From some quick research, it looks like the in-car record player started with the Chrysler DeSoto in 1956. From this CNET article (see: http://news.cnet.com/8301-17...), tone-arm skipping and an exclusive content arrangement with Columbia, the same folks who made the players, killed this tech before it even got started.
