I just had someone tell me they thought Sweeney Todd was "cute" and that "the premise of chopping people up is just not that great." Uh. Did he even WATCH Sweeney Todd? (I'm talking about the stage production, not the Burton disaster)
My only experience is the Burdon disaster ... but I wouldn't use 'cute' - Shannon - GlassMistress
Ugh, I love Tim Burton but Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter chewed the scenery so hard in that one, it overtook everything else (plus I really think it was wholly unnecessary to play up the gore factor the way he did - stage productions, where the musical originated, never felt it necessary to focus on that aspect of the story that hard). - Hookuh Tinypants
That second part is what I didn't like - I didn't mind the performances, but I feel like the story does better restrained gore, given how just brutal it already is. (I did truly love Sacha Baron Cohen though, which was a bit of a surprise for me, since he's usually not my cup of tea.) But... cute? I've enjoyed most productions I've seen, but I can honestly say that's not how I'd describe it. - Jennifer Dittrich
i've been to a couple of different productions of "Sweeney Todd" over the years, not counting the one i teched on in the early 90s, and must say that i think "someone" is a frigging idiot. CUTE? - Big Joe Silenced
Theatre Three in Dallas did the production i attended where the first few rows got repeatedly splashed with gore like Gallagher recreating scenes from the SAW films. the audience were in their finery, too. :D - Big Joe Silenced
