My wife's shots in LA this winter rivaled anything from a point-and-shoot. - Alex de Soto
Android is variety. Want a keyboard? A bigger screen? A smaller screen? - Kevin Marks
ok robert - let's break those down - "camera is better" - but the EVO i thought had just as good a cam? "the app quality is higher" - but you can play birds on both the same? "the ui is easier to deal with" - not from what i saw louis show me - you have a home screen - you move left and right to see more apps - both do this the same? "the hardware is nicer" - the iphone is sexy but i think there are android phones that are just as sexy - Allen Stern
Allen: absolutely false. Have you ever compared the cameras? The Android ones suck. Why? Cameras are more than hardware! - Robert Scoble
what's funny is no one has mentioned windows phone 7 or rim or nokia in this discussion :) - Allen Stern
ok thanks Robert for the camera explanation - Allen Stern
my mom has never had a laptop or a smartphone. she has a desktop pc and a flip-phone until christmas. i talked her into trying an ipad and it has changed her life, she is buying all kinds of apps and installing them. she could do all of this on Android, but I think Apple's polished full-stack makes this fun/possible for her. android is the huge geek favorite and will grow fast too, people are passionate about both. "normal" people are REALLY passionate about apple devices and apps. - Brian Hendrickson
CES: Intel is less relevant, Ballmer needs to speed up ARM. - clive boulton
WinPhone7 has no apps. Nokia? GIve me a break. The UI sucks. RIM? Same, no apps, UI sucks. Great for email, but not for other stuff. - Robert Scoble
i do think developers will always prefer apple to android because it's their family - developers like apple so they want to support the family so to speak.. although if android starts to grow in mass numbers and paid or in-app ads can provide more revenue, some will move over - and then apple will just change the share or something to retain - Allen Stern
i am a rare bird - developer using all dell machines :) - Allen Stern
How long will Windows Phone 7 not have apps? 5,000 and more coming, Microsoft is throwing money at devs. They've put a lot of thought in the platform, and it could definitely succeed. - Mike Nayyar
Mike - I think Windows will shell out cash to get devs to make apps - I heard (i could be very wrong) that seesmic got some cash to make a winphone app straight away - Allen Stern
Developers like Apple OSX bcos they need Unix skills but have them - clive boulton
Allen and Mike: I know a lot of devs who turned down the cash. Does a bit of cash matter to Angry Birds? - Robert Scoble
And that's fine. Shelling out the cash to get devs to get the momentum rolling is a fine strategy. - Mike Nayyar
Scoble: I'm willing to bet it matters, between Angry Birds plush toys and a board game :P - Mike Nayyar
agree robert but it will matter to many perhaps - Allen Stern
Allen, I'm a PC guy too...I love my Dell XPS 16...of course the 256Gb SSD is the kicker. - Mark Krynsky
Allen: sorry, it really doesn't to many. Why? If your dev team knows ObjectiveC and Java, now you gotta defocus even further for a platform that hasn't sold many devices yet. - Robert Scoble
Agree Robert - it's chicken and egg - no one wants the phone because it has no apps and no developer wants to make apps because they haven't sold any phones - Allen Stern
Allen: exactly. Microsoft is catching up, but is three miles behind with five to run in a marathon. - Robert Scoble
John Borthwick - what does FB valuation mean for Tumblr..? - clive boulton
http://www.flickr.com/photos... is a nice Samsung android pic - Kevin Marks
Oh oh...lost you guys. - Mark Krynsky
Microsoft is in a position where they can learn from the mistakes of Palm, Android, Nokia etc. To Allen's point, no one wants a phone with no apps. So Microsoft is getting app momentum behind it. If Microsoft can make the licensing terms of WP7 more attractive then the free (though not really - look into the suits involving Microsoft and HTC re: Android) licensing terms for Android, it could get started - Mike Nayyar
Gotta pay that Internet bill.... - Rob La Gesse
Outage! - clive boulton
http://www.flickr.com/cameras... lots of choice in android cameras - Kevin Marks
LinkedIn and BranchOut (on Facebook) are doing interesting things in social combined with career networking. - Alex de Soto
Robert - I watched Ballmer the other day - the windows phone didn't get me excited - i was considering doing a post about the marketing from apple vs. android vs. winphone - Allen Stern
rebooting stream - Tina Chase Gillmor
hang with us - Tina Chase Gillmor
Allen: exactly. - Robert Scoble
Microsoft will have to invest in acquiring technologies and merging them into the Windows Phone line. They can consolidate the others in the market. - John Taschek
Borthwick's thoughts! catch them! - Brian Hendrickson
John: how about if Microsoft buys Nokia? - Robert Scoble
John: it's too late, I think. It's a long-tail app world and I don't see Microsoft catching up to Android or iOS in 2011. - Robert Scoble
i watch an apple ipad commercial and it's hot - it makes sense - they show you how it does what you want -- i see a bunch of illustrated martians playing with a windows phone - just not the same - Allen Stern
Robert: yes - they've got to be thinking about it now. Or they might focus on the enterprise market with RIM. - John Taschek
Its a given MSFT buys RIM or Nokia (nothing else moves the dial) - clive boulton
well robert - if microsoft does with windows phone what they did with bing -- buy the share - then they will see some traction although i bet it's harder to buy share on mobile - Allen Stern
@Allen - Ballmer isn't the same personality as Jobs - nothing he can do about making things sizzle. Put Belifore in front of the WP7 charge. As for marketing, the initial WP7 ads have been compelling (the ones which focus on the phone) - Mike Nayyar
My best Android (Samsung Galaxy S) photo of 2010 http://friendfeed.com/micahwi... - Micah
The HDR processing on iPhone 4 photos is sweet. - Alex de Soto

I see an odd image on the wall behind John. Is it Jesus, or something else? https://skitch.com/kr8tr... Call that crazy casino and sell the thing! - Rob La Gesse
Scobleizer (on a surging) Tumblr! - clive boulton
Kevin: Lanyrd could be the hot SXSW service this year. - Robert Scoble
Rob lol - Tina Chase Gillmor
in dave's design, a domain name: stevegillmor.com can be referred to as @stevegillmor -- and the client would do a DNS lookup (I wrote a rest server for this) https://github.com/voitto... - Brian Hendrickson
the DNS server would return a TXT or NAPTR record with a feed URL - Brian Hendrickson
Brian - so you assume we all have our own names? - Kevin Marks
Rob - shroud of an Angel... - clive boulton
a free service like twitter or facebook would offer [subdomains] so the free version would be @kevinmarks.twitter which is weird admittedly - Brian Hendrickson
