GrammarCheck - "Then there is a popular song that uses "lay" incorrectly. Bob Dylan's classic LAY, LADY, LAY should really be LIE, LADY, LIE, but I think we all can agree that the grammatically correct way sounds awful." - http://www.grammarcheck.com/archive...
I disagree. I think the usage is correct. She's laying an egg, and he's urging her on. How sweet! - Lo
Doesn't it mean 'lay' beside me? - Johnny
Nope, Johnny. A person has to "lie down". You "lay" an object on the bed but you "lie" on it. Unless you are now off the bed, where in the past tense "She lay on the bed for 2 hours, then smoothed the sheets where she "had lain." #yepIwenttothatkindofhighschool - m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
What about lay your hands upon me... More specifically, while you may lie down, asking another to lay beside you (as to place their body next to you) - Johnny
No, you can lay your hands on something but you gotta"lie" down (recline). And you say "lie beside me" if you wanna do it all proper. I swear. It's The Rules. - m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
rules are meant to be broken. - Friar Will
Never said you hadda follow the Rules. - m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
Now I'm thinkin of my favorite English Major joke where the homesick Bostonian says "I've just got to have scrod." - m9m, Crone of FriendFeed
But I'm telling you guys, she's laying an egg! It's the correct usage for that scenario :P - Lo
