Analytics haters are the sports world's version of Climate Change deniers. Silly, wrong and terribly behind the times. That's u Sir Charles.

At least with sports it's relatively harmless.

Very true. I don't understand the vehement (in some cases) opposition to it (in either instance). Admitting that analytics have a place in sports doesn't ruin or cheapen the sports in question in any way. Admitting that climate change is real won't... well I honestly haven't a clue what Climate Change deniers are afraid of happening so I can't fill in this blank. It makes no sense to me.

On the sports side I can at least see some valid points. Yes sports is more than numbers. There are things you can see in the games that numbers and formulas can't quantify. SportsVu cameras are helping us get dang close though so that may go out the window soon as well.

Part of it might be that analytics undermine some traditional ideas about sports (like questioning the value of batting average or pitcher wins in baseball). But I think they really help to understand the game better, especially in combination with the eyeball test.

That's exactly how I see it John. They enhance our understanding of what's going on in the games. They're a tool. Not the end all be all. Just a tool to be used in conjunction with other tools to provide insight into what's going on out on the field/court/playing surface. Fascinating stuff.
