Hero - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki...
"A hero (heroine is usually used for females) (Ancient Greek: ἥρως, hḗrōs), in Greek mythology and folklore, was originally a demigod, their cult being one of the most distinctive features of ancient Greek religion.[1] Later, hero (male) and heroine (female) came to refer to characters who, in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness, display courage and the will for self sacrifice—that is, heroism—for some greater good of all humanity. This definition originally referred to martial courage or excellence but extended to more general moral excellence." , good guy or hero , A hero is a person who performs extraordinary deeds for the benefit of others. , Hero, any demigod worshipped in the Greek hero cult http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... , People's Hero http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... a folk hero http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... , Culture hero http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... 1 -4 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... The ancient Babylonians made promises to their gods at the start of each year that they would return borrowed objects and pay their debts.[2] The Romans began each year by making promises to the god Janus, for whom the month of January is named.[3] In the Medieval era, the knights took the "peacock vow" http://www.slate.com/blogs... at the end of the Christmas season each year to re-affirm their commitment to chivalry.[2] At watchnight services, many Christians prepare for the year ahead by praying and making these resolutions.[4] There are other religious parallels to this tradition. During Judaism's New Year, Rosh Hashanah, through the High Holidays and culminating in Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), one is to reflect upon one's wrongdoings over the year and both seek and offer forgiveness. People may act similarly during the Christian liturgical season of Lent, though the motive behind this holiday is more of sacrifice than of responsibility, in fact the practice of New Year's resolutions partially came from the Lenten sacrifices.[4] The concept, regardless of creed, is to reflect upon self-improvement annually. 9 -9 ? Sort Merton's theory of deviance http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... is derived from Durkheim's idea of anomie http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... . It is central in explaining how internal changes can occur in a system. For Merton, anomie means a discontinuity between cultural goals and the accepted methods available for reaching them. Merton believes that there are 5 situations facing an actor. Conformity occurs when an individual has the means and desire to achieve the cultural goals socialised into him. Innovation occurs when an individual strives to attain the accepted cultural goals but chooses to do so in novel or unaccepted method. Ritualism occurs when an individual continues to do things as proscribed by society but forfeits the achievement of the goals. Retreatism is the rejection of both the means and the goals of society. Rebellion is a combination of the rejection of societal goals and means and a substitution of other goals and means. Thus it can be seen that change can occur internally in society through either innovation or rebellion. It is true that society will attempt to control these individuals and negate the changes, but as the innovation or rebellion builds momentum, society will eventually adapt or face dissolution. - Thomas Page
Sort ? Liminoid ) In anthropology, liminality http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... (from the Latin word līmen, meaning "a threshold"[1]) is the quality of ambiguity or disorientation that occurs in the middle stage of rituals, when participants no longer hold their pre-ritual status but have not yet begun the transition to the status they will hold when the ritual is complete. During a ritual's liminal stage, participants "stand at the threshold"[citation needed] between their previous way of structuring their identity, time, or community, and a new way, which the ritual establishes. - Thomas Page

Law Enforcement , military { http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki... you’ll see cops defending all sorts of bad acts by other cops with lines like, “I’ll do whatever we have to do to make it home at night.” Letting statistics like those released yesterday go unchallenged with only the varnish applied by various professional police organizations exaggerates the real threat to police officers, and leads to the troubling trend toward militarization we’ve seen over the last 25 years. It also allows for police groups and advocates to dismiss aggressive behavior, excuse improper police shootings, and justify all of those taser videos we’ve seen over the last couple of years. We should do what we can to diminish the threat to police officers, but not at the expense of the rights and safety of everyone else. Striking the right balance requires a proper assessment of just what sorts of risks police officers actually face. http://www.theagitator.com/2007... http://fee.org/blog... - Thomas Page
