- Paul E. Ester
Don't forget to talk about Weiner, the politician brought down by a missing "d".
- Paul E. Ester
Well, what do you know, a GillmorGang at a time I can actually watch live.
- PXLated
Nice surprise
- clive boulton
Coolio! I'm standing by waiting for the call.
- Robert Scoble
I have NO IDEA what we're talking about today! ;-)
- Robert Scoble
3 min after! Should be on in about 10 more?
- Ralph Henson
the huge news story today - that Minecraft is coming on xbox
- Kevin Marks
That changes EVERYTHING!
- Ralph Henson
hi everyone. Happy Monday! y'all ready?
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Ralph: we're hooking it all up.
- Robert Scoble
Give us a couple more minutes.
- Robert Scoble
Can't wait to see 'Gillmor in the Cloud'!
- Ralph Henson
Ralph: YouTube is coming to Xbox. I'm so excited!
- Robert Scoble
Kevin, did you attend the Apple event?
- Amyloo
I clicked on the wrong live feed this AM as saw all this x-box shit. WTF?
- Ralph Henson
Twitter is moving fast tonight for some reason. Did some cool company announce something?
- Robert Scoble
I didn't attend, but I watched the stream
- Kevin Marks
I think Steve will be disappointed - Apple TV ..er airplay still seem to be a side show - for the most part
- Michael Roberts
Michael: well, Apple has Airplay. Google and Microsoft doesn't.
- Robert Scoble
And, they had to save something for the new iPhone announcement in August.
- Robert Scoble
my android devices send to airplay via DoubleTwist
- Kevin Marks
xbox is gonna be the household entertainment hub
- Tim Jones
Seems to be more a distribution solution than a stream solution
- Ralph Henson
Ralph, I'd pay to see Stve in a God robe costume sitting on a cloud
- Amyloo
Here we go
- Mark Vaske
It's the "iSteveGillmor" show.
- Robert Scoble
version history. see changes between docs
- Mark Vaske
Depth of Cupertio vs Skin deep Redmond
- clive boulton
cliveb: yup. Microsoft is in real trouble.
- Robert Scoble
It is worse for Windows Phone 7. No developer I'm talking with is betting on it. The VC market is betting actively against it.
- Robert Scoble
remind me... what does Microsoft do?
- Tina Chase Gillmor
What about what Apple did to their developers.
- Francine Hardaway
Francine: they paid them $2 billion in past two years. They will get over it. They have no other choice.
- Robert Scoble
post anything your doing to twitter. free advertising.
- Mark Vaske
there's a twitter API meeting wednesday night
- Kevin Marks
Sounds a lot like what Twitter did, Robert
- Francine Hardaway
the imagicnation's drying up in Cupertino, all those iPhone stuff today's is trying to catch up to Android
- Tim Jones
Francine: except Twitter hasn't shown us any new features to keep the infrastructure excited.
- Robert Scoble
Would like to hear views on the robustness/richness of native apps & cloud combination vs the thinness of say Google docs - To me, there's no comparison.
- PXLated
Saturday saw MSFT deliberately shifting strategy from marketing to design (Unicorn of love - Hanselman) huge catch up
- clive boulton
PXLated: I'd love to hear more from you on what you think about that.
- Robert Scoble
that's a good airplay feature.. but not necessarily innovative.. just a logical feature to have
- Michael Roberts
what is iMessenger's user ID ?
- chris dowling
Robert - I think there is just so much more one can do with native apps than you can ever do on one size fits all cloud apps.
- PXLated
Right. We'll get into that shortly.
- Robert Scoble
they have been busy doing all of what they announced today.
- Mark Vaske
Wonders if John's up for smuggling Branston Pickle
- clive boulton
you can buy branston here
- Kevin Marks
Branston, wow. never thought i'd see that mentioned in a Gillmor Gang chat.
- Jamie
iCloud == DropBox for iOS ?
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
GOing to London in July. Will investigate
- Francine Hardaway
AFAIK there is no arbitrary file backup
- Jamie
Apple did well with icloud - but the problem is most of it isn't designed for groups (although calendar thankfully now is more like google calendar) but how does this work with a family let alone a company.. it's perfect for the mobile - me person.. who uses different machines.
- Michael Roberts
Yes, bear
- Francine Hardaway
Jamie: this Gillmor Gang brought to you by Christopher Creek winery, which is what I'm drinking tonight. ;-)
- Robert Scoble
iCloud APIS? I remember dotmac APIs http://developer.apple.com/interne...
- Kevin Marks
so not a dropbox killer, but a very needed component in the platform > backup and restore of app data
- Jamie
Exactly, Robert
- Francine Hardaway
Scobilizer on KV DB making me drool
- clive boulton
Jamie - but file features are not a part of iPad/iPhone
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
true
- Jamie
the twitter integration is much deeper than I anticipated. "There is follow graph synchronization, which enables you to bootstrap a user's social graph for your app."
- Jamie
Every new feature listed http://www.maclife.com/article...
- Mark Vaske
push notifications to multiple end-points over the "cloud" has always been a big-infra problem - Apple *had* to solve it since their infrastructure is so closed
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
wow, lots of hydration going on behind the scenes
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Tina: well, it's 5:30 pm!
- Robert Scoble
I am drinking a red wine called Cupcake:-) It's everything
- Francine Hardaway
right, robert. I should have thougt about it myself. My switching might be better under the influence
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Kevin, Jamie - so want giant Branston w/o price gouging
- clive boulton
for me, Branston smooth > chunks
- Jamie
im in the UK though - no idea where you get it in the States
- Jamie
all 250 features in Lion: http://www.apple.com/macosx...
- Jamie
Apple announcements represent a new shift in the center of gravity. Android oops. Desktop oops. Desktop era software oops
- Keith Teare
Yes. Apple owns us now
- Francine Hardaway
Keith: we are firmly in Steve Jobs pocket!
- Robert Scoble
please discuss the location aware reminders!
- Mark Vaske
Shit, even on vacation I'm giving him money. Isn't he majority shareholder in Disney?
- Robert Scoble
Mark: I missed those.
- Robert Scoble
@Borthwick. Careful (Shhh).... Awesome for just.me today BTW
- Keith Teare
I will love that feature
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Those were the things that replace Remember the Milk, Robert
- Francine Hardaway
First opportunity to watch GG live - always watch the podcast - Didn't realize all these ads were thrown at ya live.
- PXLated
twitter address book feature too late to same Congressman Weiner?
- Ralph Henson
Francine: cool.
- Robert Scoble
FB burned Apple with Ping over FB Connect. Hence the public snub.
- Jamie
not majority, but largest shareholder
- Kevin Marks
That said, good luck making iMessage work without FB Connect.
- Jamie
Robert: you can set a location in your individual reminder. ie call when you get home pops up upon arriving home.
- Mark Vaske
Ralph: that guy is an idiot. It's always the lying about the sex that will get you in trouble.
- Robert Scoble
adding friends via email - no thanks
- Jamie
Robert, that was a joke!
- Ralph Henson
Facebook would be crazy to align like that
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Agree. You can have phone sex, twext, whatever, but don't lie
- Francine Hardaway
I survived the photos of me kissing a guy in London at a party. Why? I didn't lie about it. ;-)
- Robert Scoble
pinot robert?
- Tina Chase Gillmor
No. You survived because no one cares:-)
- Francine Hardaway
"Whenever someone tries to reach you, the FaceTime call rings through on every Mac you own even if FaceTime isn’t running."
- Jamie
Tina: Cab.
- Robert Scoble
Tina: but Maryam likes the Pinot better. Christopher Creek is the best in Sonoma at doing that.
- Robert Scoble
Or maybe it was expected behavior Robert :-)
- PXLated
Scoble. Yes, but its a nice pocket with lots of room to do stuff.
- Keith Teare
Beginning of the end of Windows UI
- clive boulton
PXLated: exactly! ;-)
- Robert Scoble
now waiting for android to catch up on things it lacks vs iOS
- Mark Vaske
nobody has ever said modal notifications were better Kevin
- Jamie
even MG
- Jamie
MG said it was irrelevant
- Kevin Marks
wrong time to give my iPhone4 to a friend I guess :/
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
then he is an idiot
- Jamie
untethering the ipad from the PC I think is huge.. I really wonder how many developers (like twitter) will make the ipad - or tablets the primary platform for development and the PC the secondary development platform
- Michael Roberts
Kevin/Louis live in that world where you cut off your nose to spite your face :-)
- PXLated
Love Christopher Creek Pinot
- Francine Hardaway
Scoble is goofin with me
- Tina Chase Gillmor
What did MG say?
- Robert Scoble
Tina: having fun!
- Robert Scoble
Your commenters were incredible, Steve
- Francine Hardaway
I want to know what Kevin is drinking. He's contentious tonight:-)
- Francine Hardaway
Francine: he's a Google fan, I'd be contentious too on an evening like this.
- Robert Scoble
they have about 70% of my music. Spotify about 40%
- Jamie
did you see this piece yet? 10 apps or services Apple just killed. http://www.maclife.com/article...
- paisano
A rabid Google fan:-)
- Francine Hardaway
25/year gives you access to 18,000,000 songs. the rest you can put in your 5 gbs
- Mark Vaske
Robert - Exactly
- PXLated
no kevin
- Jamie
you get 25,000 tracks
- Jamie
for $25
- Jamie
Steve is correct, as usual. lol
- Jamie
they didnt specify
- Mark Vaske
It's a very bad day to be a Google fan :-)
- PXLated
they did specify. 5gb is app data basically
- Jamie
That's a lot of app data.
- Robert Scoble
music is excluded from the 5gb. its unlimited for itunes purchases, but 25,000 for the matching service
- Jamie
GG haz my vote for superseding PBS NewsHour
- clive boulton
John: the service that cost 25 mirrors the now itunes tracks in your library
- Mark Vaske
non*
- Mark Vaske
I have no idea how the labels were dragged into this
- Jamie
i mean, how apple got them to agree to it
- Jamie
Jamie - Isn't it that they now at least get paid something for all those pirated songs?
- PXLated
@jamie - "magic"...?
- Mark Vaske
Jamie: money money money money!
- Robert Scoble
possibly PXL
- Jamie
you can keep your version if its already there
- Mark Vaske
though I can sign up for one year then cancel. I have automatically legitimised all my illegal rips.
- Jamie
$25 gets you music from the 18 million tracks they have from the big labels.
- Kevin Marks
I don't know anyone older that can tell the difference
- PXLated
then the half gig of other music you have you put it onto the free service
- Mark Vaske
lots of independents on iTunes. easy to upload your work.
- Jamie
Lady gag
- paisano
you have the beatles, but not the grateful dead
- Kevin Marks
he DOES listen to Gaga
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Steve is so hip. I downloaded it from Amazon
- Francine Hardaway
iBooks style liner notes. Im in
- Mark Vaske
physical media.... bleh
- Jamie
he plays gaga on turntable
- Kevin Marks
get soundcrank.com for lyrics and album art
- paisano
I think its game over - agree with Steve
- Keith Teare
Don't see today's wwdc helped Steven Sinofsky, rather put him under massive pressure
- clive boulton
I dont think it is game over until apple follows up with an all you can eat service
- Jamie
cant wait for movies and tv shows now!!!
- Mark Vaske
also this continues to make apple tv a power house
- Mark Vaske
if apple adds ping to icloud & imessage they will have serious facebook challenger
- paisano
being a network ops type person, all I can think about is how much comcast is going to suck out of my wallet with the increase in streaming my personal use will cause
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
cliveb: Steven Sinofsky is gonna struggle. Win8 is late.
- Robert Scoble
cliveb: the game has changed and the Microsoft execs don't quite realize it yet.
- Robert Scoble
The question "What is the Cloud?" and How does it operate with (a) the desktop and (b) mobile devices now has a new answer. Facebook is the BIG loser
- Keith Teare
did they say anything about video?
- Amyloo
the carriers found out when we did
- Jamie
not much about video, no
- Kevin Marks
cliveb: all I need to know is walk through Facebook's dev group. It's 90% Mac, despite Microsoft investing in Facebook.
- Robert Scoble
@amyloo, not yet, but its in the works
- Mark Vaske
And even though Twitter is a winner its only a small win. Apple and users are big winners
- Keith Teare
Same thing at VMware. Same thing in many Silicon Valley companies (in fact all startups I've been in lately).
- Robert Scoble
Ping should be the name for iMessage. what a screw up
- Jamie
Keith: agreed. Twitter is in the middle of managerial chaos. Twitter's win is thanks to the folks who started LaLa.
- Robert Scoble
yes, I thought that
- Kevin Marks
@robert huge win for devs
- Mark Vaske
lively chat... such a hugepart of our show
- Tina Chase Gillmor
video down for me :( think it is just my end though
- Jamie
tweetdeck still much better for multiple accounts and creating columns for hashtag tracking scheduling tweets etc
- paisano
me also
- Mark Vaske
:-(
- Ralph Henson
Robert: Feeling Redmond is shifting strategy from marketing to design (not sure from top down or bottom up)
- clive boulton
Down here also
- PXLated
I wonder how long tweetdeck will be kept around
- Jamie
lost the feed
- Keith Teare
Too bad, best Gillmor Gang ever
- Ralph Henson
having two clients for the mac, iphone and android just seems dumb
- Jamie
Getting an Off Air screen
- PXLated
@jamie true...twitter will try to add tweetdeck elements to weak web UI
- paisano
Funny, Twitter went down.
- Robert Scoble
down here. I heard until “if you integrate with us…” I was hoping to hear you guys discussing this apparent stab at Facebook with Twitter integration.
- Miguel
we're workin onit folks...
- Tina Chase Gillmor
today's announcements were as important in some ways as the iphone and ipad unveilings..icloud severes the tie to the pc age
- paisano
It's up here, so hang out a second.
- Robert Scoble
Do feel a bit sorry for Marko at Instapaper but he says he expects to prosper
- Ralph Henson
Twitter went down for me, which is funny.
- Robert Scoble
just back for me
- bear (aka Mike Taylor)
Vid back
- PXLated
back
- Jamie
no mention of ping...how odd
- paisano
You guys do an awesome job, thanks to rackspace, tricaster and salesforce :) and Tina
- Paul E. Ester
loved the joke about mobileme... high point of event
- paisano
it will be good for Marco. widens the market. he will always have the edge for features. i.e. Reading Lists is Safari only. what is that, 5% of the desktop market?
- Jamie
aw shucks Paul thanks
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Danny is on twitter saying apple's cloud strategy is playing catchup now...
- Mark Vaske
Google docs = Pathetic = Yes :-)
- PXLated
office 365 might impress
- paisano
Danny is crazy
- Jamie
John hit it on the nose - Google = UGLY
- PXLated
docs and open with version histories perhaps?
- Mark Vaske
The Beatles landed on iTunes Nov.16 2010. It is a scary and bold statement to say that iTunes have 99% of the music we care about. I love simplicity of iTunes and Apple, but we must embrace all music and art !!! -like we must love all people, regardless of race, skin or color. Shame on you :-)
- Fredrik Darum
It will push Google but KILL Microsoft
- Ralph Henson
MS looks pretty strong to me. Office 365 kills Google Docs. WP7 so much more refined and powerful than Android. Their media story is that much stronger. Then there is the gaming side (that dashboard today looked awful like apps coming to xbox).
- Jamie
Do you think it'll be easier for Apple to add collaboration or Google to grow a right-brain?
- PXLated
are you trolling me, Jamie?
- Kevin Marks
absolutely not.
- Jamie
@kevin did they say the version history disappeared. I didn't see it. I saw options to lock a document to create a template...
- Mark Vaske
yes, Phil Schiller sais 'when you email it, the history is not sent' - they have CVS, not git
- Kevin Marks
ok i believe you
- Mark Vaske
JohnT: sometimes being boring turns real exciting. Consumerized enterprise must be coming w/ a bang.
- clive boulton
i keep thinking friendfeed was dead...why has facebook kept it going? Glad..but surprised they didn't just take its features and kill it
- paisano
"Lion's built-in screen sharing will work with Apple IDs."
- Jamie
Good to hear Scoblizer tell about Enterprise on the Apple
- clive boulton
@cliveb - totally agree - consumerized enterprises are the current and future kings/not the past.
- John Taschek
using windows apps on macs? that's a very particular hell
- Kevin Marks
salesforce is soiling themselves now
- paisano
windows mass of apps are 10+ years old. Apps from iOS are under 5 years old and many are ported right into the mac app store
- Mark Vaske
Kevin: heh, they aren't that bad. I still run WIndows on my Mac occassionally.
- Robert Scoble
Mark: most iOS apps are less than two years old.
- Robert Scoble
windows won the enterprise because of apps, and now their apps are old
- Mark Vaske
@robert - exactly
- Mark Vaske
Doesn't anyone care that Apple has so much control? Apple and Facebook
- Francine Hardaway
Forget Microsoft
- Francine Hardaway
90% of corp workforce does not need Office - If they don't need Office, they don't need Microsoft
- PXLated
I'm in IT and still spend a buttload on Microsoft licenses ...glad it's the post pc era...sheesh
- paisano
It might even be 98%
- PXLated
minecraft on xbox - imagine the kinect integration
- Kevin Marks
even vmware enterprises rely on microsoft licenses for windows servers...
- paisano
Kevin - How many xBoxes sold vs iDevices/Macs?
- PXLated
Corp workforce reliance on Windows doesn't limit itself to Office. There are hundreds of thousands of LOB apps
- Jamie
That's true Jamie but those can be accessed through Citrix or other means can't they?
- PXLated
Kevin looks a wee bit like Albert Finney
- paisano
I hope that's a good thing; he is a quite a bit older than me
- Kevin Marks
yes .lol..i meant to say younger Finney...cheers
- paisano
And what if you don't want/trust the cloud
- Francine Hardaway
Somethings afoot at Microsoft (it may be Ballmers feet) strategy is shifting to design, coming from ScottGu's team
- clive boulton
Francine: I have a Windows XP machine you can have! ;-)
- Robert Scoble
cloud 1.0 vs cloud 2.0 - 1.0 = mail, calendar, contacts. 2.0 = 1.0 + apps, books, pictures, music, video
- Mark Vaske
Apple will create the first usable robot
- Fredrik Darum
cliveb: Sinofsky knows his big challenge is to keep up with Apple.
- Robert Scoble
Great question Francine... then wait for umbrella...which will block icloud access
- paisano
cliveb: I don't see good things for Microsoft ahead. They should have bet harder on Xbox instead of Windows brand. Poor leadership there.
- Robert Scoble
Scoble don't be a turncoat on Microsoft
- paisano
you owe them everything
- paisano
Does your sunburn hurt Robert? Looks painful :-(
- PXLated
Robert: Sinofsky - he's moving backwards faster.
- clive boulton
did you see some of the Xbox announcements today?
- Jamie
paisano: no I don't. I had thousands of readers a day before I got to Microsoft. But, agree, Microsoft was very good to me.
- Robert Scoble
looks like they are betting hard in this space.
- Jamie
Jamie: yes. Xbox is pretty good, but I'm talking about mobile and desktop.
- Robert Scoble
I enjoy Steve's ramblings on TC...so poetic stream of consciousness stuff. The trolls hate it...
- paisano
Jamie: it's called WINDOWS Phone 7. Not Xbox Portable.
- Robert Scoble
thank to all the Gang members and all the chat folks. you guys ROCK!
- Tina Chase Gillmor
Yup Trolls hate Steve
- clive boulton
thank you
- paisano
but it contains Xbox Live :)
- Jamie
It was awesome!
- Robert Scoble
Jamie: contains is not enough.
- Robert Scoble
Tina - Good to be live for a change
- PXLated
Jamie: Windows Phone 7 is failing and failing hard.
- Robert Scoble
terrific GG timing / realtime!
- clive boulton
Jamie: and it isn't gonna be able to get back up.
- Robert Scoble
the trolls had aneurysm whem Steve wrote about Rosebud... huh? what?
- paisano
Jamie: developers around the world are voting actively against WP7.
- Robert Scoble
Jamie: and that's death.
- Robert Scoble
I heard you shitting on it in the last show. im a fan personally, though the app situation isn't ideal.
- Jamie
Jamie: it's not ME shitting on it. It's the developers.
- Robert Scoble
Jamie: I'm just the messenger.
- Robert Scoble
no, you were last week
- Jamie
you said it was horrible lol
- Jamie
yea Robert you couldn't just use the windows 7 phone for a whole day...
- paisano
Jamie: well, it is. Use it. It lags. It has features missing. Cut and paste anyone? And apps just totally suck on it.
- Robert Scoble
cut and paste is on there. did you get the update?
- Jamie
paisano: I keep using it, actually, because the Microsoft fanboys say I needed to give it more than that.
- Robert Scoble
win8 looks great...so does ie10
- paisano
Jamie: hmmmm. Let me pull it out. Hang out.
- Robert Scoble
is it too late?
- paisano
paisano: it's too late. 2012? Give me a break.
- Robert Scoble
Microsoft likes to make us w8
- paisano
7.5 has a very solid list of features though. a lot of which were announced today by Apple. for me it has by and large caught up with the kind of core functionality you would expect, as well as excelling in areas like gaming, media (particularly over Android)
- Jamie
that said, it lags when it comes to apps.
- Jamie
$29 vs $$$ for w8
- clive boulton
and i agree about quality...twitter for iphone is so much better than twitter for WP it isnt even funny
- Jamie
Microsoft's dinosaur era development life cycles have hurt them... it's all about iteration now
- paisano
Oh, sorry, I see there's an update available for WP7 but I gotta connect it to a PC and I don't have a PC.
- Robert Scoble
what have you released for me lately
- paisano
you can do it on a Mac robert
- Jamie
via the Windows Phone Connector. That's how I updated
- Jamie
Its in the Mac App Store
- Jamie
Product design cadence killing MS
- clive boulton
Jamie: hmmm. Got it. Damn that's intuitive.
- Robert Scoble
not ideal OOBE. but funnily enough I find the syncing mechanism (it picks up your iTunes library/playlists/podcasts etc) to be better than what it is on the PC via Zune
- Jamie
Redmond must stop LOAP development (Lipstick on a Pig) and go whole hog from the ground up
- paisano
not sure W8 is that though. the whole "its just a skin" meme is kinda stupid
- Jamie
Windows 8: The Beginning of the End of Windows http://bit.ly/lMohcZ
- clive boulton
i know...win8 is pleasant radical departure
- paisano
clearly W8 is a platform in itself... with a new app environment... apis specifically for it. the likes of engadget and thisismynext are writing it off as some kind of HTC-sense piece of work. crazy.
- Jamie
much needed
- paisano
the question for me is not why it runs "classic" windows, but whether it will run adequately on low power chips, and deliver the 8-10 hours battery life needed
- Jamie
windows phone picks up your itunes libraries? Won't Apple squash that like they did to WebOS on palm?
- Kevin Marks
