Every interaction there, I'm on edge -- does this post meant for a group accidentally tag people outside the group? Which third party gets info about my friends? Is this a trap, a mistake, a misclick, an overshare, an error? Who sees what? Who tracks what? What experiment are they trying on me now? Is this feed real or filtered?

I may use Facebook, but at heart to me it feels precarious, adversarial. I will never trust it. I can never relax there. It will never be home.

Yup. While it actually has tools that allow more granular control as to who the post goes to than FF does (I can't remember whether we can do multi-DMs here), Facebook is *so* bad about remembering the prefs you give it and so on-the-record disdainful of privacy that I'll never entirely trust it.

What Facebook isn't -- clean, simple, lightweight and intuitive. And one feels like a lab rat within its confines. But there is a tremendous amount of activity going on there -- much of it interesting.

Lab rat -- exactly right. But also I feel like a product there, a thing, a mark, a rube.

If you have to be that concerned about privacy for specific things, I would question whether or not what you're saying or sharing should be done on a social network anyway, to be frank. On the plus side, it does train people to be more mindful about what it is they're posting and how. You learn to quickly check your settings before posting. And you also learn that despite how careful you can be with anything, there will always be a dishonest person you trusted who will disseminate your private info no matter what. *shrug* It's the internet. No matter where you go, you can be exposed.

I use facebook for a dispersion point. I have not found a Friendfeed alternative I like. We are friends on Friendfeed and it is shutting down. I would like to stay connected with you somehow :) Could you connect with me on LinkedIn? I cannot as you are too far removed for me to do so with the "free" account. https://www.linkedin.com/in...

please sign this and tell your friends to do that to save our Friendfeed :( http://www.standunited.org/petitio...

Hookuh, you're right. And I use FB, so the feeling I get there doesn't stop me from posting entirely. But I can't shake that adversarial feeling I get there. It's a culmination of how the UI there feels to me, and their business model, and their past privacy transgressions. My posts there feel more restrained as a consequence.
