Bland comment of the day: I'm not sure I quite get how it is that people who dislike something (let's say X), where that something is, oh, a style of music, a particular food or a variety of that food, whatever, get angry about the existence of X or don't understand why anybody else can like X.

I dislike salmon, olives (except as oil), pickles, and eggplant (except as tempura)--but none of those cause me the slightest bit of anger, and I understand why lots of other people like them. On the other hand, I'm missing out on making lots of posts that appear to attract lots of comments, so maybe my attitude here is wrong.

[Worth noting: my spouse is of the same opinion on olives, pickles and eggplant--and LOVES good wild-caught salmon.]

FINALLY A POST WHERE I CAN EXPRESS MY TINYRAGE ON BEETS!

Ah, but beet *greens* can be really good.

You also hate bad typography, bad statistics, and some word usages that I can't remember offhand.

True enough. Actually, dislike may be more like it...I rarely have energy enough for true hatred. I don't claim to be consistent. (OTOH, if there are people who *like* bad typography and bad statistics, they rarely seem to say so--well, except indirectly by creating all those infographics.)
- walt crawford
And many people like those infographics.
- laura x
Yep. When it comes to infographics, I'm pretty sure I'm in a minority. So I try to avoid saying "I don't see how anybody can like infographics." I may not always succeed. (There *are* good infographics, although I may always fail to see how being forced to scroll down a screen benefits understanding, but never mind...)

^^^I think you just made my point for me, Walt.

(I was going to use an emoticon there, but then I remembered you don't do emoticons, either.)
- laura x
Instead, you may imagine me smiling and shaking my head in much the same way I do at the three year old when he wakes up and says, "Can I have a chocolate cookie?"
- laura x
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, cookie.

Laura: And I don't disagree (that I made your point for you). (As for emoticons, I don't dislike them, I just don't use them. Yet.) And you're welcome to shake your head at me that way any time you want.
